Hi all

Simple question here: do you pay cash or with your card? :)

I would say that paying with a card is quite dangerous in terms of privacy - the bank knows all your moves and habits, what you buy, where you go and when you go. I'm not comfortable with that to say the least.

So, what do you think? :wink2:

Yeah, you know I use to think that too, but with the onslaught of surveillance, tracking, picture taking etc etc etc that goes on, mostly voluntarily, what's the use...

You drive on the toll road, IPASS tracks you, you take the Bus, the Bus pass doohickey tracks you, you bring your phone along that tracks you, you get on the internet that tracks you, you drive on the road, city camera's track you, you buy groceries and wanna save 20 to 50 bucks on average, the grocery store tracks you, you put your money in a bank they track you, you put your money in a credit union they track you, you use a currency exchange they track you it's all over man....they're everywhere they're EVERYWHERE!!!!!

Actually it depends on what I am doing. For Hotels, rented cars etc the card has so many benefits and savings that I would be crazy to use cash. In everyday life around the village I would be crazy to try to use my card.

Pretty much everything with a card with some exceptions

Rent is paid by check
some bills are paid over the internet (same principal, but different medium)
certain events like going to the bar or a show (or where I may consume lots of alcohol), cash only for security reasons (if I even do bring a wallet, its usually in my girl's purse or in a secure pocket in my clothes)

my favorite Japanese restaurant, they only take cash and they are worth it.

I think you're being seriously paranoid for little to no reason.

Are you a convicted felon? On a government watch list for some reason?

I never carry cash. Cash is dangerous. Get's you mugged.

I don't do anything wrong, I'm not a "special person of interest", and if some entity wants to track me they're going to do that no matter what I use, do, purchase, or try to hide.

I'm not paranoid enough to think "they're out to get me". I don't wear tin-foil hats to protect myself.

Once had a credit card stolen and about 850 dollars spent on it by thief. Bank covered losses and replaced money in my account.

What do you think the bank would say if I walked in and told them somebody stole 850 in cash from me? Would the bank replace that cash?

I doubt it.

Cash is a pain in the butt. It's going to go away over time. It's not safe to carry and or use/display.

I'm all for using technology to my benefit. A card allows me to track all my purchases and see where my money goes.

If some government/bank/alien wants to see how many times I buy gasoline, go to grocery store, or buy beer I don't give a crap.

Now if I was buying massive quantities of ammunition and pseudo-assault rifle stuff I might be more paranoid.

Are you sure you're not doing something you shouldn't be doing? :2razz:

No but I think the government does.
It has grown so large already. The thought it will know every move of a citizen is scary.

Usually with our credit card. Monthly bills are often paid by direct withdrawal.
And our credit cards are paid off every month.

Our banks mangers and employees know my husband quite well and greet him by name when he goes in.

And yes, they handle our finances and investments quite well.
If they didn't my husband would find another bank.

Have you any idea the size of the database needed, and the number of people needed to maintain it, let alone actually analyze and study such a thing???? The sheer volume of data would be staggering.

Besides, video surveillance is much more conclusive isn't it?

Watch out for those satellites.

Better hide.

I rarely use a credit card for anything other than internet purchases and greatly prefer cash - or in the case of more expensive purchases - a check.

I believe much of this is generational as my two kids in their thirties think nothing of using their cards for very small purchases as a matter of routine.

I pay for things almost exclusively with a credit card. I use cash only very rarely.

Personally, I see a ton of benefits to using a credit card, and no real drawbacks. I'm more protected from theft and fraud with a credit card. It's more convenient because I don't have to go to the ATM on a regular basis. And I get cash back. I understand that the bank can track my purchasing habits if I use a card, but I really don't care.

Most everything with card, heck I just bought a car with a credit card. We were just looking for a small 1-2 year loan to get a nice used car and when the girl offered a 0% interest credit card for 12 months I was sold. It was a little tricky finding a dealer that took the card without hesitation but it worked out. A lot of people I told were surprised you could buy a car with a credit card, I didn't even think about it either until the girl at the bank mentioned it.

The government and big business want a cash-less society so they can track every transaction.

Don't let them have their way.

I probably divide it up between card and cash fairly even. But when I get my credit card bills they are paid off in their entirely. I never have a running balance.

Cash is the king, but not because of the privacy concerns. Just paranoid fear of debt. The first-generation immigrant mentality, I guess. I do use credit cards that give good points, but only up to 15% of the limit, and only when I know for sure that I will be able to pay off the entire balance the same month.

I mostly use a credit card.

It provides me with a quick method of tracking my expenses, I get cash back on the card, and it's paid in full every month.

If I want to buy something I don't feel like any one having a record of, I pay cash.

I agree that the potential is there to be dangerous. I'm married so I don't really get to decide what all my habits are. Some of them are picked out for me. I love cash but my wife believes cash disappears much faster than using a debit card. She gets violently ill when I take out cash. I answered truthfully on this survey because I do mostly use a card but I certainly prefer cash for the exact reasons that you stated.

This gives the bank and potentially the government all of my spending habits. I'm not comfortable with that. I know that data currently isn't being used to suck my brain out or anything but I don't like giving away that kind of power. Using a bank card also sets you up for overdraft fees when you miscalculate your check book. That has probably happened 3 times in my life so I suppose that's not a sufficient argument for switching to a pure cash spending regimen.

I use my card but I would be overjoyed if I could switch to a pure cash mode of commerce engagement but I'm married to someone who breaks out in hives when she sees large sums of money. :surrender
