Should the US Boycott the Russian Olympics?

There's no reason to respect the disrespectful. If they burned witches, we'd probably have to pass on that as well.

Killing someone vs. some non lethal civil penalty are not comparable.

In this case they are. I could have said if they jailed blacks and that would have been closer but the point is the same, we don't approve of it, strongly.

If individuals or groups want to boycott, then fine. When you cross the line to attempting to get the USA to boycott the Olympics, that is so hypocritical, I don't know what to say.

Think about it. The boycott is a statement that you don't like what Russia has done. Fine. You base it on taking away other people's civil liberties/right. So, isn't it hypocritical to attempt taking our athletes rights away who want to compete?

Where is this Right to compete in the Olympics? That must be a new one.

The Olympic charter has rules against political expression. Try Mexico City where two Black USA athletes were kicked out of the country. What goes on behind closed doors... We don't need a repeat of 1980 and 1984. Obama once again shows his conservatism. Don't vote in 2014 as in 2010.

Maybe a poor choice in words, but why should authoritarian action be taken, as a nation, when it doesn't matter to all of us. Why can't people accept other cultures?

As it should.

One tradition of the Olympics is to bring people together. Not separate us with wedge issues.

Some aspects of some cultures are unacceptable, at least under these conditions. Were our people not in harm's way, this would likely not be an issue but they made it one.

I see...

Your response if for a "nanny state style" protection, rather than freedom.

Anyone traveling to any nation is a fool if they don't check with the State department, or other source, the laws of the nation they are traveling to. There is normally highlights of such laws that Americans need to be clearly aware of.

Tell me. Will a boycott protect people traveling there who have nothing to do with the Olympics?

Only in the way that they will be well aware by then why "we" aren't going.

So what do you say to the athletes who devoted so much for their training, just for the chance of being an Olympian?

Why would you take that away from them like Carter did?

Do you think they will care about someone elses agenda?

TD, not only are all black men not pimps, the vast majority of them (well over 99%) are not. And in case you were wondering, the vast majority of black women (well over 99%) are not prostitutes.

pimp has nothing to do with color. carter was a pimp in 1980 for example

Carter was a typical left wing pimp

he wanted to be seen as DOING something

so he pissed all over a small group and made them pay for his impotent feel good attempt to look like he was doing something.

That asshole should have been impeached for that and sued into the poorhouse by the athletes whose dreams he ruined.

I see this occurrence as a complete disgrace. How did a stadium full of germans doing the hitler salute contribute anything positive to anything? Sometimes principals are more important than a goddamn track and field contest, but even by that measure, Germany won the most medals that year. The olympics did not take place in 1940 or 1944 because, oh yeah, some asshole who gave the opening speech in Berlin started a world war. Jews in particular were already being treated abhorrently, and taking part in the olympics made the world complicit.

I do want to update this though so some may reconsider their earlier opinions. Mine continues to be that they should move the olympics or ban team russia. I see this as no different from the gestapo. In fact, many of the thugs are 'neo nazis' and murders, with no legal repercussions, continue to take place.
Which is still remembered and talked about?

To my understanding gay athletes may compete. They just can't smooch people of the same sex in public, participate in gay rights demostrations, etc. while in Russia.

Even the NFL prohibits heterosexual encounters the weekends of games.

That has to do with ability to preform. Engaging in sexual activity causes a lowering of testosterone meaning they will not play as aggressively or as strong.

What do you say? You say - I'm sorry, but sometimes in this life you have to take a stand, and this is one of those times.

its so easy for liberals to sacrifice what others have worked so hard for

It's not easy. Doing what's right rarely is.

its easy for someone like you to tell others they ought to piss away their lifes' dreams so you can feel good about yourself

I have a great idea-if you aren't on the olympic team, you should have no frigging say as to whether they go or not

It doesn't work that way. I'm sorry, and it's not about anyone's feelings. As a country there are things we represent, things we cherish, and things we don't. The individual, if patriotic, has to suffer sometimes in order to make that true. It's what we ask for when we send young men and women to war, and it's what we ask for when we tell our athletes that we are staying home.

sorry, keeping a few gays happy is not worth the cost

they should pursue their dreams and tell people like you to mind their own business

It has nothing to do with happy. It has to do with what is right. That can have a very high cost.

stop telling other people to pay a cost you cannot

why do far lefties want others to make sacrifices so you can feel good even though the actions you want others to take won't do squat?
