It seems that people had more personal liberty, less regulations and were less likely to be imprisoned under the King of England and English rule than Americans have now. I read about half of the members of this forum always calling for still more rules, regulations, government monitoring and more reasons to put people in jail.

What was the purpose of the American Revolution for independence?

People back then had spines, and they balked at the seemingly infinite power of the crown to tax their endeavors. The sugar tax, which hurt rum production, which was a leading export at the time, was sort of the last straw.

They came here for religious freedoms. It ended becoming a group of colonies, then "the" states.

Every single option in your poll is retarded and without bearing in history. The reason for the revolution is people in America wanted to be the ones to make the rules.

Other: No taxation without representation.

2% tax on tea. Keep in mind, we were still British at the time. And they taxed tea.

The short story is that the colonists and the crown had irreconcilable differences, and war was the only way to settle the great many issues.

Americans were taxed less than Britains were at that time... they identified themselves as Americans (mostly) and didn't like the laws they were subject to.
