We should arm the Southern Border... Apaches will make short work of coyotes...

Great idea! There is bad blood between apaches and our neighbors to the south that predates the wars with white men. When the Spanish invaded the Apaches home they were ruthless in their killing sprees and here they come again but this time they are coming for your land.

The Spanish are invading the USA? ...and it isn't my land. The Mexicans aren't coming anywhere near New Zealand.

The biggest problem with Mexico is the drug cartels. There are other problems but drugs are the biggest. Deal with the drug problem and half the problem will go away. How to deal with it is another question, however. Legalize it, clamp down, treat it like a military conflict, come up with an invasive GMO crop that has some additional benefit like a nutritious food product or fuel source while it kills off coca or makes it ineffective, who knows?

Over the long term I wouldn't be opposed to Mexico, Canada and the Caribbean eventually being annexed into the US. The key phrase is "over the long term" that will allow plenty of time for those areas to gradually become "Americanized," which is already happening on its own especially culturally. The Bahamas has linked its currency value to the US dollar; a 1 to 1 exchange rate. All of the Caribbean watches American TV and movies and most of their more popular radio stations play American music. In Mexico, students are required to take English classes every single year and as a result almost everyone is bi-lingual. What I've learned is the illegal Mexican immigrants we see in America are not average Mexicans for the most part but are very low economic and social ladder even there comparable to our homeless and welfare class. When I was in Mexico this year most of the cars I saw on the road were newer than mine. We got to drive through a residential neighborhood and it looked like a typical middle-class American neighborhood. We saw a Sam's Club and a grocery store and it looked like we could have been in Louisiana or Georgia.

Imperialism was tried back in the 19th. century. It didn't work out so well for the imperialists nor for the nations in their empires.

Imperialism has been tried for all of human history, actually.

What are of Mexico did you go to that the cars were newer?

Yes, it has.

And it hasn't proven terribly practical in the modern world, has it?
I think it's a mixed bag. The US has certainly benefited from it, hasn't it? Considering the nation started on the eastern seaboard and went from there.

It benefited from having won the revolutionary war at any rate.

Looking back, I see I misinterpreted your post. I was thinking in terms of the US being a colony, and not a colonizer. Certainly, the US benefited from westward expansion into territories mostly occupied by various tribes of native Americans. I'm not sure how that would apply to a modern day takeover of neighboring countries, as was suggested above, however.

It didn't benefit from western expansion, taking lands from Mexico, etc? It didn't benefit from gunboat diplomacy?

I just find it very odd to say imperialism always fails. Sometimes it does, sometimes it doesn't.

Back to the OP topic ..

.. Before Obama can legalize any illegal aliens he has to put a cap on it.

So something will have to then be done to keep more from sneaking under the cap.

Thus, if he behaves with any rational thinking about protecting his nation's borders, something considerably more will need to be done than has been done in the past.

We have a Coast Guard.

Maybe we need a Border Guard.

That would, understandably, be a military branch.

Land mines. Very effective relativly cheap.

We have a border guard. It is called the Border Patrol.

i have zero issue closing off the border using NG troops, along with a mix of the newer technology

i dont know what will happen to the 14-20 million illegals already here....but someone, someplace has to say enough is enough

do i think we need to build a 30 ft fence across the entire border....no

with technology, drones, and monitors, we should be able to close it without the fence

we need to fix our broken visa policies......

it shouldnt take 10-15 years to come here legally.......

and we HAVE TO toughen the penalties on all employers who employ illegals......

Great .. then let's beef it up to the level of effectiveness!

And change the role from catching to catch and release back to the other side of the line. Or better still do not tolerate them stepping over the line.

Na. Ill rather not look like the Berlin Wall.

That is nothing like the Berlin wall... why compare such tragic/severe parts of human history to something like this?

The Berlin wall... no one was aloud in or out... people wanted to flee a country but had no means to because that country built a wall to keep it's OWN people in.

That is a vastly different concept... you are just trying to score brownie points to hacks...

Absolutely not. That so many people said yes is truly saddening.

Fix our broken visa policies and allow more people to come here legally and we won't "need" militarization either.

Quintana Roo

That is mostly a tourist area.

If you go to the capital, the population is required to buy a new car every three years.

When your car gets to be three years old, they allow you to drive it only 6 days a week.

If you want to get to work every day, you have to have a new car every three years.

There are more new cars sold in the capital, which is D.F., that babies are born.

Anybody that has been to any of Mexico's big cities knows Mexico is not a third world country.

we will still need border control

even if we fix the visa/immigration issues, and more people get to come legally....

there will need to be limits set.....and it still wont be enough for some

so people will still try and cross illegally......

no one wants to wait for anything anymore.....

it is a "give it to me now generation......"

we cant fix the world and all of the problems it has.....

hell, we cant even feed, house, and clothe the ones here already

so yes....we will need border control , and militarization of the border
