Us Massholes are plenty civilized, thank you very much!

:) I know people from Boston. "Loud" is not the same as "civilized".

You said here, so I figured you were implying that you live in Los Angeles also. Outside of San Francisco or Manhattan, there aren't many places more expensive than here.

No, I don't live in LA. I live in Northern NJ, pretty close to NYC.

We are kind of repeating ourselves - I'm not ignoring you, but I figured I would let you have the last word.

Thank you. :2razz:

LOUD?!! I'll have you know I am quiet and demure.

I own my house. It is paid off. Why would I have to move out of my house, or sell my car, for that matter. If I quit my job I would keep them.

Well, you're special, then. Most people don't have a house and car paid off. I suppose if I had both paid off, and already had a good retirement and savings account, then I wouldn't mind retiring on 25k/year. I'd have to have a good supplemental retirement income, though, whether from an IRA or just a good portfolio I could cash in on.

Of course, if you have all that, you're not going to qualify for welfare, anyway, and that seems to be the point of the thread.

That isn't enough money for me. I know people whom are happy enough with 10,000 a year in welfare though.

Then I will sell everything I own so that I do qualify...

Why? That's not a very comfortable life I imagine. You think you would be able to do all kinds of cool things but in reality you'd be too broke to do much of anything.

Exactly. He'd be better off keeping his paid off house and paid off car, quitting his job and getting renters to supply him with cash for cost of living. He'd be poor as **** and have no life, but it would be far, far better than selling everything and going into poverty because he thinks poverty is fun.

A lazy incompotent horrible bum's money is accepted at the same places that the honest hard working patriot's money is accepted.

Of course you would want people to know that you weren't accepting handouts, how else would you be able to enjoy the feeling of superiority?

Be careful though. It's a double edged sword. The lazy incompoent horrible bum will think he is superior to you because he has more money than you. Currently government employees that receive $80,000 in government handouts is superior to a single mom receiving $5,000 in government handouts. Human nature mandates that we find flaws in others to puff ourselves up. You are no exception.

It isn't about feeling superior, it is about self worth.

You say potato. I say potato. <--------I'm not sure this saying works when it is written down.

So you think having self worth and avoiding the government teet is an elitist attitude?

Depends how much you hold yourself above those who have less self worth and do use the "government teet".

If you think you're significantly better than they, then yes, you ARE being a bit elitist.

That's pathetic! With a capital P.

It wasn't that long ago when being on government assistance was a source of personal humiliation. Now not being on government assistance and proud of it is a negative?

This is why I say our government is doomed to follow Greece and Spain. Bankruptcy us unavoidable when society is so lazy and so lacking in morales that they see no shame in using the government to steal from hard working people.

If you were guaranteed a $25,000/year income by the government would you quit your job and stay unemployed?

I know I wouldn't, how about you?

Cash? And assuming this is per person?

Not counting my wifes income I alone make $15,504/yr after taxes. Assuming that the $25,000 is taxed that would mean I'd take home $21,250. So, for 6k plus a year? Hell yes I would quit. Then I'd use that extra $6k to help get a better education so that I could later get a job which made more than 25k/yr.

I didn't say negative.

It all depends on the degree.

If you consider yourself significantly better than someone, and make sure they and everyone nearby is aware that you think this, you're being elitist.

If you just consider yourself better than someone, because of the choices you have made which place you in a better situation, and you don't go around telling everyone they're worse than you for their situation and choices, then you're fine....

Basically....If you're not an ass about it, you're not elitist.

Because some people wouldn't be able to have anything if they didn't take out loans because the price of things is out of reach, especially homes and vehicles. Did you pay cash for your home?

Rent until you can afford a mortgage payment. Be responsible with debt.

Good luck stopping this.

If you can't beat them, join them or you'll get screwed. High horses are actually high unicorns and they usually take you to la la land. It's not a bad place until you wake up to reality.
