Why Are Members of Congress Using Your Money to Fly First-Class?

Last year, Bloomberg Businessweek ran a feature titled, The Pampered World of Congressional Air Travel. The story detailed the cushy and expensive travel bookings Congressman and Senators make on a regular basis with frequent trips back and forth to their home states and districts. The cost to taxpayers is enormous, but could be much less if they'd simply swallow their pride and sit in coach with the rest of us.

"There is no more pampered class of air traveler than members of Congress.

At Washington’s Reagan National Airport, they have their own special parking spaces—right up close to the terminal—that they don’t even have to pay for. As Bloomberg Television’s Hans Nichols reports, this perk costs the Metropolitan Washington Airport Authority $738,760 in foregone revenue.

To members of our fly-in-Tuesday-fly-home-Thursday Congress, these perks are a big deal. Most fly a lot, and many fly first class. They don’t just jet home to their districts. Sometimes, they’re jetting around the world at taxpayer expense ($23,646, to be specific), as Democratic Representative Sheila Jackson-Lee of Texas did in February. "

"As with all federal spending, Member's Representational Allowance funds are taxpayer dollars. As such, the use of these funds must be exercised with the utmost efficiency and transparency. A loophole currently exists that allows members of Congress to fly first-class at the expense of the taxpayer. Members of Congress are servants of the people and should not be considered a privileged class. Luxury airfare accommodations utilizing taxpayer monies would seem inappropriate in any fiscal climate but at a time of soaring deficits and with a federal debt in excess of $17 trillion such expenditures are especially wasteful," the request states. "If federal restrictions prohibit members of our military from traveling first-class, this same standard should also apply to Members of Congress."

"It's absolutely wasteful and completely unacceptable that Members of Congress - servants of the people - are currently allowed to fly first class using hard-earned taxpayer money.....snip~

There you have it.....the loophole our servants always use. That they shouldn't be considered a privileged class. Yet that's exactly what they have become and use, manipulate, connive, and get around. Its high time it stops. They are no better than you or I. Nor any others. Time for our privileged servants to go back to just being servants. Perhaps if we actually started treating them like servants. They would get the message. What say ye?

What?

I think they should pay any difference between first class prices and economy out of their own pockets. The only airfare paid should be back and forth to their home districts.

I prefer we allow them to take a bus, maybe. They can ride the bus in first class.

Recently we had a conference up here where alot of municipal workers, many of them on the Municipal dime were getting the best rooms we had at significant price increase and still had the nerve to complain about certain things that were free to begin with, I was really tempted to either call them out on it on the spot or contact their local newspaper.

It was downright disgraceful.

Any government employee who uses taxpayer money should get the most basic of the basic required to get through whatever it is. Now I also don't believe that necessarily means dangerous motel in Meth Town or a drunk pilot in a Cessna... wouldn't wish that on my worst enemy.

I don't know what ban he is talking about with the Military.....unless he means like Troops that are shipping out for some type of training and using commercial aircraft.

Still not the case either

Yep! I've known this for quite some time since back in the days when I was on active duty. It's always pissed me off that members of Congress can fly 1st-Class but military personnel could not even if we paid for it and showed our military ID. The only way we can get around it is not to show such identification, but should something go down on the plane and it's discovered that you are an active duty servicemember in 1st-class, watch out...NJP or court-martial could ensue.

Congressmen should fly 1st-Class only if they pay for it. Pay for the upgrade in seating assignment just like everybody else.

Mornin HB' :2wave: .....there are some reasons that could allow them to travel in First Class. Here are 3.

No Seats in Coach

federal-business-class-travel-regulations-2.1-800x800.jpg

A federal employee may move to business class or higher if no seats are available in coach. However, this is only allowed in the event that taking another flight would interfere with the business to be conducted, the matter is of an urgent nature, and/or re-scheduling for another date is not an option. This would include meeting with dignitaries or in the case of imminent public emergency.

Handicapped

federal-business-class-travel-regulations-3.1-800x800.jpg

A federal employee may fly business class if they are handicapped or impaired to a degree that makes flying in coach not possible. Required mobility aids, such as wheelchairs, and/or assistive devices could qualify the employee for higher class flight accommodations. The employee must provide written verification from an accredited physician and certification must be re-verified every two years.

