I'm getting a Triumph Bonneville, and as I've been reading safety statistics on motorcycles it made me wonder what the good people of DP would think.

You are 36 times more likely to be in a fatal crash on a motorcycle than in a car. The most common reason for motorcycle crashes is they get hit by a car that doesn't see them.

Do you think a 16 year old should be able to buy a motorcycle? Should protective gear (helmets, leather assless chaps, etc) be required? Do you think there should be noise limits on the pipes?

This is a thread all about motorcycles and the law, so post your thoughts.

They really do need noise limits on exhausts on bikes, sports bikes are not really an issue but Harleys are.

There would be riots.

Never ever in all of human history!

Generally I am opposed to all forms of prohibition.

If the argument for prohibition is safety, I am even less inclined to agree.

The argument for having loud pipes is that it helps save lives. Loud pipes make the bike more likely to be noticed by drivers in cars.... and the #1 cause of motorcycle deaths is people in cars who don't see the motorcycle and run in to him.

I would only forbid Dutch people to own motorcycles, since their moronic tourists invade our country on them each summer.

They make loud pipes to be raucous and get noticed. Otherwise, all bikes would be loud

Why would we make bikes illegal? They're fast, cheap, and get 60mpg, typically.

That's a win.

I don't think it helps, sports bikes sound quieter ans you still can't miss them. The sound is seemingly more to annoy people than anything.

Well the downside is in the North you can only ride them half the year and when it is sunny, you can't carry anything, you have to put on quite of gear on to ride, and you can buy a pretty good used car for the price of a motorcycle.

Motorcyclists usually just kill and maim themselves, so I'm cool with it.

5 grand will buy you a Kawasaki ninja...faster than a corvette, better mileage than a civic. Yeah, not a good grocery getter, but perfect for commuting to work.

Motorcycles are perfectly safe, it's the morons in cars that kill motorcyclist.

My biggest fear would be driving between lines of stopped cars on the freeway. All it takes is one person to open their door at the wrong time and bam.

I was just in Calif and I saw guys going through 5 lanes of traffic like a slalom course. Traffic was doing around 30mph while these fools had to be doing 60mph My brother is a fireman down there and says they scrape up what's left of those idiots all the time.

I always wondered if it was actually legal for motorcycles to do this? I always wondered about parking too.

Seems like a pretty good bonus to owning a motorcycle if you get to skip traffic and you never have to worry about finding a spot.

It actually is legal (in California) and dangerous as bloody ****.

What makes it even more hilariously dangerous is that car drivers stopped in traffic jams (aka "all of Los Angeles, all the time") resent motorcyclists for swerving through the traffic and will actively move their cars to stop them.

Are they potentially very dangerous? Yes. Should they be illegal? No.

The government should build roads just for motorcycles. Think about the weight demands (much lower), width (right of way needed), and they already tax bike owners enough (well in California they do). They should have their own roads in peak commute areas to make them more attractive, safer, and affordable.

That noise from a Harley can often be a lifesaver. Even if someone can't see you they can damned well hear you.

In the summer and when it is sunny, if you buy that motorcycle you have to own a car anyways so might as well spend that 5000$ to buy a better car.

There is difference between a noise to make your bike noticeable and a noise that is obnoxious which is what all Harleys are.
