I was talking to an Air Force guy yesterday that said exactly that. He said even in Boot Camp they only have to "work" till 1630 then go home. Does anyone know if that is true?
Leave it to the Air Force, the only branch to reject prior service Soldiers and Marines because they're "too military".

This is disappointing from you calamity.
There would not even have been a Battle of Midway without our Aircraft Carriers, none of which were in Pearl at the time.
Midway was the pivot point in the War in the Pacific.
With Japan also in the Aleutions, we had a real problem, and many thousands of our soldiers paid the ultimate price.

To think that the USA Navy attacked at Pearl was not the pervue of the USA is hard to even fathom in one's head.
Like saying we shouldn't have expelled the Japanese from the Philipines, MacArther,
or dropped the two bombs, to prevent a half million more dead soldiers .
I'm not a fan of American Hegemony, aka empire. A base in the middle of the Pacific, which is now a state, is simply too costly and outside the purview of our founding. Of course, our paradigm is that America is the world's cop and therefore should be in the Philippians and battling Japanese on the Pacific Islands no one really cares about. But, I ask why?

Regardless men and women died there during the fight. It was a strategic naval facility that served to base our Pacific fleet assets that were in fact charged with, among other things, protecting the mainland from enemy naval forces. State or not it's value in the defense of our western coast is without question and was instrumental in our eventual offensive to defeat Japan.

Had the Japanese been able to secure Pearl Harbor and keep our Pacific fleet contained they would have absolutely used it as a base from which to launch naval and air attacks against the U.S. Possibly even a ground offensive, but that would not have had much chance of success.

Like I said--our men and women should not have been there. We have no business being in the middle of the Pacific, IMO. And, our involvement with the war against Japan back in 41 was stupid. It is what it is though, water under the bridge. But don't expect me to cry a river over those casualties or care about some memorial on Oahu.

Especially since Germany's U-boats were parked off our Eastern shores sinking our Merchant Marines.
We should have stayed in Isolationist mode and ignored the realities of the world, as some posters do to this very day .
The USA did not have to take sides in the war in Europe in the first place.

Just as we have no business stopping the madman in North Korea now?
Even China doesn't know what to do with them.
Have you seen the latest human rigthts paper on Dennis Rodman's favorite Dear Leader.
The UN could barely hold its lunch down .

If he sold us oil like the Saudi Monarch or lay down with our corporations to sew gym shoes like the murderous Indonesians, you would barely hear a peep of protest about Kim the Young One. Don't be naive.

Massacre investigation exposes Indonesian army atrocities - Survival International

So now the OP needs to bring in Jane Fonda and the Noth Vietnamese to make his point. What point was that again sawyer? My older Vietnam buddies still have pics of dead VC heads on their choppers. Do you approve of that for boosting morale also ?

I carried a pic holding two VC heads in my wallet for years. It made me feel better then but they are in an old cigar box now.

It makes it a "who cares" non-event.

Not to me it doesn't. The POW's (and other casualties) taken in the Revolutionary, and every battle since, have contributed to our right to say and do stupid things. Forum members are allowed that right. Military members are not.

It has been a while, but when I was military, we were told often and loudly that while we were wearing the uniform, we were expected to act in a manner not disrespectful to the military, the uniform, or the country. Apparently that is no longer emphasized.

With rape and suicides running rampant in our armed forces, methinks we have bigger concerns than someone slobbering their tongue on a poster.

In ships filled with war materials to kill Germans.

The reality of the matter is that it was contrary to US national security interests to enter WWII.

How many Americans were slaughtered because of FDR? How many were enslaved?

Democrats are evil.

What's wrong with it?

She is in uniform. A Marine would never pose for a picture like this while in uniform.

If she wasn't in uniform this is not a big deal at all. I don't see this is shocking or earth shattering. I'm really doubting this picture has gone viral but I suppose it depends on what classifies as "viral". I don't think a million people have seen this picture.

Exactly. Japan did not attack Hawaii. They attacked our miitary base in Hawaii. If that does not affect our freedom, very little would.

To think we were allied with Stalin, a murderous megalomaniac who makes Hitler look like a choirboy.

I guess this pic has gone viral. It makes me want to vomit and this so called lady needs to be dishonorably discharged IMO.

The options are kind of limited. Don't you think?

While I was in the Marine Corps the command even as low as the company level had the authority to administer Non-judicial punishment. A NJP never results in being kicked out. This is an inappropriate use of the military uniform. It's not a big deal but that doesn't mean it isn't a small or medium sized deal. This soldier does need to be reminded of her duties as a soldier to represent her nation proudly.

Rapes and suicides in the military are covered in several other threads. This is about disrespecting the uniform and what it represents.

Again, those casualties are what has given forum members the right to say stupid things.

Well I seem to be the minority here but IMO her conduct was dishonorable and a dishonorable discharge would be in order. An example needs to be made here.

That's ridiculous.

Note to self: Never promote sawyerloggingon to any position of authority in any organization. If you do the organization will only be left with one flawless person. Everybody else will be fired for any minor discrepancy.

I'm curious. What is an example of a minor offense worthy of a punishment lesser than expulsion? You are really being too harsh on this girl who is probably younger than 21.

Have you ever done anything stupid when you were young? What a silly question. Of course you haven't.

Did you have access to a facebook account back then? Did your fellow soldiers have a facebook account back then? The opportunities for young people to destroy their reputation and/or the reputation of their peers via the internet is a hundred fold to what it has been in all previous generations combined.

All young people have done stupid things since the beginning of time. Only this generation is cursed with the opportunity to expose their stupidity in front of millions of people. Regret usually comes days later. Facebook postings can be seen by millions by the time you realize that it was a dumb idea and facebook post have the potential to live forever. A picture in your wallet could be burned in a matter of seconds. A picture on facebook can never be destroyed.
