Protest/novelty voting

Have you ever voted for a candidate you knew wasn't going to win out of protest against the stronger candidates or because you didn't care one way or another? Have you ever written in your own name?

I'm seriously thinking about writing in Mickey Mouse for Governor. The incumbent carters to the extreme right-wing such as blocking White House initiatives in the state that would have created jobs just to oppose the President and try to cause his presidency to fail, sending the federal funding to other states that tax-payers in my state paid into the federal treasury. He also tried a little voter suppression in 2012 and it failed. The other supports policies that violate my conscience.

In my state write-in candidates still need to be registered/certified as office seekers so writing in Mickey Mouse would be a wasted vote other than to make a statement. I wish disqualified write-ins were reported in the news but I think our elections office doesn't even report them as votes so the media has no information on those votes.

Finger Voting, baby.

Yes. Several times, I've gone third party, including the 2012 presidential election.
Me also, on that last...I was all set to vote for the R because I disliked the D, but when I hit the polls I realized I was disgusted at the thought of either of them, and voted for the Libertarian, whose name I cannot recall.

I have voted for Ross Perot and Barry Goldwater...
I'd like to see mandatory voting with a ton of reform..
One of which is this option ...
"none of the above" .

I think you get fined for not voting in Australia.

I'm not a fan of mandatory voting. I should have the right not to participate if I don't want to.

Usually you can find an independent/third party candidate who you could actually support. Not always but usually. If it's a candidate you can support then it's never a wasted vote.

And those of us who voted should have the right to slap you if you bitch about the outcome! :D

I think you're right. We have way too many people who vote who do not have the faintest idea of why they are voting for candidate A or candidate B.

I believe that I understand why some people may do this, but I see it as a waste of votes and time.

Voting for someone with zero chance of election will not change what the government is doing.

Voting for someone who is a little better (From your point of view.), may result in some change.

Basically what I am saying here is that it makes no sense to let the perfect be the enemy of the good.

Think about it. Me, I'll continue to vote for the least bad option on the ballot.

"Better days are coming."
~ But not for today's out of touch, running out of time, GOP.

I voted for the Rhinoceros Party candidate, twice, in federal elections here. His name on the ballot was Albert the Cad. Richard the Troll just died recently.
They were going to repeal the metric system because, "If God wanted the metric system there would have been ten apostles."
The top planks in the party platform...
Repealing the law of gravity[18][19]
Providing higher education by building taller schools[10]
Instituting English, French and illiteracy as Canada's three official languages[10]
Tearing down the Rocky Mountains so that Albertans could see the Pacific sunset[19]
Making Montreal the Venice of North America by damming the St. Lawrence River[20]
Abolishing the environment because it's too hard to keep clean and it takes up so much space[10]
Annexing the United States, which would take its place as the third territory in Canada's backyard (after the Yukon and the Northwest Territories—Nunavut did not yet exist), in order to eliminate foreign control of Canada's natural resources[21]

Rhinoceros Party of Canada (1963

These are all excellent ideas.

The USA needs to open up a branch of the Rhinoceros Party.

Only once, I wrote in Mickey Mouse rather than vote for any of the idiots running but ultimately, that's pointless. Someone is going to win and you don't have the option of living under the rules of people who don't win.
Pick the one you can best live with and hope for better candidates in the future.

I agree and see this as the best option.

Better to get some of what you want than nothing.

We don't have write ins here but I have voted for third party candidates when I was a Republican because both of the other candidates were atrocious. As well, my votes for both McCain and Romney were "protest" votes because after listening to Obama in his own words realized that while both of the Republican candidates absolutely sucked(I was a Republican then) and I didn't want to vote for them the alternative was worse. I actually felt dirty voting for both McCain and Romney.

I don't agree with this, but I do support the idea that those who don't vote give up their right to complain.
I say bitch slap 'em - they'll eventually learn to either vote or keep their mouth shut!

(Apparently you missed the " :D " at the end - or have no sense of humor. LOL!)

I miss the Rhino Party :(

Fortunately they cancelled the silly $$/vote scheme that was put in place before. Same party always wins where I am so I always voted for whoever was in 2nd place in the polls. Stupid law made it so that I was financially supporting parties I didnt necessarily agree with (Ok i disagree with each of them depending on the issue). Thats gone now so i can go back to my old ways :)

I only vote for people I want to win.If I do not want any of the candidates running for a particular office to win then I simply leave it unmarked.

Not in that style. The only sort of "protest" vote I did, was attempt to ensure that a candidate that ran further on the small-government ticket than the sitting congressman did not get the Republican nod. It was a long-shot for him, but I wanted to ensure it wouldn't happen. Then, once the general election came, I voted against the Republican (selecting the Democrat) I voted for in the primary.

I just call it strategic voting.

I've done that - and I wouldn't call it protest voting, either. Your label of "strategic voting" is good. :)
