Internet, which was invented by military funded with tax dollars now costs me about $70/month (it was $5/month when they first hijacked it from the people)
TV also used to be free I think costs around $30-$200/month (I can live without that, but I know people invented and no longer have it for free)
etc.
So what's the fair price for clean air?

Do you live in China?

Then your air is clean, stop the BS.
My internet is also free, but for some reason I have to pay for "service" which could have been provided by dudes killing people in the middle east.

ill admit that fresh air is important, and there should be increased regulations on how to keep it clean and pollution, but there's not much we can do. its not like we control the making of those laws

first off the internet is free just the vehicle to get you on it cost money. and TV is still free it just takes an antenna
a failed analogy is just that a failed analogy

"Dudes killing people in the Mideast" huh. If only I could say what I wanted right now without being permanently kicked out of DP.

It's not rational to compare air to the internet/cable.

But if you must, blame Al Gore and Ted Turner.

Unless you live on some orbital habitat or in an underground vault I don't know about, reasonably clean air is free.

The reason they can charge for internet and cable (not to mention, in many cases, electricity, gas, water, and sewage) is that they have control of the infrastructure their companies installed and maintain so that you even have the option to use those utilities.

Granted, in many cases this is a monopoly to one degree or another, since competition would require extra installations of redundant infrastructure.

Now, personally, I would be happier if some and/or all utilities had their transferal infrastructure (power lines, pipes, cables, etc) be public property, with the maintenance contracted out....

And open up the market for anyone with the capability to provide the necessary services...

But that seems unlikely.

I pay a hell of a lot for clean air as it is; electric rates are higher because of the CAA, and the Carbon Tax increased costs of almost everything, and I pay about 15 - 20% more for diesel fuel than gasoline costs because of the new regulations to reduce emissions (diesel used to be about 75% the cost of gasoline), and many other hidden taxes and fees that increase the cost of everything from food to... well, air.

So in short, I already do, so no... no more.

You can still get internet for around that price (probably less when you consider inflation). My grandparents pay $10/month for unlimited-access dial-up. It only costs more if you want faster access speeds.

TV also used to be free I think costs around $30-$200/month (I can live without that, but I know people invented and no longer have it for free)

You can still get free TV, you just have to buy a digital antenna, which can be had for as little as $10. You only have to pay if you want access to the greater variety of channels that cable offers.

Your analogies fail because you're comparing a better product to a worse one, and complaining that the better product costs more. Of course it does.

That makes no sense. You're internet is not free nor will it ever be free. People have to run the servers and running the servers costs money. Someone has to run lines to your house and provide you with that service.

There's no such thing as a free lunch, so I don't know why you think you'd get free internet.

Air is a natural resource and requires no help whatsoever to enter and exit your lungs. Learn the difference.

And wtf was with the option "No way it should be free I'm a socialist"? I think the only political side that has ever suggested paying for air has been the left. You truly need to educate yourself.

You not only need to make your choices different, for example "No Way! it should be free I'm a socialist" is a load of crap, since not everyone who doesn't want to "pay for clean air" are socialist. Actually it is the environmentalist faction of the socialistic liberals that are trying to make people pay.

You also need to learn your history. Some portions of early development on network/wan was done with government funding but also funding from other sources and the military didn't actually take control of it until 1975 and Milnet, the military only portion was broken away into a separate net in 1983. The early work was done by private individuals and the government became a "customer" to them. UUCP and Usenet were completely private developments done by college students. The World Wide Web, WWW, which most people mistakenly call the internet was also developed sans government involvement. Only from '75 until '83 did the military have any control of or responsibility for designing or building the internet. Yes, the TCP/IP connect was primarily developed to meet military needs, but even it was not totally funded or controlled by the military. Overall, the military played only a small role in the development of what we now call the internet. One of the reasons for the break from the military in '83 was conflicts between the government and commercial users. The military now maintains SIPRNET/Milnet and that is the only portion they have controlled or influenced since '83.

If you would not be overrun with anger but be able to think logicaly, you could insult me just the same without breaking any rules, however I can tell that you are quick to judge slow to understand type. I have a "friend" who "served" in Iraq and Afghanistan who comes to my place to drink for free, because he's my friend, not because he is an idiot (which he is) and we don't talk about politics because I don't want to hurt his pride, but when I did and everyone got pissed off in my bar, I should point out that the people who actually WERE in the "battle" are not so pissed off, it's the people who never did anything that find the need to "stand up" to this idiocy. like the politicians who want to "support our brave kids in uniform" yet none of the senators/congressmen even had their children "serving" in Iraq/Afghanistan. fn pathetic. and then there is this poker player McCain who fell off the plane and was rescued by Asians who now is considered a war hero. SICK society, SICK!!!!!!!!

So you are taking back your "dudes killing people in the mid east" post? Good.

Wow...talk about the mother of all failed analogies....

I think heavy fines against those polluting my/your air would be sensible. That's the fair price. Put the polluters out of business. With the realities of Global Warming, we need to have a "take no prisoners", "no holds barred" approach to our atmosphere. If that is socialist, fine. It is more just common sense.

Except our vehicles and power plants actually pollute more because of EPA stupidity in measurements and other things. The "science" behind the cause of "global warming" is filled with errors, incompleteness. Many of their organizations, such as the UN have been caught using discredited data, falsified data, have been caught spying, lying, cheating, etc.

In the absolute state of disrepair that the whole environmental mess is at the moment, who do you think should police that "take no prisoner's" "no holds barred" approach? Turn over total power of it to the government? After all they have done such a stellar job with every program they have ever ran. Come to think of it, Has the government actually ever ran any program in a Helpful, Organized, efficient manor without fraud, favoritism, cronyism, abuse of power, mismanagement?

Has anyone? Anywhere?

Right. OK. I see. You just choose to give up. Compared to Genghis Khan, I think Social Security works magnificent. TSA, Homeland Security, Dept of Energy, Education, NRC, SEC, and others don't really work, but provide gov't jobs. Distribution of some of the tax money collected. Defense is Corporate Welfare and it is only one of many, Yeh, there you go, must be I like that welfare for the citizens. Those one vote citizens that can't afford to buy a Senator or Congressman.
