Should the US Boycott the Russian Olympics?

Should the US Boycott the Russian Olympics?

I think you've missed my point. I oppose a boycott because it would be stupid.
Got it. I thought you were addressing me. My remark regarding Obama and Putin was tongue in cheek, but I also wanted to point out their similarities.

YES, but not beacuse of the "homosexual" issue or Mr. Snowden's presence. The US should be boycotting ALL foreign athletic events... The World Cup, The Olympics, etc... because they inspire interaction with foreign people in foreign lands.

that has to be even more stupid than the comments that demand a bunch of athletes be sacrificed to pander to a loudly yapping group of extremists.

What exactly is the outrage over?

I think we ought to stop trying to change the cultures of other countries and let them fight their own battles -- just as we've fought ours. Outside of genocide, we ought to keep our noses out of other people's struggles.

:bravo::2bow:

Random Thoughts:

1) The Olympics were supposed to be a venue for countries to put their politics aside, not force them onto others;

2) The Olympics are so corporate that they should be ended;

3) This is a stupid issue;

4) Winter Olympics suck anyway. But for curling that makes me think "You know, you could maybe still be an Olympic athlete one day", I would not watch

5) I am sure MSNBC will still gay them up just fine all on their own; and

6) Only athletes from the states that have gay marriage should boycott. Athletes from the majority of states that have banned gay marriage should be allowed to still compete. :thanks

Hey now... I am a huge fan of the Danish Women's Curling Team.

What blasphemy! Go Scotland! The country that invented it and gave meaning to the expression 'The Beautiful Sweeping'.

that is stupid and not a correct analogy. Gays are not banned from competing. They apparently will be cited if they engage in certain behavior. IT would be akin to Christian athletes being told they could not engage in a Christian celebration while in Russia.

so you would be O.K. with that then ... O.K. ...

With all the controversy around a new Russian law against homosexual "propaganda", some are calling for the US to boycott the 2014 winter Olympics in Russia. I don't think we should because it just punishes the athletes that have been training and preparing their whole lives.

What do you think?

No Olympics should ever be boycotted, regardless of where they are being held!

In the first place you are depriving athletes who have worked their asses off to get a chance to represent their country and earn a medal for themselves and the USA. When you boycott they may lose their chance to some new, young up and comer four years down the road and never get the opportunity they worked for.

In the second place, it's our chance to show up the country we are having a dispute with. Historical example? The Berlin Olympics in Nazi Germany.

Finally, participation in the Olympics is an honor not to be tossed aside lightly, as in used as a political coin to embarass a country. Only ends up making us look like idiots to the rest of the world.

I see this occurrence as a complete disgrace. How did a stadium full of germans doing the hitler salute contribute anything positive to anything? Sometimes principals are more important than a goddamn track and field contest, but even by that measure, Germany won the most medals that year. The olympics did not take place in 1940 or 1944 because, oh yeah, some asshole who gave the opening speech in Berlin started a world war. Jews in particular were already being treated abhorrently, and taking part in the olympics made the world complicit.

I do want to update this though so some may reconsider their earlier opinions. Mine continues to be that they should move the olympics or ban team russia. I see this as no different from the gestapo. In fact, many of the thugs are 'neo nazis' and murders, with no legal repercussions, continue to take place.

Should we boycott? Hell no. Where is the respect for other culture's values?

There's no reason to respect the disrespectful. If they burned witches, we'd probably have to pass on that as well.

some folks just don't understand what it is to be part of a team ... oh well ...

educate me on how many teams you have been on

I have represented this nation on 5 teams in three different sports.

that's a bit hysterically hyperbolic isn't it?

what do you think would happen in an Islamist nation if two gay guys started playing tonsil hockey in public?

It's an analogy. And Muslims are not big on homosexuality but I'm not big on that part of Islam, or Christianity, or Judaism, etc.

too numerous to count ... played semi-pro ball, baseball scholarship to college, three letters in high school, etc., etc. ... BUT tell me, did you ever play with guys who didn't know what it was to be part of a team? Many of Jackie Robinson's teammates didn't want him on the team, but in the end stood by and stood up for him.

TD ... you keep missing the point ... a team is a team is a team ... if you want to make distinctions between olympic and other teams, knock yourself out ... I don't ... When they stop counting medals by countries, which, btw, I wish they would, then I may start thinking of the Olympic Team as something other than a team ... gotta go, catch up with you later ... congrats on your athletic exploits - impressive ... :applaud

you are missing the point. If the athletes want to not go because they want the few gays on their team to be able to engage in PDA, that's fine

what is not fine is a pimp in office telling people who trained for years they cannot go so that pimp can pander to a few who cannot keep it in their pants

TD, not only are all black men not pimps, the vast majority of them (well over 99%) are not. And in case you were wondering, the vast majority of black women (well over 99%) are not prostitutes.
