Option 6. I usually tend to commit suicide.

As I've gotten older, I've thought about end of life issues - I think most people these days do. I am a very independent person and if/when the time comes when that independence is no longer assured, I believe I will find a way to cease living rather than have a life dependent totally on others.

Yes, and it appears to have been successful many times too. (jk) ;)

I agree. I think suicide should be a legal choice as it is in some other countries around the world. The only requirement should be a period of counseling to determine if the decision is based on rational consideration and valid concerns (i.e. aging, permanent or recurring pain, illness, etc.) Then it should be doctor assisted.

Never tried, never will. People who commit suicide are cowards (outside of those suffering from painful and/or debilitating diseases).

To each his own really. People have their reasons.

Most of lifes problems are fixable at least to an acceptable level. I think what most people who commit suicide suffer from is seeing a way out of these problems. No path seems to be present so their problems seem insurmountable to them. They feel that they will always carry these burdens and life will always be this unpleasant.

Oh I'm sure that there are a number of diseases. I would say Tay-Sachs, but that comes at birth and usually kids don't make it very long. I think multiple sclerosis is pretty painful as well. Some cancers are exceptionally painful.

I wouldn't say they are cowards, as most of the people I have known who were suicidal, were clinically depressed to the point of losing a firm grasp on reality, and were not thinking rationally at all. They see it as a way to end their emotional suffering.

Then there is the onset of demetia, alzheimers, and simple aging. Why should a person be bed bound in a nursing home merely lingering? There are all sorts of reasons why a person might choose to die rather than simply continue in a life of pain and misery. The counseling period I suggest would separate those who are merely depressed from those who are truly tired of life.

Why not?

Naturally, a normal person would ask… “Suicide – Why?” The fact that I asked “Why not?” establishes from the very beginning the difference in how I viewed life.

......Personally, I didn’t believe suicide necessarily must result from a terrible problem, or problems. ......It seemed to me there are six major reasons people do not seriously consider suicide.

1. The first and foremost reason is “Why?” In other words, “Why would I even contemplate such a thing?” These people have never considered suicide, don’t understand it, are probably happy or at least not depressed, fulfilled by work, family, school or some combination.

2. And, that’s probably the second major reason people don’t commit suicide – loved ones. For most of us, we are either married or have children or have parents or close brothers and sisters. Most of us have other people that depend upon us either financially or emotionally.

3. The third most likely reason people want to stay alive is probably related to wanting to see the future.

4. If I had to have guessed, I would have said the fourth most prevailing reason to stay alive is because of accomplishments. People want to accomplish as much as they can in their lives and they don’t want to run out of time before they do it.

5. The fifth reason is the recently popular term “bucket list” – meaning the things you want to have experienced before you kick the bucket.

6. The last major reason I thought of for why people want to live indefinitely is the whole notion of leaving a legacy.

“I do not fear death. I had been dead for billions and billions of years before I was born, and had not suffered the slightest inconvenience from it.” ― Mark Twain

Excerpted from Martin Manley : "My Life and Death" Martin Manley Life and Death - SUICIDE Preface

An interesting read and very specific to this conversation. Written during the final 14 months of a ( U.S. ) nationally known sports statistician's life as viewed with a mathematician's logic.

I just gave some examples that were obvious. There are many physical reasons that I would understand. I just have no sympathy for the "life sucks, end it all" crowd.

why do you think many people commit suicide ,gipper?

Personally, I have never contemplated suicide.

However, I have known several people, not the least of whom was my father, who have either made serious attempts or at least postulated the idea. Honestly, I don't care what the reason (illness, cowardliness, curiosity, boredom, fear), if someone want's to take their own life and won't be directly harming another person in the process, they should be free to do so.

I'm quite sure that life is actually the only thing that any human being actually has some measure of control/ real ownership over. They should be free to do with it as they wish.

As I've gotten older, I've thought about end of life issues - I think most people these days do. I am a very independent person and if/when the time comes when that independence is no longer assured, I believe I will find a way to cease living rather than have a life dependent totally on others.

I don't know, I think that I'd just make everyone wait on me. "I'm old bitches! Get over here!"

I've had one relative and one friend off themselves. When I was in the service I responded to more suicides and attempts than I can count. I absolutely HATE the concept.

While I understand that everyone has probably thought of it at one time or another actually bridging that gap is horrible. It tears up the survivors when it's "successful" and damages everyone when it isn't.

Well, I had the benefit, some might call burden, of being the primary caregiver for both my elderly parents in their last years and neither one was happy to lose their independence, their ability to do what they wanted when they wanted and do things for themselves. Even when they couldn't talk or express it, you could see it in their eyes. I'm not sure if having me look after them made it any easier than if I was a stranger, but I feel confident a stranger wouldn't have provided the care I did. And I've also had the benefit of seeing a relative in a "retirement" home, my mom's sister, my aunt, and my mom made me swear never to let her end up in a place like that. She didn't, and I'm determined to make sure I don't either.

Never tried, but if I did, I think I would choose sky diving without a parachute. That just strikes me as an exhilarating way to die.

This is the reason I've stayed alive, I wanted to see the Movie version of Lord of the Rings...well I have...

Gee, I guess there's nothing left to live for... ;)

What Luther said and some of what liz said. Suicide is a most selfish act. I don't believe people in their right mind can do it.

I've never thought about it. Having known or responded to people who did or who tried, I can't imagine people knowingly causing others so much grief.
