- Their founding documents have become the benchmark for all countries on earth that desire freedom and government at the consent of the governed.

That part is a lie but otherwise your good.

I think most of them would be shocked to see that what they started still exists. That's only if you could get them away from looking at cars or staring at a plane in the sky.

George Washington warned about a two party government when he stepped down after his second term, he believed that it would be the downfall of a successful governing body to have polarized politics. Looks like he was about spot on.

Personally I think we are worse now than we were 50 years ago. We are in decline.

I'm sorry you feel that way.
I was a young lad fifty years ago,and for me and my parents, life in America wasn't all that great for us back then.
I am very grateful that in the last 50 years, this dark skin creole child of a porter and house keeper has been allowed, through my hard work,to rise up in the restaurant business to become an owner of a mid-size (and growing) culinary management company that owns several restaurants, catering, banquet halls, bars and nightclubs, and employs several hundred people of different colors, ethnicity, beliefs etc.

I am thankful that I live in a country that allows me to own a business that caters to people of all colors, races, ethnicity, etc, and not just,"for colored people only".

I am thankful I live in a country that has allowed me to become prosperous and wealthy due to my own hard work, and not held back because of the color of my skin.

I am thankful that I live in a country that has allowed me to be able to own and live in a very nice house in a very nice neighborhood that wasn't designated "for colored people only".

I am thankful that I live in a country that has allowed me to be able to send my dark skinned daughters to the very best schools I can afford that wasn't designated "for colored people only".

I am thankful that I live in a country that has allowed me to meet, fall in love, and marry a wonderful Caucasian woman with being "Emmet Tilled" because of it.

I am thankful that I live in a country that allows me the freedoms that my parents were denied and fought for.

If you feel you are worse off than you were (or could have been) 50 years ago,I'm sorry to hear that.
I for one have absolutely no desire at all to go back to the way things were 50 years ago.

Black rights are only one issue. And that is one where we are better off today, well maybe, depends how you see the Zimmerman Trial.

Black rights are only one issue. And that is one where we are better off today, well maybe, depends how you see the Zimmerman Trial.

Me being black had nothing to do with the successes (and failures) I have had in the past 50 years.
It has to do with the choices I made in how to handle " the cards life has dealt me".

I didn't follow the Zimmerman trial, nor do I give a crap about it.It had nothing to do with me.
I was too busy trying to run my company and business ventures and trying to make it grow and prosper.
I was too busy trying to make sure that my employees were rewarded for the hard work they put in in these troubled economic times and continue to have a place to make a living at.
I was to busy trying to please my customers and serve their needs so that they can continue to be valued customers and recommend me to new ones.
I was more concerned with how to be a good husband to my wife,a father to my daughters, and a good grandpa to my grandchildren.

Maybe if more people in this country were more concerned with what is going own in their own lives first, and the things that truly effect their lives, and less concerned with things like the Zimmerman trial, what the Kardassians are up to,what gay people are doing, who's marrying who, what that woman over there is doing with her womb, etc, maybe, just maybe, this country wouldn't be in such decline.

I highly disagree, a lot of those things, such as abortion, homosexuality, are the reasons we are in decline.

71% Of Americans Believe The Founding Fathers Would Be Disappointed At The Way The Nation Has Turned Out | Techdirt

I would be among the 71%. If you look at us now and compare us to the past we have become a lazy, arrogant, and stupid people. And the goverment has done many things that are unconstitutional (ex secret laws). Do you think they would be dissaponted in us, and is so why?

They'd probably be disappointed that slavery had been abolished, and horrified to find black people and women could actually vote.

Jefferson and Franklin would be staring at the good looking women.
I think most of them would be shocked to see that what they started still exists. That's only if you could get them away from looking at cars or staring at a plane in the sky.

That's your opinion, thank you for sharing.

What is this "we" thing you speak of?
I'm not in decline, other than what goes with on naturally through aging (I'm no spring chicken).

I don't know about anyone else,but I'm doing great.I'm healthy,I have a wonderful family,and I am doing well financially.
I see that my neighbors seem to be doing quite well for themselves every time we all get together for a b-b-q.

None of my family has ever had an abortion (that I know of).
And homosexuality is a non-issue in the Verthaine household.

If homosexuality and abortion is effecting your life or anyone else's,I'm sorry to hear that, but that really isn't my problem, now is it?

What effects my life is what people want to eat, can they pay for it,and can I supply that food to them at a profit, and can I make them satisfied enough to use use my services again..
What effects my life is the welfare of my family and my business.
Like I said,if more people paid more attention to what is going on in their own lives (and the things that truly effect them),instead of " what that other person is doing that has absolutely no effect on their lives",maybe this country wouldn't be in decline.

