All of the above is pure mumbo-jumbo.

How'd you feel about a similar post made by a muslim-extremist over what they think "authentic" happiness is based on the crap they've learned and been fed????

Parenthood shouldn't be about teaching that kind of morbid nonsense.
If your child finds that sort of thing comforting on their own when they get older then fine, but parenthood isn't about brainwashing.

Summary dismissals are not logically valid.

I would respond with rational arguments as to why they were wrong. If I lacked the knowledge to do so I would not respond to it and would allow someone with the requisite knowledge to refute it.

You're the only one talking about brainwashing.

This should have been a multiple choice poll, I would have chosen #1 and #2. Our job as parents are to raise our children to be productive, useful and self-sufficient members of society.

The answer is first and foremost about survival.... at least for anyone willing to observe nature. Procreation for the continuation of the species is a natural trait that is imprinted into the minds of all creatures. Everything after that is secondary.

That's crap when it comes to society and actually creating and continuing a nation or culture that is worth living in.

Because any and all organisms can reproduce...takes little or nothing at all. There is ZERO ability or skill or often even choice involved. ANYTHING can reproduce, pretty much. That is not a 'quality' to lift up as a criteria for a higher ground, it is innate.

So procreation is a given...anything can procreate. Everything after that....religion, culture, science, art, compassion, infrastructure, laws....is primary.

Since gender roles has been a big topic here lately. I am curious how DP feels about this topic.

I am aware that for the most honest answer, this would be a multiple answer poll, but I am more curious about top priorities.

Edit: Also the second option has a typo (before should be become) (if a mod sees that, would they be willing to fix it?)
Poll is a fail. You try to pigeon hole parenthood. Just damn!

Ironic, especially sense on that we are going in the wrong direction.

Without is there is no higher ground. Species do go extinct.

Not everyone procreates. Some can't, others won't. And still others are busy doing things that are not very productive.

Well the first is opinion, certainly....but if you cant grasp the big picture of the difference between existing (any organism) and contributing to the building blocks of a society....that's on you, not me.

Next: do you believe the species go extinct based on moral grounds? That other species besides humans have morals? Interesting. And wrong.

And third, I was speaking of species, humans specifically, yet you commented on individuals. Odd. Everyone does not have to procreate to contribute to society and all the things I listed however (religion, culture, science, art, laws, etc.). Again....that's kind of the point.

Somebody has to procreate or there wouldn't be any society.

Somebody has to procreate or there wouldn't be any society.

The original statement was qualifying procreation as something particularly special. It is not. Any organism does so.

That is completely separate from creating society. So IMO, since anything can procreate, there's no point in elevating it....it is the societal aspect that is the primary reason for human success at the top of the food chain (metaphorically speaking).

But you can't diminish the importance of procreation either. Procreation is necessary to survival. Art galleries and music are not necessary, they are optional. Those things which are necessary are superior, those which are not are inferior.

:) You are correct that an honest answer would require multiples. I would like to point out that, as a Christian, I have noticed in my own life that when I get being obedient to God right, all that other stuff gets added unto me, so to speak. I am happier, more successful, better adjusted, more moral, etc, when I am properly focused.

If you wish to consider yourself equal with one-celled organisms just to make a point, feel free. ANY living thing can procreate, it is nothing special an this planet. Something so ubiquitous and mostly not even by choice is not 'superior,' what you create from that is superior.

Again, obviously it is subjective and what actually counts is the final goal of your assumption. So one would ask how you justify anything by saying, 'procreation is superior,' when everything does it.

I rather like this: "Give them roots and give them wings."
Yes. Give them firm roots that they know they can always come back to in a time of crisis. But also the freedom to fly away and explore the world.

I was going to choose the first option but if the path they chose was to be a serial killer then I wouldn't want them to be successful in that path and I wouldn't support them in it so I'm going to go with a combo.

To raise the child to be happy, healthy, and successful in whatever path they choose and to help them become a moral citizen. So, #1 and #2

I think healthy rules out psychopathic or sociopathic disorders.

False analogy, the respective comparsion is made between same organisims. One cell organisms which can procreate but don't are inferior to one cell organisms which can and do. Same with humans.

It is not subjective it is objective. But the answer to your statement is obvious, not everyone does it.

The purpose of parenthood is an after the fact result of not thinking properly do to the stimulation and excitement of sex. Nobody wants to be a parent.

Do you need a dictionary for subjective? It was your opinion.

But if you want to keep it within organisms (lol) then it's still not superior in any way. THe lowliest POS can reproduce....it is not remotely based on skill and these days, not even on the ability to protect and provide (for a man) or nurture and raise (for a woman). It is based on people just hooking up...easy peasy. And if they get pregnant, then they often have kids. It's the path of least resistance. Even an abortion requires action.

To be superior, you actually contribute something to society...and that doesnt mean body count. It means actually sacrificing and raising good citizens. Both you and your offspring contribute to society. However non-parents can also contribute just as much to society. Reproduction is not remotely the main criteria to 'superiority.'

Quality, not quantity.

Are human beings not animals, and subject to the same basic instincts therein?

Nobody wants to be a parent. Some delude themselves into thinking they do and others delude themselves into accepting their fate.
