Not sure about a one way trip, but we could definitely get there and come back.

The biggest problem would be food and water, obviously. It would take some great tech advances, but hell, we went to the moon in under a decade. I believe we as a species have the grasp to do this within a reasonable amount of time. It's all about having the will to do this though, that's the big challenge.

I see hype and little follow-through. What we have is a 35 year old promising the sky (even a television show), beyond what the most successful private and state attempts at space exploration are willing to attempt, with no explanation as to how they would accomplish this scheme. On top of that, they may have to fundraise up to 1 trillion dollars, an investment that would ordinarily strike as beyond ridiculous.

We might have the tech but we don't have a planet that can be colonized. Mars is dead and has been for a billion years. It is too far from the sun, its atmosphere has been mostly lost into space. We would be better off planning a trip to the nearest Star with a suitable planet.
Smartest answer so far.

I agree, when I say we, I'm talking about the species as a whole, not this on company. I think the government should be the ones backing endeavors like this. We'd be able to work out a lot of the kinks by colonizing the moon first.

It will require terraforming and those who say "there is nothing there" are getting their opinions© from ? Sheer negativity I think.

This is for the bravest, boldest and most visionary. For most, a day without "Who Wants To Be A Millionaire" is a hardship condition.

I don't think I would do it, but human colonization on other worlds is a very important venture. I support this endeavor wholeheartedly and wish them all the luck in the world.
Why?

..

I'm sure there are a few people in this forum that wish I would sign up for this but really I just can't imagine. Apparently there is no shortage of applicants though. Beats the hell outa me why.

It's for the survival of humanity! Our eventual salvation lies in expanding beyond the Earth, and eventually beyond the solar system. Only then will we be able to truly ensure our civilisation lasts.

Why the hell would I like to go on a one way trip to Mars> Not know but hell no.

Please go. If not for our sake, then for your own. A planet with no liberals! What are you waiting for?

(this is friendly humor with just a tinge of truth)

All the scientific advancements that can be achieved only through projects like these; all of the new discoveries that we will make; all of the resources that we will unlock, etc, etc.

Personally if I was going to hump all the way to Mars I would keep on going to at least Jupiter orbit or Saturn orbit. A couple reasons for that move. 1) Mars be dead and don't have a radiation belt so it gets hit hard with radiation a lot of the high-speed interstellar stuff is going to bombard you. Not kosher at all. Think iron particles and the like and you begin to understand what the Van Allen belt does for us. You would have to live under ground at a 3rd G which is another reason to head all the way to the Jupiter. Build habitats that provide a full G. It would be less hassle. 2) Jupiter provides a few things Mars does not, energy and protection from interstellar radiation amongst them. Jupiter has an abundance of energy to harvest via the very magnetic belt that protects from hard radiation. And a large magnetic belt to help shield from the really nasty radiation that is hard to protect against. There are plenty of resources in local orbit to be able to harvest relatively easily all sorts of useful stuff like reaction mass, water, methane ect..

Mars may be closer, and have a certain allure but practically speaking if we are going to take our first steps as truly self sustaining space culture then the gas giants are a much better destination for long term efficient sustainability.

Believe me if I ever get a realistic way to get off this rock, I would in an instant, no thought required.

The best way to do this is to use the moon as a raw materials supply base and practice building space habitats and manufacturing facilities. Settling on the moon would not be the best idea expect as a work camp environment. You practice building and settling the orbital habitats. You get those working well then you have the tech needed to expand outward.

There is nothing there.
That is an honest and accurate statement.
The only thing that can be said for mars is that it is not here. You would need to bring everything with you to live, food, water, air, fuel, shielding from radiation, cosmic dust and micro meteorites.
"Terraforming " is an entertaining sci-fi pipe dream... virtually impossible.

..and you know this how? When you went to Mars there were no cat cafes?

Sci-Fi pipe dreams. Like phones that don't need wires. Like aluminum planes with 500 passengers? Like computers that weigh 7 ounces?

Sure. Nothing is possible.

I don't question your honesty but your claim of accuracy is a little weak IMHO.

I suppose the only people that would go are the same types that would have left to colonies in the 1400-1600s. People with nothing to lose. Adventurers. And people who might gain fame and fortune.

I wouldn't go. I have a girlfriend I want to marry some day, a loving family, and a few friends that mean the world to me. (Pun intended).

Think of living the rest of your life in a mobile home in the middle of the most horrible desolate and hot region on earth that you never, ever can leave. It's worse on Mars.

Any time they have tried to have humans in a small group live in a small space (cave, arboretum), they all quit within weeks.

You don't really understand distances in space, do you?

Yes. I have seen the future of this planet, and I want no part in it.

The moon would make a much more suitable location for a permanent colony than Mars would. It is "easy" to supply from Earth and there is water there to use. Not to mention the ideal distance from the Sun. Why this fascination with Mars for a colony? It has no air and is cold as hell. The Sun is nothing but a bright Star on Mars. Maybe mining? Even if it was full of gold, I doubt it would be worth the expense of shipping it back to Earth. Mars is REALLY far away.

I don't think you have much choice in that one ;)

I can leave this planet at any time. I would just prefer to watch my grandchildren grow up before I go to Hel.

Mars is a good middle-ground.

You don't really understand distances in space, do you?

Sure, I do.

The vast, ludicrously large distances to the nearest star systems remain insurmountable to us, for now, though talk of generation arks or terraforming probes are already in their infancy.

But it's not ludicrous at all to think about exploration and colonisation of our solar system!

I wouldn't want to be the first to go. But I'd highly encourage and support those who do. However I doubt Mars One will get off the ground, as yet they have secured no major sponsors which is the lynchpin of their plan. Dennis Tito's Mars slingshot mission has a better chance and its still low odds.

Too many people don't understand the distances involved in space travel, nor the exceptionally harsh reality it is either. In addition to distance, there are matters like radiation. The long term physical effects on the human body for radically altering gravity. Even the psychological effects of isolation in a trapped setting even with a group of people.

Living on Mars would be horrific. Like living in the Sahara desert in a few connected small boxes for which there was no air outside, the temperature a couple hundreds of degrees below zero, while being blasted by radiation.

It is a desert planet with a thin atmosphere made mostly of carbon-dioxide. While the high concentration of carbon-dioxide might lead you to expect a green house effect on Mars, the atmosphere is much too thin (about 1% of Earth's) to keep heat from the planet from escaping out into space. Because of this the atmospheric temperature can vary from -220 deg F at night to a high of 70 deg F during the daytime. With such a broad temperature range vegetation on the surface is non-existent.

At it's closest, Mars is 35 million miles away. Travel time would be about 6 months. So think of being in your walk-in closet for 6 months. And after finally getting there, you get to live is a slightly larger box. But OH THE ADVENTURE OF IT! LOL!

Everything good on Mars is below the surface. We keep the atmosphere thin to discourage you from using us as some kind of hokey rich guys dream vacation. We've taken far better care of our planet than you have. Sure, the reddish glow gets on our nerves too but we work with what we have.

You are an arrogant species and one day you will come to regret your societal behavior. We all get along, why can't you?
