The ID is free and easily and readily obtainable.
It can be obtain where all other IDs can DMV, Passport, court house for weapons permits etc and at the polling places at certain times.

Also the VOTING ID isnt required to vote other picture IDs are also acceptable, Drivers license, Passport, military ID etc.

as always if theres a problem with ID you still get to vote special ballot and will have a time frame to work it out.

I would definitely support it under these conditions.

I'm tired of government issued ID.

This is Georgia's voter ID law. Its free, easy to get, etc.

As long as it was instituted well before an election so that people have time to educate themselves on the matter (IE: don't pass this crap 4 weeks before the election) then I'd be perfectly fine with it.

yes i agree 100% that is a VERY important move and its also why i said that it should be available at the polling place, for same day registration if needed

not familiar with it but im curious is that all that was in the bill or were things piggy packed on it like no Sunday voting, changes to absentee ballots, no same day registration, no district or voting poll lines, only voting ID accepted and or any supplied ID much be identical to voter registration log etc

Having the polling station issue yo ID so you can vote at the polling station is a little far-fetched. I'd be okay with using alternate forms of ID like expired ID's if, in exchange, same day registrations were ended.

why? drivers licences and renew carry permits are issued on the spot so i dont see it being far fetched at all

but i do agree it doesn't HAVE to be done if other IDs are acceptable

I voted no simply because you did not describe ANY supporting documentation required to obtain it. Can one get 20 of them using whatever they make up as a name/address?

As long as those IDs require that you actually show up in person, and present a birth certificate/certificate of naturalization/certificate of none availability of a birth certificate( in rare cases a individual has no birth certificate and it has been investigated that the individual was born in the US to get this certificate) and S.S. card to get those photo IDs then sure.

For the longest time all one had to do was walk into the polling place, fill out your sheet of paper and go vote. But around ten years ago my neighbor went to vote one afternoon only to find out someone had already voted for her in the morning. The country had around 20 of these that they knew about. She rarely voted, so who ever did vote in her name probably took that into consideration. This was in the late 90's and that was when Georgia first started considering the photo ID law. When it was finally passed the law didn't take effect until two years later giving people plenty of time to get a photo ID if they didn't have one.

Voter identification was tighten up around 2000 to make one show an ID or two utility bills with name and address on. This was done by our Democratic Governor and state legislature then, so this move to a photo ID law wasn't much of a partisan thing. I think it was in 2004 or there abouts the current law was passed after we elected our first Republican Governor ever in 2002 and the Republicans for the first time in our history took over the state legislature. The law has worked out fine.

i wouldnt even mind if one didnt show up in person but yes mathcing info would have to be supplied, DL ID#, SS#, fax or scan of BC etc.

but mind you this is going off of what im used to.

IN pa for decades ive have always been asked for ID to vote, im not sure what happens when you dont have it but im always asked. Then they look at it, scroll down the registered voters list , verify and mark me as voted.

Now if something different happens else where maybe i would change my mind on this.

but my point is there could be somebody that fakes my ID and votes for me but the flag is going to be raised if i already voted, or am not registered or i vote later.

some one could fake being me but they would have to know i dont vote and get some of my info and fake an ID.

SO under those condition im ok with obtaining a ID online providing some info

The problem with accepting multiple (non mutually exclusive) IDs is that without verification one can hold several of them, possibly in different districts/states, and vote multiple times "legally", thus defeating the purpose entirely.

Seems we were a bit behind PA down here. But based on each individuals experiences that is where opinions are drawn. Nothing wrong with that. Georgia is one southern state where its ID law was never challenged. That in itself makes it unique.

Only citizens should vote. Prove it. A state picture id is easy to get and cheap. Get one. Prove who you are to vote.

Voter ID laws being racist imply that minorities aren't smart enough to get an ID. That is racist in itself. Minorities are just as capable as anyone to get identification. We need identification to buy cigarettes, beer and to drive. Certainly voting is as important as cigarettes and beer, well, cigarettes.

For a long time in my state they just asked for your name and party affiliation, they pulled out a computer print out with names look for your name and have you sign next to it. No ID or even a voter registration card was asked for. So if someone knew what elections certian voters voted in and didn't vote in then someone could litterally walk in claim to be that person, forge their signature and no one would be the wiser. Eventually we enacted voter id laws. In my state to get a voter registration card is still a joke. You just fill out a form, mail it in and then a week or two later you have a voter ID. Many employers use this as ID.

The thing is many people do not vote in every election. Generally in presidential elections most registered voters in a city will vote, but if its just a state election then there is less registered voters from that same city voting and if its just a mayoral election then even less registered voters from that same city will vote. Its like a funnel.I think on top of a photo ID and voter registration card the election board should send you a letter informing you that you have voted this way voters will know if someone someone voted for them or not.

In NJ you're required to mail in a paper Voter Registration form.

On that form you provide your DL# or last four of SS# along with a mailing address.

I imagine they do some sort of checking to ensure that everything is on the up and up, I guess that the DL# or SS# you provide matches your name, but I don't know how much more they could do.

You're also required to sign the form.

When you show up on election day at your polling place the poll workers have a book of registered voters and each entry includes the signature you used on your Voter Registration form.

You sign the book to indicate thhat you're there to vote.

They also have a separate book of, I guess they're like "voting tickets" or something.

It's a perforated card two-part card. You sign one half of the card and the poll worker tears it in half and checks your signature against the signature in the book, or at least they could if they wanted to, I've never really paid attention to make sure that they do. I should add, I have a pretty simple but distinct signature (essentially my cursive initials) and it wouldn't take a great deal of scrutiny to compare them.

Anyhow, the poll worker at the table keeps the half of the card that you sign and hands you the other half.

You walk over to a voting booth and hand the attendant there the other half of the card. That attendant drops that half in a bin, resets the booth, and allows you to enter.

You're not asked for ID at any point in the process.

it was never law back then but ID was just asked for and i never thought anything of it

As long as the the ID was government issues, I'm cool with this. Mainly I think it's important to have a system that once a vote is cast, can't be recast some where else. The reason for the Voter ID would be you swipe it, get your vote, and your done. If that system could be used with other ID (say govenment ones) then it's cool with me.

not in my state they are not. State ID's are mailed to the address of record about two weeks after your visit to the DMV.
