Simple question. Do you believe Al Jazeera is a reliable source of information or is it unreliable?

Compared to the American media, absolutely. Objectively, they are obviously biased on issues regarding the Middle East but offer far more coverage as well.

I haven't seen or read much of Al Jazeera myself to know if it's reliable, but I hear good things about it.

it is as reliable as CNN if l am not wrong

but l voted" l loveyou jred "

I'd say AJ is equally as reliable as most other major news sources.

Reliable is probably not the best descriptor though is it?

I can rely on some news sources to be quite biased in their reporting.

Are you asking if AJ is a credible news source? Are you asking about their "lean" or bias?

A known habitual liar is reliable. Right?

I'm pretty sure there are elements of bias like anything else but there as good as anything else mainstream.

They're no Russia Today for example, where every issue is somehow linked to the US, neoliberalism and Western imperialism.

because neoliberalism is a movement that advocates globalism

Aljazzeera covers a wide array of news.

If I have to guess, I say they are reliable in some areas, less so in others.

I voted for "no" because by defacto, I assumed it was about coverage of stuff that happens in the ME.
If you want to know whether it's reliable regarding american politics... more so than the american mainstream media I think. Especially more reliable than Fox, NBC or MSNBC.

Without doing a lot of research, I"m going to stick my neck out and say that the truth of what it broadcasts is equal to that of Fox News.

I was thinking something similar.

I was going to add that it is more in-depth and less dumbed down than the typical fox stuff, but in similar territory otherwise -- at least the westernized version. The Arabic version tells a different story.

Al Jazeera is a reliable source of news.

Fox News is the GOP's Propaganda Department.

"Better days are coming." ~ But not for today's out of touch, running out of time, GOP.

I wonder if that surprises anyone.

It doesn't surprise me

Al Jazeera's international standing has been waning in the past few years. They've been criticized as being overtly sympathetic to their Arab brethren, especially since the Arab Spring. For example, they've been criticized for focusing only on the atrocities committed by Assad in the Syrian conflict with largely no coverage of those committed by the opposition. These criticisms have come to head since the ousting of Morsi a few weeks ago with the moderates and liberals accusing Al Jazeera of being a propaganda machine for the MB.

I'd say 85% of the time they are very reliable. The problem crops up when they take on stories from the Gulf, and when you compare the Arabic language version to the English language version. For example Al-Jazeera heavily self-censored it's coverage of the uprising in Bahrain and the protests in Saudi Arabia and Oman to put it lightly. This was highly visible when you look at their different language programs. The general rule is that the English language version is more reliable and sanitized, the Arabic version when it concerns regional issues has more editorialization and self-censorship.

Heh. Russia Today is barely a news station. It's useful only when you are in Asia/Africa and need an English language station (they always seem to be carried there) and/or you want to know what the narrative of the day is out of Russia. It's become progressively crazier and more conspiratorial as it's failed to penetrate Western media markets, catering more to the developing world where it's message is usually easily received.

I was in the Middle East when Morsi was ousted and watching Al-Jazeera in a cafe. Morsi supporters (very few in the country I was in) watched France-24, opponents watched Al-Jazeera on dueling tv's. Though it was a fairly liberal establishment.

I think Al-jazeera is just as unreliable as any other modern news source. They inform an audiance that want's to hear a particular line of news. They don't often get caught in a lie, but they are quite capable of turning a blind eye on news they don't "approve" of.

I think it might be reliable for giving unwitting indicators over future terrorist attacks.
