Is this racist?

Does racism occur in this video?

I told you what the scenario was. Also, that scenario was explained in the video itself. Would you like me to explain it again? And profiling is not mutually exclusive to racism, as was the case here in that racism was the basis of that profiling.

"Racism was the basis of that profiling." As you nutz?? Did you not pay any attention at ALL to the FBI crime stats I posted?? Really, Cardinal, it's late. I don't have the patience to dicker with you on my conclusion that it's profiling based on hard statistics from the FBI. If you choose to ignore those statistics and tell me I'm prejudiced against blacks -- or that I'm racist?? You're wrong...you have nothing to back you up...and you fail to present a cogent argument that anything other than profiling was involved.

Read up on racism. It isn't racist to be a realist.

Edit: Are you related to Jesse Jackson? Al Sharpton?

And now . . .

we dispute FBI statistics. Come ON, Boo!!

Not what I said. I said that if we assume it, it will become true. Where we look for it, we find it. Where we don't, we don't find it. Not doubting any numbers.

Looked to me they were dressed the same, doing the exact same acts, answering with the same language ("it's not your bike is it? It will be mine. Essential stealing it.").

the second guy didn't get to the power saw because they were on him so fast.

This experiment has been done many times, many places, many conditions, and results always the same. That should at least cause pause.

Follow your instincts Boo. I'm going to follow mine. It just so happens that the stats seem to support my instincts on this particular issue. I do respect your efforts to take the high ground. I just hope they don't get you hurt.

I fail to see a difference. But . . . whatever floats your boat.

C'mon Boo. You're holding out. You got some of that skunky bud, don't ya? You ol' son-of-a-gun. ;)

I got to deal with the reality 'cause I only got this swag. :(

My thoughts exactly. Your last sentence? I was tempted to post something a bit more direct. ;)

Never have. Grew up in the worse parts of Jacksonville Florida. Much easier to get away with crime if you're not a minority.

Well, it's Boo. I love ol' Boo. One of my favorite around here. I'm gonna always be respectful and nice to him.

It's not complicated. Go to a classroom and assume all blonds are smarter. They will be. Or dumber. It'll work that way as well.

So what are you saying, Maggie, that the witnesses in that video took the time to google FBI crime statistics before they decided on how to react to two equally dressed people of equal age acting equally suspiciously? Please enlighten me on how those statistics came into play when the white teenager used tool after tool to break the bike lock, admitted to anybody who bothered to ask that the bike wasn't his, and how those statistics affected the witnesses' decisions to just move along.

Yeah, that's racist, Maggie.

It blows my mind how many people have no frigging idea what racism is. It is so misused as to make those that misuse it look ... well, not bright.

Please. I'm not saying anyone Googled anything. I'm saying the statistics bear out my position...that it's profiling and not racism. One doesn't have to Google to know the truth of crime statistics in this country. At least most of us don't. I didn't know them until I Googled . . . but I'd heard, shall we say, rumors?? The statistics are overwhelming. You know that . . . you'd just rather ignore statistics and cry racism.

Racist? Don't be ridiculous!

But hey ...I got a good look at that black kid stealing the bike.
He looked like he was up to no good.
He looked like he was on drugs or something.
Something about him wasn't right.
At one point I think he had his hand in his waist-band.
These assholes always get away...
Someone should have shot him in self defense.

I know!! Don't you just love that name?? Boo. I mean who could get mad at Boo??

I dunno. Casper couldn't make himself even say the word. Boo Radley was actually a very mysterious character in To Kill a Mokingbird. He was feared by many. A guiet introvert kind of guy up front but a real good guy underneath.

Yeah, we love our Boo.

You hear that Boo?!?!? You ol' dreamer, you.

So basically what you're saying is that statistics and profiling mean that a white person acting extremely suspiciously must not be doing anything wrong. Am I hearing you correctly?

Don't have to Google. Just turn on the 6:00 news.

You are really working hard for that stretch.

Hey, I bring up the fact that two people dressed the same and acted equally suspiciously and the only thing she can respond with is crime statistics. At first I thought she was avoiding the question, but now I'm thinking she was actually answering it.

I thought this might help:

In short, racial profiling is biased, because:

1) It is based on misunderstanding the scientific theory of probability.

2) It contradicts the mission of the justice system, which has two purposes: First, to punish the guilty, and second, to protect the innocent. Racial profiling has violated the principle of protecting innocent individuals by turning thousands of innocent people across the country into the victims.

3) It creates a self fulfilling prophecy, because when officers only focus on certain categories of individuals (yes, they will catch some criminals among them), they will also bypass many criminals about whom they do not do profiling.

you're still comparing the reactions of two different groups of people (which says nothing about possible and likely editing of the material). For instance notice that in the second group, a significant number of those pictured making an issue of the scene are bikers, while in the first video no bikers are represented.

As someone else pointed out these kinds of studies aren't exactly new, and they turn up the same results over and over again, which is that reactions to the black person dressing and behaving the same garners more suspicion. If this were an isolated study I'd agree with you, but it's not.

Symantics. We all get the point of the video, edited or not. I don't think anyone would argue with, a black person cutting a bike lock, would arouse more suspicion than the white guy.

The question is, is it racist? I think it is definitely a profiling based on learned behaviors, awareness and experience. It has also been justified with overwhelming statistics.

But is it racist? I honestly don't know. It's not racist to me. It's just common sense. But to the next guy, that common sense might be considered racist. I dunno.

lol @ calling this a study. Look, I'm not arguing racism doesn't exist, or even that none of these people are racist. I am saying drawing any type of conclusion from this is foolish. Because you are comparing the reaction of two separate individuals under two distinct circumstances. Not to mention the issues with selective editing

If this were an isolated study I'd agree with you, but it's not.

then post something academic oriented with actual merit. Not some bozo segment from trashtv.com
