So you'd just go along with it then. Okay.

I never said that. I was alluding to the fact that I can deal with the situation on my own.

Did the teacher have an obligation to report the inappropriate touching?

Then you'd lose your job as a teacher.

Maybe she turns into a bitch because she's tired of people assuming that, because she has a vagina, she is open to all forms of sexual harassment?

Women don't get sexually harassed because they're bitches. They're bitches because they think everything is sexual harassment.

Well, IMO, if someone asks you not to touch them, and you do it anyway, that is some type of harassment. Sexual? Maybe not. I don't really know the laws concerning what's considered "sexual" harassment as opposed to just a regular type of harassment.

[h=1]Teen Says Innocent Hug Led to Year-Long Suspension[/h]Teen Says Innocent Hug Led to Year-Long Suspension

I'm not sure but the penalty is inappropriate. Especially at that age where no life altering harm was done, correction needs to be just that, CORRECTION, not punishment. Community service at a battered women's shelter. Write a research paper on the adverse impact of the mistreatment from the perspective of women in his own family. A power-point presentation on how women around the world are abused. Something educational on human trafficking. Instead of turning this into a teaching opportunity and molded this young man into an advocate for women's rights, what the school system did instead was harm this kid's chances to go to college and become a productive member of society.

But the problem is some people have impulse control issues. I don't know much about this case, but the fact that she asked him to not do it and he continued with the same behavior indicates that he couldn't help himself IMO. He was certainly old enough to know better too.

IMHO, high school students have no reason/business hugging a teacher and teachers have no reason/business hugging students. If this was the first incidence, then a year seems excessive. If he had done it before and been admonished for it...then "you do the crime, you do the time"

Of course, I can't say that he's guilty or not, but if what the teacher says and if what was caught on video is true . . .

From the article:

A school surveillance video captured the incident. It shows Sam McNair, 17, embracing the teacher, who has not been identified, from behind. She then pushes him away and he releases her and turns away. The teacher claims that his lips touched her neck, which he denies. She also alleges that she had warned him in the past about inappropriate physical contact.

McNair has had other disciplinary problems, and I'd be interested in knowing what they were. He says they weren't about sexual harassment.

Did the teacher document the warning she says she gave? (Or at least tell colleagues?)

Here's a link to the school's PPM: Gwinnett County Public Schools Policies and Procedures

The year long suspension isn't for just a hug. The teen has been suspended before, apparently long term and repeated. Most schools have stronger punishment for each additional infraction, sort of like the three strikes rule in the adult world.

So at the very least he isn't a sweet affectionate boy...

I don't think the conclusion you reach follows logically from what (little) else we know of the kids behavior.

He could have been disciplined in the past for any number of things that don't preclude his being a "sweet, affectionate boy".

Maybe he had poor grades. He's a jock. "Dumb jocks" aren't unheard of.

Maybe he was disruptive in class in a sweet and affectionate way (hitting on girls (his own age) or chatting with his teammates when he should have been sitting quietly with his mouth shut).

I'm just spit balling but there are literally any number of infractions that could have resulted in him being disciplined that would lead one to question his sweetness toward or affection for other people.

Of course, the kid could also be a raging, violent, misogynistic asshole, or anywhere in between - we just don't know.

He's old enough, if he is of normal intelligence, to know not to come up from behind a woman and hug her.

I confess I posted a reply based on the headline and not the full story nor what others I see now have said. If this is a repeat offender and was asked to stop it, he had an obligation to quit it.

From the article:

I once had a student (one of my football players) embrace me from behind. without even thinking about it, I had flipped him over my shoulder and had him on the floor with my knee in his throat. scared the living **** out of the kid and I immediately apologized and helped him up. worked out good for me in the long run. word got around, better not mess with Coach B or he will **** you up. ;)

That's something I thought of. Alas, I am not one of them, but there are women too who will have you flipped and on the floor before you even know what happened if you come up from behind them like that. If I could do that, I would because I just jump out of my skin when people do this. I mean, I don't care who you are--don't you don't ever come up from behind me like that.

Agreed - this is a very opportunistic teachable moment; instead the school seeks to punish harshly. Yet, I can't help but keep coming back to the mixed messages schools provide. Taking this incident aside from any other issue, he's still being taught a lesson which is: All a woman has to do, justly or unjustly, is accuse of sexual harassment and your ass is grass.

You can see the teacher pushing him off her in the video.
And apparently it wasn't the first time. Yes, he disputes that, but he is not believable. In the video you see him come up from behind her and go straight for the neck like a predator attacking prey. If he thought she would voluntarily let him hug her he would not have done that.

That's why that video creeped me out.

He is one dangerous son of a bitch. He's a classic narcissistic sociopath of the sexual predator variety who shows no respect whatsoever for a woman's right to say no to his unwanted affections. If she doesn't want it, he's going to take it anyways. In the interview he shows no remorse for what he did and manipulatively tries to play the victim and rationalize his behavior.

And they want to put him on a college campus!!!? That's just a disaster waiting to happen IMO. If he hasn't raped already, he eventually will.

I do not know, but he should not have been hugging his teacher, especially not from behind.
