Perhaps we should just take an idea from the Scandanavian countries you liberals love so much and just start severely restricting immigrantion?

If I'm not mistaken, it's one of the reasons the Scandinavian countries didn't join the EU - and why many countries that did rue the day they agreed to accept as residents anyone who holds a valid passport for one of the EU countries - some are being inundated with radical muslims holding French passports from Northern Africa.

On the other hand, it seems quite likely the only reason Democrats have been pandering to the illegal alien crowd is solely for the purpose you have claimed. For the votes.
Though most liberal Dem leaders are rousing the rabble with ideological messages for the purppose of exhorting the rank-and-file to push this amnesty and legalization bill for the Dem leaders' power-play agenda ..

.. There are quite a number of liberal Dems who actually succumb ideologically and are thus compelled as "the right thing to do" in support of amnesty and legalization for 20 million illegals at the injustice expense of millions of their fellow American citizens and the entire American citizenry.

This is a very, very sad commentary on what it means to be a liberal Democrat.

Plus, Obama wants the Stipulation concerning Civil unions to be placed into the package. Schumer, McCain, we should have them taken out of this equation. All due to costs.

WASHINGTON (AP) — To some conservatives, it's amnesty.

To some immigration advocates, it's unnecessarily punitive.

The Senate's new bipartisan immigration bill drew criticism from the right and from the left Tuesday — convincing members of the bipartisan "Gang of Eight" that wrote it that they're on the right track.

"This has something for everybody to hate," said Sen. Jeff Flake, R-Ariz.

Said Sen. Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y., "No one gets everything they want."

Schumer and another leader of the effort, Sen. John McCain, R-Ariz., met with President Barack Obama on Tuesday to brief him on the bill, a top second-term priority for the president. Obama issued a statement after the meeting supporting the Senate effort and urging action.

"This bill is clearly a compromise, and no one will get everything they wanted, including me. But it is largely consistent with the principles that I have repeatedly laid out for comprehensive reform," Obama said. "I urge the Senate to quickly move this bill forward and, as I told Sens. Schumer and McCain, I stand willing to do whatever it takes to make sure that comprehensive immigration reform becomes a reality as soon as possible."

The legislation would dramatically remake the U.S. immigration system, ushering in new visa programs for low- and high-skilled workers, requiring a tough new focus on border security, instituting a new requirement for all employers to check the legal status of their workers, and installing a path to citizenship for 11 million immigrants in the country illegally.....snip~

6.3 trillion plus costs. Which there is no tally on the costs.

Heya JR :2wave: .....and that's another part of the Workers permits and Visas for Alleged Skilled Techs and Engineers. Same thing for Student Visas.

Which for some reason all want to increase those numbers. What I don't understand is this new add on about taking in more unskilled laborers. That just doesn't make sense at all.
One of the reasons for supporting illegal immigration and looser visa standards is to undermine the wages of American workers.People on lower wages tend to be dependent on the state.

I will never support any bill that grants amnesty to illegal criminals, period. It's one thing to require them to go through the same process as other legal immigrants, I might even support them staying in the country during the process, and certainly we need to streamline the process so that it doesn't take as long, but to just give people a free pass because they crawled over a fence or swam across a river is stupid. We ought to fine them extra, in addition to requiring they pay all back taxes owed, before letting them stay anyhow. Criminal behavior for *ANY* reason ought not be rewarded.

Exactly.

The safety and welfare of American citizens must be the first priority. I'm not sure those in non-border states appreciate fully how porous the border is and how dangerous it can be for American citizens in their own cities and towns. The border must be secured.

The criminals must be sent back home. Some are not just here illegally; they're here committing crimes. Many are overcrowding hospitals by giving birth to "anchor babies." Diseases once eradicated in this country, including TB, are back in resistant forms.

Those who are here illegally have to go, and if they want to become citizens, they have to begin at the back of the line and go through the process fair and square.

Yeah that's a given.....but I am tired of the excuse that Americans don't want jobs. Or that we don't have Engineers and Professionals that can be employed. They need to start looking at getting these kids out working too.

I live in Chicago and even to get to those kids and get them out of banging and doing nothing. I would offer seasonal jobs, even in other states. Even if they have to put them up in some dorm like facility. It would be cheaper than just bringing in people who will be as you say taking jobs from Americans. It gets them out of these ghettos and gang/drug infested neighborhoods. ( that's like looking at jobs in the agro sector ) Gets them making money and working. Hopefully letting them make that decision to avoid as much of the negativity as they possibly can. Summer jobs or Winter even. 3 months or more.

Of course it is not thee answer. But we need to start getting thru to the youth of America. About working for what they want in life, and not looking towards any government to hand it to them. Which they will have to be taught and reminded that they need to save for the future. For themselves.

I heard a commercial on the radio the other day that discussed the immigration bill and applauded the conservatives for "moving the country forward" by approving of this bill. How many conservatives here on DP are for this bill?

The bill is terribly flawed and should be rejected.

I support immigration reform, but not the Gang of 8. I think I agree with Rand Paul thoroughly on immigration.

It's progress I suppose.

The legal path to citizenship is demanding enough and makes legal people out of otherwise illegal people. I like the idea of more border guards and fences.

I like the idea of putting the border guards and fence up first.

There is much about this bill I do not know, however.

I mean, the illegals are here. Something should be done to make things right on many fronts. I do not have the answers myself. I wish I did.

My question is, if the illegals had no qualms about breaking immigration laws in the past, why would they care now? Will this bill actually do what it is meant to do or is it just another Big Brother expenditure to appease the masses? Is there any teeth to the violators of the bill once enacted?
