"Mediastan"; The True Fifth Estate Bringing the First Amendment to the World

http://truth-out.org/opinion/item/1...ate-bringing-the-first-amendment-to-the-world

"WikiLeaks timed the release of the documentary to coincide with the UK opening weekend of the multimillion dollar commercial movie The Fifth Estate. The release of Mediastan is an open challenge to this deeply biased Hollywood misfire - a bloated fiction that is nothing short of a blatant PR campaign against WikiLeaks."

"On October 17, Mediastan was released in the United States and Canada, and producers offered free downloads of the documentary on the opening week of The Fifth Estate in North America. Many critics called this independent film a success on numerous fronts. Meanwhile, it was reported that The Fifth Estate flopped at the box office all around America, making the worst debut for a Hollywood film opening this year, and it was generally panned in initial reviews.WikiLeaks has undeniably had a huge impact on the world, and unlike The Fifth Estate, this internally produced documentary helps put the history into a more accurate context. Mediastan, directed by journalist Johannes Wahlström and produced by Assange with Sixteen Films, encapsulates the aim of WikiLeaks. Last year, Assange explained the WikiLeaks "manifesto" to l'Espresso; "to collect, publish and defend information about the world that is of significance, that helps people to lead their lives" - noting difficulty in the presence of "many powerful institutions and individuals who derive their power from keeping other people ignorant about their activities." These efforts can be summed up by his earlier remarks on WikiLeaks' task as "taking the First Amendment and giving it to the world.""

"After uncovering many complex threads of censorship, patronage and the far-reaching power of US national and corporate interests through insidious intervention into foreign media, the journey eventually leads to two powerful corporate media institutions, the London Guardian and The New York Times. In an interview with The Guardian's editor, Alan Rusbridger, Assange confronts him about the newspaper's significant removal and reduced publication of US diplomatic cables. Assange gives examples of cables about Uzbekistan in Tashkent that showed connections between the powerful Karimou family and the mafia, Kazakhstan cables that exposed the corruption of an Italian energy company operating in the country and another one that revealed the Bulgarian mafia's penetration of the Bulgarian state. Then Assange asks why The Guardian protects the identity of these organized crime figures which, in effect, serves to conceal and further perpetuate the corruption. Rusbridger describes how the news company fears wealthy power brokers who would use the UK's Libel Court against them, revealing how legal considerations operate in Britain as a form of systemic censorship."

Is Censorship for real?

Are we sheep?

Are we ignorant?

Are we apathetic?

Is Wikileaks being unfairly defamed?

Does the news you read and see on TV represent reality?

Wow. So many terrible, tragic things going on in the world today.

Floods in Bangladesh... Desertification in the Sahel... Piracy off the coast of Africa...

And you're upset about this?!

And you're worried about what, exactly? The United States government has access to some email metadata? What exactly are you e-mailing that has you so scared, anyway??

What is wrong with everybody that they think this NSA stuff is a big deal? Who cares? Why do you think it's a good idea to leak classified government information? Don't you realize that's treasonous??

It's maddening. There are so many real civil rights issues out there. You know, that kind that actually pertain to the physical safety of flesh and blood human beings, rather than theoretical violations of imaginary rights.

In 1977, the Senate found 400 plus CIA, Intelligence assets, agents, etc. working in establishment media. Everything media related has expanded since that time. Does that mean there are now 4,000 operatives within our media, and what do we need them for. Actually, we need somebody watching them, but it is the other way around. Get your head out from behind the tree and maybe you will be able to see the woods.

The official quote that signifies brain freeze or worse. Usually Republican. It means, "I can't refute what you say and I'm going to try to make it sound like something else." Pat answer that only works if another Republican doesn't know what he's talking about. It is a common problem and like the "clap" sticks to a person and is hard to get rid of. You need new sources of information, unless of course, you enjoy the diet of bland pablum practiced by Major Media.

First, I think that you'd better define "censorship" in the context of this thread. It isn't by any means a fixed term.

For instance, it can certainly be said to be a form of censorship if the law forbids someone who receives my stolen credit card number from publishing it online. But do we object to that limitation, even if we are free speech advocates?

It is the controlled nature of Major Media that is objectionable. Control by Gov't and Corporate interests for personal manipulation. I believe it is already illegal to publish stolen credit card numbers.
