Do you check your luggage when flying? Should there be a requirement to?

Should flyers be required to check all luggage?

I fly somewhere 2-3 times every month and lately I have noticed that flights are getting later and later because of all the luggage that comes on board and then has to carried back to the front to be checked into the belly of the plane. When we had the ban for carry on luggage, I never saw a late flight, I wish all luggage had to checked. What say you?

With all of the new checked bag fees, I am sure that the airlines would agree with you. ;)

Not as long as airlines are charging checked bag fees.

Personally I haven't seen that causing an issue. I've never had a flight leave late because the last few people on the plane had to check their bags.

I really haven't seen a problem, and I travel every couple of months. Are you saying people should be forced to pay to have their luggage stowed?

I never check my luggage. I've got a bag that is exactly the correct dimensions for the overheard and if it doesn't fit in there I don't take it with me. The one time I did check my luggage it didn't arrive until I was already home again.

I agree. It is really a pain. I travel to Los Angeles from Phila and they are pretty good with unloading the luggage at both airports. It's not as long as boarding and waiting for the over capacity luggage to be removed from the plane before takeoff. Truly annoying.

Nope. They don't want your underwear in their hold which is why they charge the fee to keep you from using it. They want that space to haul around mail, produce, dead bodies, etc that are much more profitable for them.

I have never had a piece not arrive or get lost

I never pay, of course I fly Southwest

fat people? I have seen some pretty large people on flights?

They are the ones that have been in the news for trying to make fat people (like michael moore) pay for two seats IIRC

yeah everyone is 5'8" and skinny these days. I am 6'4" and find myself uncomfortable on a place when it is full.

If truth in advertising were enforced, Southwest would have to call it Telephone Booth Class. I don't fly them unless there is no alternative.

I try to avoid all carriers if the destination is 7 hours or under I just drive. If not I rate the carriers in this order:

Southwest
American
Frontier
Delta
United
US Air
Continental

When I fly to my Florida snow bird home I do not check luggage. I just carry a small carry on bag for my meds etc.

No, but not to save time. So I don't lose it. Generally I'm carrying valuable items and items commonly stolen.

It ticks me off the so many people ignore the carry-on limit - meaning overhead space runs out. One time I got on late and they announced the rest of carry-ons would have to go in luggage because the off-head compartments were full. I had a large sum of cash I was traveling to buy a car with, plus laptops, in my carry one in a soft unlocked carry-on bag. $30K in cash in a soft carry-on bag put into luggage at the last minute? I scrambled to get it under my jacket, the laptops at my feet, and gave them the mostly empty bag. If I had instead refused and wanted off the plane I felt that could invite the TSA and we all know how much the government likes to just seize people's cash.

I travel light. I take my one and only bag onto the plane with me. I can't afford the fees they charge for bags. They're absurdly high.

I try not to, especially on connection flights. But, I retired from the airlines, and I can fly for free with free bags, that being said, if my bag is lost, I am usually SOL. Now, if I go somewhere to scuba dive, I check my bag, mask fins snorkel, octopus, computer and BCD take up a lot of room! But, statistically, it is very safe to check bags, annoying to wait for them though..

there are no fees on Southwest;)

No, but you pay more, on average for your ticket. Southwest will be forced to change their model, they are now one of the highest labor cost airlines in the nation, because the other majors went ch 11 and renegotiated rates with unions. Add in CO/UA and DL/NW and upcoming America West/American (I don't utter the "U" word), ultra low cost competitors like Allegiant and Spirit and Love Field being open to everyone, and SW will continue to have struggles.

I prefer United or USAir, though I have binders full of friends who fly for American and Continental.

they are not struggling, flights are full, and their rates are not higher by the time you figure fees on the others. Allegiant nor Spirit are competitors in my market
