Is America ready for a fat President?

Somebody with the physical stature of a Chris Christie, but with less seemingly corrupt baggage.

Point 1: He was elected Governor. Yeah, but Governor is not President.

Point 2: We had Taft as President, and he was quite the hefty guy. Yeah, but that was literally 100 years ago. Time and attitudes change. A man with a full beard would have a hard time being elected in today's political environment, and we have many of those in our past, also.

So, is America ready for a fat President?

ETA: Please note that the question is not about Christie specifically. He is just a ready example. It is a generic question in nature.

I would think someone with the political charisma of Chris Christie, though possibly with less baggage, would have as much chance as any skinny person of being elected president.

I dont think Christie will be nominated. I am not aware of another canditate that is that big that might be. Obesity does indicate some character flaw, even if only a lack of self control when it comes to diet.

I think it depends on his or her other characteristics. Fat couch potato idiot, who wants to spend his time smoking cigs and drinking diet soda? No, certainly not. Fat person who is otherwise intelligent, savvy, and has adequate character for the job? Hell yeah- I'd vote for him.

Teddy Roosevelt, McKinley and Cleveland also come to mind... sure why not? It's less to do with their physical appearance and more to do with how they govern.

I think a lot of people view it as a character flaw, a sign of a lack of self-discipline. I think a fat person would have to be more exceptional than an average-sized person to be elected.

whether Christie is a viable candidate now is probably the real question. however, to answer the one poised in the OP, i'd say that in his case, it might not be as relevant. he had bariatric surgery, so his weight will probably continue to drop. i think he's down about one hundred pounds already.

would Americans elect a morbidly obese candidate in general, though? i don't know. unfortunately, weight is looked at in a negative way as a sign of personal weakness, or as a failure. since every factor in a close race is important, it might pose a problem. ****, Romney, a successful businessman lost the race to a president in trouble mostly because he just came off as an out of touch plutocrat; the kind of suit that shows up at your factory to announce layoffs and pension reductions. running for president can be a really touchy business.

I would gladly take a physically obese President over a politically bloated one any day.

I could care less how fat the person running is.As long as his or her political views are close to mine and he or she has a proven track record to back up what they claim to believe then I am voting for the person.

How many TV appearances did Roosevelt, McKinley and Cleveland make? Seriously though, I agree with you it's how they govern more than their physical appearance. And whether you like it or not, the public has to like the person as well. That was one of Romney's problems... Christie has had some outbursts against teachers and their unions, some will see this as a positive, and others will see it as a big negative. I think Christie could win if he was nominated, however I seriously doubt that will happen... The Tea Party types didn't like Christie praising President Obama at all.

If he comes across as charismatic, he can easily overcome it. He already has. That has not been his problem, at least not recently.

Whe had a Fat President not too long ago.

Bill Clinton

Why not? We elected a black guy. Twice.

Well I'm surprised you haven't had one already, the Obese Party could easily get a majority of votes. You are going run out of thin candidates eventually.

Sure. It's still up in the air whether Hillary is going to run, or not though.

Yeah, really. More and more Americans can certainly identify with him :(

I see fat as glutonous and lacking self-discipline. I believe it, because I tell my children that. There are probably exceptions, like being on steroid medication, but generally speaking I stand by my answer. I know I'll get some flak for this.

The question would never be asked if Hillary weighed 250 lbs.

1.) anybody that makes a decision solely based on a presidents weight is a complete, mentally retarded moron
2.) we have already had overweight presidents

Would he or she have a fat spouse also?

I didn't say Hillary but, I could have meant Hillary.

Is this the same guy debating against racism in another thread? Fattist now? Shocking stuff.

Imagine the size of his peer group of voters, btw...

In the TV age it would probably be very hard for a fat guy to win. I read a book about the television age and presidents sometime back in the 70's, in the book it states that Lincoln couldn't be elected, he was too ugly and FDR couldn't either as he was in a wheel chair. Perhaps times have changed with handicaps of FDR nature, but someone as ugly as Lincoln with a beard still probably couldn't.

America has come to expect a certain image from its presidents, image is more important than substance. So probably not.

How about a fat, drunken crack user? Those guys get elected in some constituencies.
