I never support a shutdown ever. It just makes y'all look quaint.

In other news, we just abolished our debt ceiling by symbolically abolishing the death penalty. An unholy marriage between the conservatives (government) and the socialists (minor opposition party) paved the way. Pigs can Fly!!!

i don't support shutdowns. if extended unemployment is the only sticking point, it has to be compromised. however, this is a theoretical. in reality, it won't ever just come down to that one issue. the issue is that a vocal minority hates the president so much that they must fight or take apart everything he has done or wants to do, even if the nation suffers because of it. due to the split in the house, these few representatives wield enormous power.

it won't be unemployment, though they'll surely be against that, too. the sticking point will be more Obamacare, Obamacare, Obamacare. rinse and repeat.

I support shutdowns, but only because sequestration kicks in and drops the Military Offense budget by 10%. It is the only thing I have ever seen that is effective at curtailing our National Policy of Permanent War/Institutional Insanity.

The federal government "shutdown" typically involves a paid vacation (sometimes with added unemployment benefits) for "non-essential" federal workers and unpaid forced leave for some gov't contract personnel. As we saw with the white house tours, a cut means that priorities can still be supported even with less in the total budget. The insane assertion that only by maintaining "full funding" can the gov't operate effectively, has thus been proven false.

Another point is that budget cuts are really just lower increases than our congress critter's are comfortable making. The federal labor (GS) system contains built in "automatic" pay increases (grade/step), what most in the private sector call raises, but the federal gov't pretends are mandatory. In other words, while the taxpayer gets no increase in pay, they are expected to accept giving each federal worker regular, periodic "time in grade" or "step" increases simply because they exist and did not get fired.

Reaching a federal budget agreement is a basic annual requirement (now turned into a circus) and often replaced by simply rubber stamping a 5 year old "budget" with a few across the board increases and calling it a "continuing resolution". This saves the congress critter's from actually having to make choices or appearing to support any moronic individual item in the "budget".

I support a permanent federal shutdown until funding each department, program and agency (over $10M) is given an independent up/down vote using a roll call procedure, placing on the public record the yay/nay of each congress critter. This is the only way that the voting public can determine who actually supports what federal spending. Only by shining a light on exactly who voted for the Cowboy Poetry Festival, a military "super toy" not even requested by the Pentagon or the study of shrimp on a treadmill can we ever hope to get federal spending under control.

I like your permanent shutdown option as a means to cut all the non-essential fat from the government. It's grown far too large and hungry for the value that it actually delivers to the electorate.

and that's the first part that will get patch bills to restore full funding. science / social programs / employment will be the areas that suffer. cutting long term military spending via sequestration is a pipe dream.

The take-everything or we'll destroy the government and economy crap needs to end - and I blame Democrats for that.

Everything BOTH parties agree on should be passed, and only points of contention hung up.

I thought the republicans shut the gov down last time?

I support a shut down no matter what the reason is. The best thing for the citizens of the US is to have our federal government not working. All they have done for a long time is ignore the consistution and the people, and create more bad laws and regulations that screw things up.
