I would oppose it.Government is supposed to take a neutral stance on religion just like the first part of the 1st amendment says.

Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof

1.) I strongly oppose it
2.) I agree, well at least our government is

But...theocracies work SO well all over the world......LOL

Strongly oppose, our country is secular.

Isn't the American system of government buggered up enough without tossing religion into the mix?

Even as a diehard, conservative christian i oppose this.

Also note: this thread isnt to bash Christianity itself or used to make a blanket judgment about it. Im one myself and of course i would never support such insane nonsense. Save that for something else.

Well, I am a Christian... I like to think a reasonably devout one... and I am not really that keen on the idea.

Now, even though making Christianity the state religion, either in a state or in the US, would not necessarily institute a theocracy or mean anyone would be MADE to practice it... it would just mean it was the "official" religion like C of E is in England... even so I don't know that it is such a hot idea.

Typically the mixing of religion and government has resulted in corruption of the religion.

Then there's the details and implications. Is this declaration of state religion merely nominal (in name only), or will there be legal or legislative implications?

A very important factor in my own Christian beliefs is that one must choose it freely; to have it imposed by force renders it meaningless hypocrisy.

So, as I said... not all that keen on the idea.

No, but neither do I support the notion that religious people be precluded from politics or precluded from using their religion to inform their politics.

I think the idea should be put on the auction block, treat it like naming a stadium or arena. Get bids from all the world's religions and see who wants it most. Who knows- Tibetan prayer flags might dress up the halls of Congress nicely. The stripes on the flag replaced with a gold crescent on a green background might look sharp. How about a Star of David on every dollar bill?

WHut, what? :)

It just seems like a question that's somewhat outside of the mainstream is all. While you're bound to get a couple fruitcakes now and again who would seriously suggest such a thing, it's so fringe that the debate hasn't entered the public arena in any way.

You may as well start a poll titled "Would you support a bill legalizing nun-beating?"

Except that the poll he linked shows 32% in favor or strongly in favor. That's more than "a couple fruitcakes." Of course, i have not heard of any amendment attempt that came close, but there certainly is still a large amount of religious intrusion into our laws, to this day.

1.) I agree but the poll had me curious if there was actually nutters here that would support it, i can only think of 3 that probably would. Magically they havent voted or posted
2) ump the GOP already tried in north Carolina but of course it failed.

3.) I agree with you but apparently there are some nutters out there MAYBE even 25% of the country.

No religion should be official in any country. Religion has no place in government officially.

I really doubt anyone, no matter how religious, who has a good understanding of the Constitution, how our system of government works, and the dangers of mixing ONE religion with that government would day anything other than "absolutely not". I'm not sure what you are trying to accomplish by this poll, J.

Why would a country need an official religion? What possible benefit would that serve other than to disenfranchise people who weren't of that religion?

Oh, **** me, I forgot about North Carolina.

Don't you love it when your question is also the answer?

I would strongly oppose it. To the degree that if religious laws started being passed and enforced, I would leave the country.

We are a nation with many Christians not a Christian Nation.

No, but neither do I support the notion that religious people be precluded from politics or precluded from using their religion to inform their politics.

Which brings up an interesting question:

Where's the line between having your religion inform your politics and writing religious laws?

Why does there have to be a line? People try to enforce their moral beliefs on others all the time. Environmentalists are a good example.
