Maybe

and there are certain belief systems out there (or maybe just chaos magic) that change the dictates of their belief systems semi-frequently although I don't think they're very widespread.

Such as?

I don't know. Part of me does, the other part of me does not. Regardless of that, I think that the more people who edge toward believing in a god, the better it is for the rest of us.

Really?
My belief on the subject and yours too are just fine, we're reasonable people, but it looks to me like the more people believe in God, the more screwed up the world gets.

Is that the name of the religion? It sounds like that's a theory, so I wonder which religions practice this theory, especially ones that would believe in God? It sounds more pagan IMO.

I don't think it exists within a religion, it's just a belief system of shifting belief systems which could end up including none, one, or multiple deities.

It's very similar to some pagan beliefs. IOW, witchcraft. ;)

I think it usually provides a good moral outlook as well as incentive or pressures to abide by the morals, lest eternal punishment await.

For me, understanding that our influence goes on eternally is sufficient. I don't think anyone really wants to poison the well. I think that's a much more sound motivation than eternal personal punishment, especially given the 'this world doesn't matter' connotations.

But if how you act helps determine the rest of your existence, that aides motivation. The fact that at many given times an individual will not is a valid weakness, but not a full denunciation of the concept of controlling behavior through faith.

I believe that how I act determines the rest of my existence, through my influence that continues after my physical death. I don't need magic or a conscious afterlife to understand that. Isn't that a more solid foundation, and based less on concern for ones personal well-being?

It works for you, certainly. As for me, I don't have faith in mankind, and I think mankind needs fear in their belly to do right.

It would be a very sad world if there was no God. To think that this life is all there is.

... Why would you need more? You could try making the best out of this life by not being extremely denigrating towards anybody who doesn't share your political views, homosexuals and women.

I think that people who can be trusted with the concept of 'God' have their 'good moral outlook' built in and those who look to their god for their morality are inevitably going to pervert the meaning of 'good'.

I have fear, that my influence ("spirit/soul") could suck. And that's all we have after physical death.

 It's a modern magic form, so I suppose it depends of your definition of pagan and witchcraft but that's besides the point, the point is there's at least one belief system that involves switching belief systems.

"Some common sources of inspiration include such diverse areas as science fiction, scientific theories, traditional ceremonial magic, neoshamanism, Eastern philosophy, world religions, and individual experimentation. Despite tremendous individual variation, chaos magicians (sometimes called "chaotes"[2]) often work with chaotic and humorous paradigms, such as the worship of Hundun from Taoism or Eris from Discordianism, and it is common for chaotes to believe in whatever god suits their current paradigm and discard it when necessary."

Why rely on belief? Why not know? Why not at least determine if it is likely or not? Belief is just what you want to be true. Relying on belief instead of knowledge is a terrible idea.

my adventure of questioning this universe and its secrets is a neverending story for me as long as l live

not every believer is uneducated bigot

What's other? I guess that would be "I don't know?"

hi chris

we dont know of course but we just believe because we cant know

if we knew we wouldnt call it a belief

you may remember what l had said about the deistic interpretation of holy books

we may both believe in a god and use our mind at the same time

I voted "no". It's my opinion that the "god" of the bible does not exist.

I'm open to the concept that there might be something "bigger" out there that we can't define or understand, but the "god" that most humans arrogantly and stubbornly insist exists, most certainly does not.

I choose to believer there is a God. That he or she (really both) wants us to be our better selves. But I don't believe a God that has both an old deal and a new deal is as inflexible and hateful as some paint him or her (really both) to be. I worry most about hose who insist they know God's will, and that others don't. Those who have no doubt are the most dangerous IMHO. But if God wanted no doubt, he or she (really both) would leave no room for doubt.
hi boo

l think they are not true believers

they are more like radicals who think of themselves as god

Yes, I do remember our conversation, and I agree. :)

You should probably search a little more than just Wiki. Wiki doesn't always have good information. If you just google Chaos Magic and witchcraft, you will see that this is a theory that witches of today do apply. It IS a pagan belief. It doesn't really have anything to do with God. :) I don't know what would make you think that there aren't modern witches and pagans.

No soul. I adore humanity frankly, I think we are a lovely lovely fluke. If there is some greater being that orchestrated all of this, than that being is beyond our ability to define or certainly beyond mine. It is frightening to stare into that abyss, isn't it.

I would say fascinating not frightening.

Or fearful that such things may be less certain, or have the need to feel better by degrading others. Any way you slice it, they are the furthest away from anything righteous.
