We both do what needs to be done. If dishes need to be washed or clothes need to be washed and I'm not busy, I wash them. I don't worry about whose job something is, I do what needs to be done and so does she.

When I was living with a woman; she did her thing, I did mine. No rules, guidelines or 'she does this/I do that'.

She cooked more then I did because she enjoyed it and I burned everything. She looked after her children (not mine - though I love them to this day) more then I did.

Otherwise, we just lived.

We both work, my wife exclusively from home and I halftime from home. I do most of the coking because I like it and am hood at it. She does most of the baking. The housework is shared probably 75/25, she does the 75. I do most of outside work and most of the repair work. Everyone, including the kids, are responsible for their bedrooms and their own laundry.

Just wondering how traditional are you in your marriage / parenting roles. How important is this to you? You can also indicate in your posts whether you are a stay at home parent or not, or if you both work.

(this goes along with the would you marry an American question in another poll)

I've always done the cooking. Tom is the orderer-outer/picker-upper of the family. I love to cook, and I like to eat what I want to eat. If I cook it? I pick it. I do laundry or Tom does his own. I wouldn't let him touch my laundry. Tom does everything outside except sprinkling (which I enjoy). If it's heavy, I don't lift it. If it's strenuous, I don't do it. Tom vacuums in between the cleaning lady.

Tom used to clean up after dinner until I relieved him of that responsibility. I like a clean kitchen. He likes "clean enough." Sometimes, when you want it done right? Ya' just has to do it yo-self. ;)

I'd say we're pretty traditional. Works for me.

My husband was a single parent, and I was a single parent, when we got together, so it was pleasant. I walked into a relationship with a man who had no qualms about cooking, cleaning or laundry. It was my first relationship like that.

We aren't very traditional. I usually cook. He usually does laundry. We both clean. We pick up, and spot clean during the week, and do "Saturday cleaning" on Saturday. That's when the heavier cleaning gets done. We both work together on yard work.

Only after you show me yours.

As long as you give me a few seconds to prepare.

We're not very traditional at all. We both work and make good money. I make significantly more than my wife at the moment, but once she passes her PE she'll catch back up. I'm as good or better a cook than she is so we split that and dishes pretty evenly. I do the mowing and trimming, she takes care of all the flower beds and stuff. Neither of us intends to quit working when the baby is born, but we're both hoping to be able to telecommute a couple days a week. All in all we split things pretty evenly and it works out fine for us.

My wife is from Thailand, she does the dishes, does the cooking and the laundry and cleans the house. I take care of the outside and fix whatever needs to be fixed. I suppose you could call this a traditional marriage, I have always been the one to work while she stayed home and took care of the kids, then the grandkids. Been married now for 45 years.

We're very traditional except for the fact that I took paternity leave (but my work output didn't drop - I just worked from home and survived without much sleep) but after than multi-month hump we settled into traditional roles.

Re: For those that are married or in long term relationships, how traditional are you

My wife and I have been married almost 14 years now. We have 3 kids and both of us work. I make the kids breakfast every morning, she usually puts together their lunches. I cook almost all our dinners, do the dishes, and clean the kitchen in the evenings. She does almost all the laundry. I like being outside, and do more of the yardwork. During the spring and summer she does more of the house cleaning on weekends while I am out in the yard. During the winter we split house cleaning more. As far as raising the kids we are both very involved in parenting them. We run the household cooperatively. I do the taxes ever year but she does almost all the bill paying. I don't have much use for tradition and am pretty laid back when it comes to things like that. I just like having my own time at times and she likes having hers at times. If I could not get out and go for a long trail run on the weekends (I run during the week over lunch) and or get out for a long ride on my road bike I would go nuts. She likes to have time to read, go to the gym and that kind of thing, so we try to make sure we help each other out a lot around the house and as parent so we both can do those things.

My wife and I generally don't eat the same things. I am paleo and she is a vegetarian. We cook our own meals. I cook on the bbq grill a lot. In fact I have 4 grills/smokers. I cook my breakfast on the barbie almost daily. I enjoy it.

We do dishes whenever there are enough to do. We do it equally. Often the other will dry, but not always. We rarely even use the dishwasher.

My wife does the laundry because she prefers to.

We have a yard guy, but we generally share in whatever yard work that needs doing otherwise. Now if it is cutting limbs out of trees or fixing the sprinkler/drip system, I do that. Picking up dog crap, we both do that.
