5 Ways Rich People's "Entitlements" Cheat You and Me

"By Paul Buchheit
February 10, 2014 "Information Clearing House - "Alternet" - The word 'entitlement' is ambiguous. For working people it means "earned benefits." For the rich, the concept of entitlement is compatible with the Merriam-Webster definition: "The feeling or belief that you deserve to be given something (such as special privileges)." Recent studies agree, concluding that higher social class is associated with increased entitlement and narcissism."

"1. Income: Mocking Our 'Progressive' Tax System
2. Wealth: Trillions in Financial Gains, Zero Tax
3. Financial Transactions: Trillions in Speculative Purchases, Zero Tax
4. Subsidies: Alms for the Rich

"Cheated

There's more. A regressive payroll tax, an almost nonexistent estate tax, the lower capital gains rate on carried interest for investment managers, trillions socked away in tax havens -- all involve tax avoidance by wealthy Americans who feel entitled to their privileged positions.

Entitlements for the rich mean cuts in safety net programs for children, women, retirees, and low-income families. They threaten Social Security. They redirect money from infrastructure repair, education, and job creation.

And the more the super-rich take from us, the greater their belief that they're entitled to the wealth we all helped to create."

This is a view of entitlements of the rich, not the average retired or disabled or poor.

Entitlement seems to be a paradigm that can't be rectified by optics.

In truth, the taxpayer provided infrastructure does enable the wealthy.

Poll questions because I have lost the access to post them

Why are these "entitlements" not a part of our National dialogue?

Options:

Political pressure from the wealthy.

Ignorance of the non-wealthy.

It's simply not true.

Other.

Rich people do not cheat anyone as a group, nor do most cheat any one individually. And some of your examples are really stupid, like the one about estate taxes. Rich people are more likely to pay an estate tax than any one else...

Also, please warn before linking to World News Daily. Some of us do not like giving the nuts there a page view. Getting "information" from there is a really bad plan by the way.

Just so you know, when you scan over a link, the address should show up briefly at the very bottom of your browser window, so you should never click a link you didn't review the address to. Just sayin'.

Yes, but I need a mod to fix it. When I clicked enter to move to the next line, it uploaded the poll and the only way back in was to go through "edit," and that didn't allow me much more than text changes. I don't know what happened.

Perhaps the greatest sin, is that the author of this laughable fiction is a college teacher at DePaul, who steals money from kids, most likely through student loans, so he can reward himself via his classes on economic injustice.

Thanks for the afternoon laugh Dave. :peace

Our tax code is a mess. I doubt too many people would argue that it isn't. It's been used as social engineering, fixing the economy, buying votes, and a host of other things for which it is a poor substitute for real change.

To say, "Entitlements for working people are earned benefits" is an oxymoron. The tax code is the tax code. Blame Congress. Entitlements are something else . . . for which you can also blame Congress.

Estate tax? Why should there even be a tax on my money when I die? Why?? I've paid tax on every dollar I have* . . . why should those net leftovers be subject to a confiscatory estate tax at all??

*Or certainly treated them the way the tax code says they must be treated.

Why would you require my assistance to censor your own self? I will flush your advice with yesterday's pizza. Thank you.

Regardless of your presentation or whether I agree with each bullet point in the Alternet article, which is the one that I chose to read, my vote on your poll would be.

Both 1 & 2 & Ignorance that many believe that opportunity is equal even if income is not.

We need to stop talking about income inequality and really focus on opportunity inequality. I think that's really more what everyone wants, even what's mainly being discussed when education and healthcare and equal rights and even a higher minimum wage for all are being considered. Those open up a better path to opportunity equality. By calling it income inequality, it makes it seem as though we want their paychecks to go to our bank accounts, but what we want it for is to even out the opportunity potential for our children and, if applicable, ourselves.

Thanks for the extra large font and bold type. It saves the people next door from having to call to see what I'm reading.

You should follow up on that. Must be a reward for his capture with him breaking all those laws and stealing from kids.

There really isn't much to follow up on Dave. Paul Buchheit, like many radical teachers who unfortunately populate our nations Colleges and Universities, prays on the gullible who think they are being given some important information. At $30,000+ per year to attend, how many years will his students be paying for the worthless bile he passes off as higher education?

Paul is nothing more than a piece in the chain that continues to harm the next generation. It's a shame, but hey, congrats to him for finding a way to hide his fleecing of students and their parents.

I wasn't aware that you've been voted the official voice and expert on the rich.

Interesting article by someone who feels entitled to read your gmail.

LOL!!!

Got to love this...entitlement means something different for the rich than it does for anyone else, and for the rich, we'll use the dictionary definition that makes them look bad. For anyone else, we'll make up a definition that makes them look good.

That right there just about makes this whole article a waste of time for the writer and for anyone who reads it...not to mention the OP for starting a thread about it.