We as a nation.

George Washington warned about a two party government when he stepped down after his second term, he believed that it would be the downfall of a successful governing body to have polarized politics. Looks like he was about spot on.

They created the two party system. When we moved down to a one party government after the War of 1812, it created more problems. The nation purely voted on a regional basis, no one had a national message or wide national support. After that decade, we had the two-party system from then on.

I don't know why people keep pulling out this idea.

If this nation is in decline as you say it is,what do you want me to do about it?

Cook us some of your gumbo, read us some good stories, and tuck us in would be nice, though I prefer that my feet stick out from under the covers if you do and I prefer my gumbo without crawdads in it :)

Sure,no problem.

Gumbo (see server)-$13.95.
Storytelling-$12,000.
Tucking in -$2,000,000.
(all taxes will be applicable).
Will that be cash, check or credit?

Credit card. Since the world is collapsing, I won't ever have to pay it back anyways.

They would look at our world wide power, our wealth, our success, our standard of living, our expansion of freedom in the society... and I do believe they would be astounded and very pleased.

As if it mattered since they all have been gone for the past two centuries give or take.

That's only a very recent development, over the past dozen years, and I believe the pendulum will swing back in the not to distant future while maintaining a sufficient level of security scrutiny. Whether or not you agree with what Snowden did, or how he did it, one has to thank him for bringing the issue to the forefront and making it a topic of discussion going forward. It sounds like there's bipartisan support in congress for new legislation or changes to the Patriot Act that will rein in what is seen as monitoring abuse, and that's a good thing.

 no, dude. This is in no way limited to the Patriot Act.

consider, for example, the charges of the Anti-Federalist, Brutus:

...This power, exercised without limitation, will introduce itself into every corner of the city, and country-it will wait upon the ladies at their toilet, and will not leave them in any of their domestic concerns; it will accompany them to the ball, the play, and assembly; it will go with them when they visit, and will, on all occasions, sit beside them in their carriages, nor will it desert them even at church; it will enter the house of every gentleman, watch over his cellar, wait upon his cook in the kitchen, follow the servants into the parlor, preside over the table, and note down all he eats or drinks; it will attend him to his bedchamber, and watch him while he sleeps; it will take cognizance of the professional man in his office, or his study; it will watch the merchant in the counting-house, or in his store; it will follow the mechanic to his shop, and in his work, and will haunt him in his family, and in his bed; it will be a constant companion of the industrious farmer in all his labor, it will be with him in the house, and in the field, observe the toil of his hands, and the sweat of his brow; it will penetrate into the most obscure cottage; and finally, it will light upon the head of every person in the United States. To all these different classes of people, and in all these circumstances, in which it will attend them, the language in which it will address them, will be GIVE! GIVE! A power that has such latitude, which reaches every person in the community in every conceivable circumstance, and lays hold of every species of property they possess, and which has no bounds set to it, but the discretion of those who exercise it-I say, such a power must necessarily, from its very nature, swallow up all the power of the state governments. I shall add but one other observation on this head, which is this: It appears to me a solecism, for two men, or bodies of men, to have unlimited power respecting the same object. It contradicts the ... maxim, which saith, "no man can serve two masters," the one power or the other must prevail, or else they will destroy each other, and neither of them effect their purpose. It may be compared to two mechanic powers, acting upon the same body in opposite directions, the consequence would be, if the powers were equal, the body would remain in a state of rest, or if the force of the one was superior to that of the other, the stronger would prevail, and overcome the resistance of the weaker. But it is said, by some of the advocates of this system, that "the idea that Congress can levy taxes at pleasure is false, and the suggestion wholly unsupported. The preamble to the constitution is declaratory of the purposes of the [our] union, and the assumption of any power not necessary to establish justice, etc., provide for the common defense, etc., will be unconstitutional....

Now, are you going to tell me he didn't turn out to be rather prescient?

Not a problem. The world may be collapsing, but the wealthy and powerful seems to be in a good position not only to not only survive it,but possibly prosper from it.

In practically every empire that ever existed, somebody (whether it was from within or outside the empire) had to come out ahead over everyone else
Or at least had a good escape plan..and have someone else pay the bill.

Fine. Since I left my feet sticking out from the safety of the blankets you can whack them off and make gumbo out of them and we can call it even :)

Society is fine. There is an ebb and flow to all this, and people have been dooming and glooming for as long as recorded history.
