I think I am going to turn in the store. Welfare fraud is not small time when you consider how much of this goes on across the country. And If they shut the store down my brother may consider buying groceries with his SNAP card, but probably not.

Your brother is committing welfare fraud, he's stealing money from every person in this country. If you don't report him then you are as guilty as he is.

Completely upside down. The fraud starts at the top of a corrupt government that won't enforce the laws for its favored groups.

What will change if SgtRock turns in his family? NOTHING. Except SgtRock will no longer have a family.

What the Hell for? It sounds to me like your brother really needed a drink and the store did him a favor. Walk away from this whole thing and never mention it again. Be glad the voters bought your American brother a drink. Usually the corrupt Obama government channels taxpayer money to America hating immigrants and foreigners.

So, your answer is to do nothing because the Government won't do nothing. That's a good solution. I guess we won't be hearing from any conservatives in the future about welfare fraud.
To fix a problem requires a starting point. Sometimes it's painful.

Are you able to understand that the thread is about personal ramifications in a specific, minuscule case?

Yes I do, but how many personal, minuscule cases does it take to have a larger impact. Or do you now condone theft on a small scale.

The larger impact is already here and your corrupt president is doing nothing but enjoying making it worse. When does he start leading the way?

I am really sorry to hear about your sister.

I am not sure if I understand. Why wasn't he getting himself food with the food stamps and starving before you arrived? Was it because he didn't have a car and had no access to a grocery store, or were they spending all the stamps on beer for days??? That sounds ridiculous. Who would go that long without food if they had food stamps?

I am so confused.

Here is the situation. My brother and his sons live in another state. My sister passed away this month from lung cancer. I traveled there for the funeral and to visit. When I got there i found my brother and two of his sons had not eaten for two days. So i went out and picked up some burgers. After they had eaten I took my brother and his sons in my rental car, none of them have a car, to buy groceries which I gladly paid for. On the way back they asked me to stop at a store so i did. They came out with beer and cigaretts. Well needless to say i was pissed. I asked, how can you afford beer and cigaretts but can't afford food. My brother responded "the store accepted his food stamp card for beer and smokes, isn't that cool" I said hell no its not cool. My brother and his adult sons are on food stamps. So what am I to do. Turn in my brother and his sons.

No, you're sounding like a liberal. I'm as liberal as all get-out and I make a policy of keeping the law and the government, cops and bureaucrats as far from my life as I can arrange it. Conservatives would advocate turning in welfare frauds without second thought.

Conservatives also value family and if he values his then he won't turn them in over something minor.

Bullshat story...I don't believe it for one second.

Your confusion is understandable..
It doesn't make sense, because it is not true.

Well, I think when it's your family member, it is your business. :) Besides, welfare fraud effects everyone, so it actually is everyone's business.

As I posted before, just exactly WHAT would he say about the store?

"I heard this store accepts food stamps for cigarettes and liquor. In fact, my brother who's ON food stamps, told me he used them for just that purpose last week."

If that's a call he wants to make, then I can see that happening . . . IF, when they ask for particulars, he would tell them he wants to remain anonymous and stuck to it. That way, his conscience is clear and he isn't turning in his brother. Whom, if you think about it, he never actually SAW do anything. His brother could have been lying. I mean he wanted beer and cigs and had just told his brother they were broke so that his brother bought them food. What if he wasn't broke? He wouldn't want his brother to know he lied . . .

If one doesn't see it with their own lyin' eyes? I don't think one should report. Most especially their own family. There's something more to this story. He and his brother don't get along . . . he doesn't approve of his do-nothing lifestyle . . . something. And those things aren't well served by ratting him out. JMVHO.

Our poster is on notice now . . . the guy's either unethical or he lies like a rug. In either case, I think he just saved himself future money. Maybe he should send a thank-you note. ;)

You don't lie very well.
Pull the other one.

Oh, for heaven's sake. I can't imagine why you'd think he was lying. And, if he is, what the hell difference does it make? Jesus Louise.

I can't speak to that because it's never been an issue I've had. Like I said, I don't know what I would do in that situation. I'm just noting that it IS a crime to use your foodstamps on items that aren't approved and/or to sell or trade them for any such things, so it's not a "personal" matter technically.

Lol! Especially NOW that he's made it public to all of us here on DP!

Maybe its just me, but what happened to the fact that they are adults and (I am assuming this) they are not physically or mentally disabled, so why can't they work? or at least look for work? maybe offer to help them move to your city so they can find work? that is of course if your city is better off then the one they are in. If they refuse to work, then hells yea i would turn them in. They need something to stop them from continuing down this self destructive path and a stint in jail just might do it. At the end of the day (figuratively speaking) they might even thank you! and heck if they don't, then at least you helped them become more productive members of society, or at least gave them a chance to become one.

In my view the money for food stamps and other programs like that is almost sacred and should not be fooled around with. You should use it as long as you need it and then once back up on your own two feet cut the cord yourself because your a grown adult and should have the self discipline to do so. If your brother is not one then he needs to grow up and quick. I would give him an altimatum and offer help and support in any way you can while he is geting back on his feet. If he doesn't straighten up then yea i would report him.

How do you know its not true?
No store owner, especially one with a beer license would risk their business for a short sale on beer and cigs.
Most of all it would be impossible to ring up on an EBT card.
I know people who are using food EBT cards and there are ways to work around the safeguards... this isn't one of them.
You have been duped by an ingenuous poster who has presented an invented conundrum for his own amusement.
He is ****ing with you.

What is the true story of SgtRock's life?

Why would you even consider ratting out your own brother/nephews? It's a tiny amount of fraud, not armed robbery.

If you have to tattle tale about someone - rat out the store...not your own flesh and blood over some beer and cigarettes.
This. I'd rat out the store.

After you've cooled down, try and have a calm discussion with your brother. Tell him you didn't mind helping him out with the groceries, but it really bothers you that they would use their Food Stamps card for non-necessities. Tell him how you feel about it, without being judgmental.

Hopefully, maybe he'll see the light of day about how he's using that card.....

As to turning him in, well, if the program allows him to use his card for such products he's not actually committing fraud, just showing very poor judgment.
As for my brother, I cannot think of a bigger slap in the face than to do that in front of me right after I just bought him groceries. I'd be pissed at him, and I'd let him know it. It's no different than a beggar getting money from a person then driving by your house later that day in their Mercedes and flipping the bird.

I don't know why it matters so much to you. And you say "no owner would risk their business license", and I say bull**** to that. If a person can make an extra 50-100 dollars per day selling cigs and beer then they probably would.

Turn in the store, they shouldn't be taking food stamps. I don't think it would be unreasonable to report your brother too, but personally I would report the store first.

People are getting life in jail for shop lifting a candy bar. I expect the OP tends to support such laws, and the enforcement of them. He should not just let it go

Either do as Notquiteright (sp) suggests and confront the lazy bugger and his offspring, as to potentially shock them into becoming productive members of society. Which from the OPs description of them they are not. They had EBT cards, but no food for two days? What moron goes two days without food when they have a means to get food? I would not be surprised if they were on a meth bender.

The brother and his sons need a wake up call. Jail and a fraud conviction would do that, but make their future really probably even worse, a confrontation telling them to get their act together or they will a get a beat down, or go to jail just might be it. Other wise they will continue down the path of being welfare queens for the rest of their lives. The father setting a great example for his grown sons

It doesn't look like you mention whether or not they qualify for the program. Do they qualify? If they in fact are not working or have so little income that they legitimately quality I say if they chose beer and cigarettes over food, while not a wise choice, it is theirs to make.

It is illegal to purchase alcohol and tobacco with SNAP card.
