Fate of the Republican Party

Tea partiers voted for Dubya, for McCain and for Romney. They have no meaningful pull in the party, because they'll always bend to the party's will.

With nation wide demographics stacking up against any kind of right-wing faction, the growing enmity between the Tea Party and Establishment among Republicans has me wondering about the eventual fate of the party. There's only so much gerrymandering and Voter ID laws can do to stall out the demise, and the two sides won't be able to share power much longer with their constituents making such contradictory demands.

I have been around a long time and I have seen where one party or the others demise was predicted not only on a site like this, but in the newspapers etc. The Republican Party was dead and one its way out after Watergate and the 1974 elections. Then along came Reagan a short 6 years later and all the talk was about a Republican lock on the presidency. The democrats would never win another presidential election it was said. Today it is the GOP on the outs again. I personally think if lasts November’s election were held today, Romney would win. Sometimes elections are all about a matter of timing and Obama’s timing last year was excellent. Elections all boil down to what is happening now, how I feel at the moment, am I doing better or worse.

It's certainly not the party I remember from my "youth", nor is it the party it was 20-30 years ago. I liked it better then. I despise it now; but I also despise the democratic party, which is certainly not the party it was 20-30 years ago. Eventually a new party may emerge that I actually like, or republicans/democrats might actually stop working for the good of the party and return to working for the good of the nation.

The republican party itself isnt goin anywhere

hopes and dreams about either party dying is simply that hopes and dreams.

Now what is going to happen to the GOP in the near future. Same thing that happens all the time, changing of wrapping paper thats all.


There are many core republicans that cant stand what the party has become stereotypical but thats just the nature of politics.


They have to drop the nonsensical battle on social issues and "scrapping" of the healthcare bill.

Focus on fiscal conservatism and since most republicans agree with 75% of the healthcare bill slowly but surely tweek it.
Another tactic they most use is while being fiscal conservative, shut up the squeaky wheels and all the hyperbole about people on unemployment etc.

Change within the GOP is going to be hard. They've been propagandizing that any deviation from right-wing politics is communism for so long that any change in policies will cause massive internal problems. We've already been seeing that. They used too many divisive issues that were quick and easy gains for themselves, but have since turned -- like gay marriage and amnesty for immigrants. They're painted in a corner pretty badly. I'm glad to see them suffer for the ridiculously overboard politics they've engaged in for the last decade and a half, too.

The Establishment will win, for one simple reason: For the Republican Party, winning is the most important thing. You can't get ANY of what you want unless you win. Therefore, the beginning of the end of the Tea Party is at hand. When Hillary or Biden wins in a landslide in 2016, the Establishment will purge the loons and re-establish the GOP as a rational party, one that treats all Americans as worthy of being listened to -- racial minorities, women, gays, immigrants who are (or who want to become) American citizens. It's the only way they can win in the 2020s and beyond.

As Mark Shields, the PBS pundit who used to work for Senator Ed Muskie, once said, A movement is in trouble when it is more concerned with purging heretics than it is with winning converts. The Tea Party is concerned with purging heretics, and the "heretics" are the GOP Establishment.
