Hey all,

As we all know, unfortunately, peace can't last forever -- it's just a fact of human existence. So, my poll today: Where will the next major war be, and who will be involved?

There are plenty of trouble spots around, and as we all know from history, little actions can have big consequences. To my mind, there are a few probable places:

The Middle-East: Everyone's perennial favourite, the Syria-Iran-Israel-Palestine-Egypt-Lebanon cluster**** has been tense with the Syrian Civil War, not to other provocations on all sides, like the Egyptian coup d'etat, Israeli illegal settlements, Palestinian rockets, Iranian nuclear capabilities, etc.

South-Central Asia: Bill Clinton once said that the scariest thing he ever found out during his time in office was exactly how close India and Pakistan are to thermonuclear war. Throw in some drones, a large terrorist network, and nearby unstable Afghanistan, and this one could be a winner.

North-Central Africa: With NATO's toppling of Libya, and France's recent invasions of Mali and the Central African Republic in a single year, combined with appalling socio-economic conditions and plenty of Christian and Islamic terrorist militias, this region could become a battleground sucking in nearby Somalia to boot.

Korean Peninsula: The Korean War ain't over in the eyes of the North, no matter what geopolitics says. With one of the world's largest build-ups of artillery only 30 km from Seoul, North and South Korea are as tense as ever. With US military drawdowns worldwide, let's hope the North doesn't decide now's the time to strike.

South China Sea: An absolutely ascendant China may wish to finally get rid of the thorn in its side that is Taiwan -- the only thing standing in its way is the US 7th Fleet. Let's hope it stays there, or we could have another Chinese civil war on our hands.

Latin America: With the cartels running rampant and the Mexican government fluctuating in capabilities, causing more foreign and local deaths only miles from the American border, this hotspot could erupt if the right (wrong?) foreigners are caught up in it.

Or, from out of the blue, Spain could invade Gibraltar, causing Britain to declare war on Madrid and seize it, starting the third installment of the British Empire -- Portugal, look out, you're next!

What do you guys think? How will it start, who will be involved, and how will it end?

Multiple theaters, and it will be ideological. The great war of religions.

Interesting. But good luck getting Russia, Mexico and America to all fight on the same side.

The same could be said for Iran and Saudi Arabia, mind you -- the differences between Sunni and Shia Islam are enormous, especially to the followers of those religions.

Anyway, trends indicate people in the West care less and less about Christianity -- with any luck, in a few decades, it'll be mostly irrelevant even in America. Why do you think there will be such a reversal, and then such a war?

Counting simply the number killed, I would guess Africa but based on the number of global players and economic impact I will guess the Middle East. What makes a war "major"?

Well, it seems to me those who think Christianity is irrelevant will be forced to confront the 100's of millions who think it is.

That's a good question. I suppose it would be a function of casualties, forces mobilised, resources spent, and geopolitical outcomes.

But I don't really know!

I don't think we will ever have a war of religions, at least not in the sense of Christians versus Islamists. What would be more likely is a war of radical Islamists versus everyone else.

Why so? I think, actually, in a couple decades the US will be much like the EU in this regard. In Europe, it's a personal matter -- your belief, your life, your moral code, etc. It's not for the state or the society to decide for you, and it's also not for you to decide for the state or the society. Surely this sort of religious freedom is what you in America seek as well?

Anyway, it's not to say that religion is irrelevant entirely -- just to say that it ought not have a place in geopolitics. I feel similarly about Islam -- the Islamic theocracies in the Middle East are revolting, both in their external worldview and their internal oppression.

So, that's what I mean -- I don't think that the millions of Christians in the US or Europe seek to force Christianity upon their societies, or other societies, so I see no reason there would be a confrontation. Is that not so?

Radical extremists vs. radical extremists. Hopefully none of the world's great religions will allow religious extremists of any faith to gain power over entire governments - and I include Christian extremists in that.

I think you have more accurately stated the possibility. The "war", in my opinion, has already started. How large it gets remains to be seen.

It's my sense, and my experience, that Christianity is not as blatantly expressed in the US as many like to advertise. On the other hand, given the accomodations Islamists are demanding, the forcing upon society issue falls more to their side.

Given these demands, and actions around the globe, as another poster suggested, the radical Islamists may very well provoke such confrontations.

No major wars any time soon.

As a distant possibility, India may come to blows with Pakistan or China. Even more distant - Russia vs. China, over an attempt by the latter to reclaim the territory in eastern Siberia it lost in 1850-60s.

In Alabama in about a month when Auburn university - despite thoroughly beating Florida State in the BCS title game - somehow finishes second in the final BCS standings to Alabama.

Ah, yes, this I largely agree with -- though I think it might be more accurate to use the term 'Western' society; I'm not sure how much it has to do with Christianity itself. I do agree with you that certain Islamic theocracies with a hell of a lot of oil money are quite anti-Western in their geopolitics, and have been funding networks like Al-Qaeda for a long time.

That is indeed a coming and current conflict of our time.

As the battle over energy erupts, I suspect ideology will form the foundation of each opposing force.

Problem is, the situation is destabilizing with the relative increase in wealth in different areas. That is systemic and not regional. That means a break-down in stability could happen any ware and will, unless we can restructure the architecture of global security.

There won't be any more major wars, just minor ones. Eastasia will never have a major war with Oceania, just small skirmishes to keep the economy going through the sale of arms and keeping some of the youth out of the job market. War is peace.

I voted for "South-Central Asia: India, Pakistan, Afghanistan".

I expect that it will also involve China and Iran and will potentially spill over onto the Pacific Rim and into Southeast Asia.

I voted "other". After considerable pondering, about 30 seconds, I decisively concluded that my musings will have absolutely no bearing on the situation; the next war is the war playing out somewhere, today. I will not see the end of war in my lifetime so in "The days of our lives", "as the world turns", "Grey's Anatomy" gets acid indigestion while "This old world keeps on turning".

It has been personally amusing to compose a rather wordy and minimally humorous way of saying I don't care "a Tinker's damn" about another never ending daily confrontation. Let allah sort it out. :lamo

Have a HAPPY day all

Never say never, and conflicts will come from where you least expect. The US in a pulling back mode will have a profound effect everywhere. Something will try to fill the vacuum.

Yeah - that was the theory after WWI, too. I hope you're right, but.....

What that guy said.

I have to agree.

I see little chance of world-wide peace breaking out anytime soon.

And a lot of chances of little wars here and there.

Let's hope that the USA can stay out of those wars.