Security

federal-business-class-travel-regulations-4.1-800x800.jpg

Couriers or security officers accompanying high security documents or packages may fly in business class if no coach seating is available or if the need for additional security measures are required. Security details provided for the protection of officials or heads of state may fly in the same flight class as the official.

And if they have to travel abroad in the performance of their duties, i.e., member on Foreign Relations Commission, take a military or some other air transportation arranged by the government, not commercial 1st-class on the tax payer's nickel.

Agree with the caveats listed above, but you've got to know these politicians are abusing this particular travel perk.

I don't see any reason why our congress-critters can't fly in the back of the plane with the people who sent them to Washington, D.C. , when we're paying the tab.

This is simple. The taxpayer pays for coach. The congressman wants to fly first class, they pay the difference out of their own pocket.

There are several things that our representatives in DC do that confuse and irritate me!

1. They write laws that apply to us, but then exempt themselves! Never have figured out why we're supposed to be happy with that arrangement.

2. They decide how much money they should receive in salaries, and when they want more, they vote to give it to themselves. Nice!

3. Most people work at jobs that have work hours predetermined. ie, 40-hour work week, with vacation time granted after a year. Congress is in recess many times during the year, for a week or more at a time. I haven't totaled up how much time they weren't on the job last year, but it was a darn site more than most workers get in this Country.

4. The example you cited above regarding preferred parking is a perk they decided they should have without having to pay for it. As a result, the airport lost over three-quarters of a million dollars in revenue. Guess who pays for that in increased cost of tickets, etc, for everyone else?

5. These people are being paid six-figure salaries by us to represent us, yet they don't listen to what we want, but do what they want to do, based on how much money they receive from lobbyists to do their bidding.

Elitists? You bet they are! Disgusting! Maybe that's what we get for electing attorneys to run our government, instead of people who have common sense! :2mad:

Mornin' OV :2wave: OH I think they are getting around the loophole quite well. Then theres campaigning in an Official capacity. Which like with security.....would include aides and certain underlings.

Which don't forget the Other privileged class.....which would be the Media. Plus all their assistants. Quite bit of waste. But I think if they had reporters and people hounding them. I think then we can give them the Attitude and Altitude Adjustments.

I know this is sarcasm, but I'm sad that MMC doesn;t

Actually I did.....I just wanted to see how long, You would then try and go personal and make it about me. Now you know how easy it is to watch you play into the hand that was dealt. Yet you still can't figure out why. :lamo

Mornin' SN. :2wave: I am willing to bet we can find there is a lot we can find that they are playing off. Like parking spaces and catching them cutting to the front of the line.

Not to mention.....servants don't, Lead the Way! ;)

I see no reason a member of Congress should not fly First Class, if he pays it out of personal income.

Greetings, MMC. :2wave:

Mornin Lady P. :2wave: Yeah I think attorneys and economists shouldn't be leading the way. Their tools to be used. When applicable.

Getting Elected and as soon as they start making the Camera's eye. Then they tend to forget they are servants.

I am willing to bet we could find tons of wasteful spending and living the high-life with our Congress Critters......with only those that have been around for 20 yrs. The ones like Feinstein and McCain, and Rangel.

What other public services do they take advantage of.....is what we all should know.
hat.gif

and then there are the private jets..

Sure, they should fly first class, as long as they're paying for it. Most of them can well afford to fly first class. If I had the money they do, I'd fly first class too.

I see no reason a member of Congress should not fly First Class, if he pays it out of personal income.

Mornin' Jog.

Yeah I wouldn't have a problem with it if that's what they are doing. But I think we know the majority aren't.

As I am sure there are a few that aren't even in the position or have the gamesmanship to know how and when to connive and get around what the common people have to go thru.

Wonder how they do with ATF.....huh?

It depends, if a member of congress has time restraints and no other option than to work during this travel time when he has to travel hours and hours (for example from Washington to Los Angeles) then yes, he can travel first class. But if he/she only has 1 or 2 hours to fly he/she can fly coach like the rest of America flies. He/she can wait to work after the trip has ended.

Well, Campaigning they should have to up their own Money.....although truthfully just to do so from the Office they have in their State, especially when it comes to endorsing. No need to waste taxpayer money to run out to California to say he supports someone in his party. Most into politics know and those who are not.....don't care if so and so says I am endorsing whoever.

If this was the case, we would either have a bunch of Red Roof Inns spring up in DC or a funding operation that would make the Alumni Club at Ohio State look like like miserly clerics.
