13 is just as capable as 18 no freaking doubt. Society treats them like babies, they are not babies. And yes a 13 year old should be able to vote, drink, go to war, drive, all those things. guess what they can't cause the law says they are babies. Who made 18 the age? I mean seriously, i'm trying to understand why society think 18 is a magical age and history and nature ( reproductive around age 13) tells us otherwise. The only thing preventing 13 year olds from success is society, not the fact they are 13. 13 is really the age an adult should be IMO.

Is there anybody that honestly agrees/thinks that 13 should be the legal adult age and this means TOTAL ADULT
living on thier own all rights that a 18 year old has and more
drinking
gun ownership
choice to go to school or not
work
sex
draft into war or volunteer
drive
fla a plane
etc etc

So the question is:

Should 13 be the legal age of full adult and rights and do you consider them equal to 18yr old

yes of course no doubt
yes with some concern
no but maybe 16
no thats insane
other

and if you do i would LOVE to hear any facts or sound logic backing this claim up.

being 13 once, having a large family, raising a daughter passed that point and working with 13yr olds for 11 years I personally think this idea is mentally insane, irrational, delusional and has zero logic to support it.

many 13 yr olds would kill themselves and others if treated like adults

A 13 year old is a child, period.

So what group of morons is proposing this?

No. Our society is doing everything possible to prevent kids from "growing up too fast". The result of that misguided attitude is that mental adolescence has now been extended well into the 20s and, if anything, the legal adult age should be raised not lowered.

No, a 13-year-old is nowhere near as mature as an 18-year-old. They're still growing and their brains are still developing.

As soon as I find out what happened to this tree, I might think about it.

16 maybe. 13 never. Simple really.

That may be true, but doesn't counter the argument that 13 years old is adult material.

I totally agree.

I might agree with moving the age of majority to 30.

But 13 ? Not just no, but-Hell no. No frickin' way.

This is not going to happen in the USA.

Wait and see.

Who dreamed this bull**** up?

13 years old! There's really a big push to get them younger, eh?

Back when we use to only live into our 40s, young teens would marry and start families, now IIRC, the 'experts' say that adults are not mature until 25 or so.

We've had almost similar issue years back in Canada. Instead of decreasing the age, the government opted to increase it.

In June 2006, the Canadian government proposed a bill to raise the age of consent from 14 to 16, while creating a close-in-age exemption for sex between 14-15 year olds and partners up to 5 years older, and keeping an existing close-in-age clause for sex between 12-13 year olds and partners up to 2 years older. The initiative also maintains a temporary exception for already existing marriages of 14 and 15 year olds, but forbids new marriages like these in the future.[3]

LGBT rights activists[edit]

These activists also criticized the bill, because it does not address the issue of equality, maintaining the present Canadian age of consent for anal sex outside of marriage at 18. Hilary Cook, spokeswoman for gay rights group Egale Canada believes the bill is "an attempt to score partisan points".[14]

Lawsuit Against the Attorney General of Canada[edit]

In March 2009 a lawsuit was brought against the Attorney General as the Age of Sexual Consent increase was a direct violation of Canada's Charter of Rights and Freedoms within the Constitution".[15]

Canadian AIDS Society[edit]

The Canadian AIDS Society has stated that "increasing the age of consent could result in young people being more secretive about their sexual practices and not seeking out the information they need. This will place youth at an increased risk of contracting HIV and other sexually transmitted infections."[16]

Canadian Federation of Sexual Health[edit]

This proposal has received criticism from different organizations and individuals. Andrea Cohen of the pro-choice Canadian Federation of Sexual Health (formerly International Planned Parenthood Federation) said the organization believes the legislation does nothing to keep youth from harm. "What it will do is infringe upon the rights of youth in terms of their ability to make decisions on their own sexuality", affirmed Cohen on TV.[17] Later (in 2007) her organization issued an official position statement.[18]

Child Welfare League of Canada[edit]

Peter Dudding, Executive Director of the Child Welfare League of Canada, criticized the bill's effect of removing judicial discretion in cases involving 14 and 15 year-olds: "When we deal with arbitrary cut-offs, we lose the flexibility to apply the law in a much more specific and individualized kind of way."[19]

Yes, because that is EXACTLY what we need, more young teens having sex legally and irresponsibly. Wow!

Back in the old days, kids didn't have a choice but to grow up fast, but the idea that 12 and 13 year old children being married off is a myth. They were much closer to age 17. Most people who were that young and married off were royalty.

It depends on the society. In Western society at this time in history, a 13 year old is a child. In other societies, now and in the past, a 13 or 14 year old is/was considered an adult....more mature, more responsible and they act it. There is no way that a 13 year old could be considered an adult in Western society. It should not drop below 18 though, as I want 18 year olds held responsible for crimes they commit.

There is nothing adult about a 13-year-old. I don't care what time in history it was or what geographical location they live in. Not only do they lack any kind of experience, but their brains and bodies are not fully mature yet. And THAT is scientific evidence right there.

We made LOTS of mistakes in the past and treating children as adults is just one of them.

I
drinking
gun ownership

Drinking I think should be 18.
Gun ownership should be up to the family.
Choice of school should not be an option until high school is completed.
Work is good at any age under the right conditions.
Draft into war or volunteer should not be allowed until 21.
Driving should be based on things other than age.
Fly a plane; see driving.

I'd also add that the right to vote should be restricted to people older than 18. I'd go with 25 but certainly over 18 and definitely not 13.

Who on earth actually argued that? Who did you quote?
