In a recent poll by Fox News, 85% of American's support medical marijuana:

http://www.foxnews.com/politics/int...ll-85-percent-voters-favor-medical-marijuana/

And 52 % of American's support the legalization and taxation of marijuana:

Survey: 52 percent of Americans in favor of legalizing marijuana - U.S. News

I am sure this poll has happened before on this website, but not for a little while and I wanted to get an overall view of how people felt about this topic. I recently read a topic on the legalization of prostitution which is a topic I don't really have an opinion of.

Anyways, I was recently in Amsterdam since I am studying abroad and I wanted to try their "coffee". I avoided the red light district but I asked a few of the locals what they thought of both subjects and what they thought of the tons of tourists that seemingly carry both industries. With my very disjointed Dutch I found that a lot of people supported both, but they thought that the tourists were annoying in every aspect of Amsterdam except for the coffeeshop owners and others who profit from the tourist industry.

They said it was more of a necessary evil that really helped their local economy.

With America being next in line to start wide-spread legalization (Colorado, Washington) and the profits that these states will probably produce from taxes and tourism, do you hope that your state follow suite?

I want the Feds to legalize mj & tax the H*** out of it,
like cigarettes only worse. The country needs the money
and legalizing it may cut out some of the cartels bringing it here.:twocents:

I think medical marijuana should be a completely different topic. I have seen it make a big differenece with patients N/V and anorexia, there are many studies that back up the effectiveness of marijuana/THC. It should just be handled as another drug.

I think pot should otherwise be legal and taxed.

Now lets not get crazy here, a reasonable tax is fair enough. :)

And I support full legalization.

I think these are two entirely separate questions and I think a lot of people support or oppose the idea of medical marijuana solely because they think it will make recreational marijuana easier to get and/or is a step on the path to it being legalised in general.

On the medical side, I see no reason why marijuana shouldn't be treated like any other pharmaceutical, practically and legally. It certainly does have medical uses but it also has side-effects and risks. They all need to be properly considered and accounted for without influence from the recreational debate at all.

Recreationally, I could really go either way. I don't think legalisation will necessarily create any better a situation as we have now - it would just swap one set of problems with another. I could see some forms of decriminalisation of use as a positive step, though that should be as part of a wider policy.

I support both legal and medical use.....As Willie Nelson says. Best Stress medicine in the World other than a Cat sitting on ya Chest and purrin away.

Moreover I to have seen Cancer patients that were in Pain until they started smoking medical marijuana. Then the pain wasn't affecting them as intensely.

I do not approve of marijuana usage in any form. I see no benefit to it that cannot be produced through other means. Even as a glaucoma patent who has had prior surgeries for my issues, I would not use it even if it were offered to me. If I were to contract Cancer I would not use it either.

There is no good justification for it being illegal in any context, unless you're a socialist worried about something so easy to grow and therefore difficult to tax.

As much as I'm in favor of legalization, if it's legal to grow it (which it should be) then the people who make big claims about the tax potential are going to need to rethink their estimates. Current prices are massively inflated due to decades of prohibition, and those prices will have to drop substantially if they want to compete with people growing their own, or continuing black market trade.

I support it being legal for medicinal and recreational use.For recreational usage it should be treated no different than alcohol or cigarettes minus the sin taxes like regulation on where you can and can't smoke and DWI laws. For medicinal use it should be treated like over the counter medicine but still need ID to purchase and in some cases prescription medicine that insurance will or can pay for.

legalize it and sell it to adults. if the person wants to use it in a recreational or medical way, cool.

Would you use prescription narcotics if prescribed?

I'm sorry to read this because I've seen for myself how very helpful marijuana is for those with cancer and also those who are dying.

I don't support legalization; I support decriminalization.

As far as I know, they attempted to counter the influx of drug tourists with a new law that requires a membership card for marihuana/hash "coffee shops" only people with a Dutch citizenship are allowed to get.

Anyway, I'm strongly in favor of medical use of marihuana (all drugs in general -- when a doctor thinks it is useful as a med, and if just in controlled withdrawal, I think he should be able to prescribe it).

Although I sometimes used marihuana/hash several years ago, I'm not really fond of private marihuana use, much like I think alcohol use is usually not a good thing -- but it shouldn't be illegal. Simply because there are more disadvantages to it being illegal, than there are to legalizing it (black markets, unhealthy fillers, crime and so on).

At the very least, private cultivation should be decriminalized. I would love to see marijuana literally become a cottage industry, only local growers providing to local buyers, and many if not most people growing for themselves to share for free with their friends, like you would tomatoes and fruits, peppers, etc.

I can't vote in this one due to my choice not being present. I would be for it only under certain circumstances. I am for Medical Marijuana as I see it as just another drug in the arsenal to help dying patients have a little better life. I would be for recreational marijuana if it was treated the same as liquor. DUI, DWI, work related, Etc. Tax it just like Liquor, and of course age restrictions. But in exchange for legalizing it, we stop taxpayer funded drug rehab, including Alchahol rehab. My feeling is if your gonna use the stuff you get to pay the bill if you develop an issue. Shouldn't be on the taxpayer to bail you out. Additionally we stop paying drunks and druggies SSI to sit at home and get messed up all day.

Don't they make THC in pill form. That covers the Medical needs. I've never been able to understand why someone needs drugs to have a life. Can someone explain to me why they need drugs? And to stop the ever ready "But Booze" I include Alcohol in the same category as drugs.

Would you use prescription narcotics if prescribed?

I've had them prescribed as pain medication after surgeries and injuries. In general, if they even get filled, most of the prescription gets flushed down the toilet after the fact. I go out of my way to avoid that sort of medication unless I'm under direct medical supervision.

I don't support either and live in a state that has decriminalized it and now allows it for medicinal purposes.

My father declined any and all THC derived therapies while he was dying of cancer.

OK, but do you care if other people want to use it (medically or otherwise)? If so, why?

If you tax the hell out of it, it won't slow down the import of illegal drugs that can undercut the cost of the legal stuff. That makes no sense.

I am against the legalization of any illicit drug, in fact, if I had my way, I wouldn't want tobacco or alcohol legal either. If you have to ingest, inject, smoke or snort any substance to feel good about yourself, you've got some issues. That said, I think the way most states that have legalized medical marijuana have gone about it is the most piss-poor method imaginable, we all know that people are forging prescriptions or just buying it illegally out the back door of dispensaries and it's being ignored by the authorities. If we're going to allow it, it has to be much, much, much better controlled.

I do not believe it should be available. I have such little faith in my fellow men and women that I am not comfortable with people having it available to them.

Well, I don't see how it can be any worse than trusting them with guns, 2-ton machines that move at 70+MPH, your bank account info or your waiter every time you give him your credit card. Or finally, for that matter, the leader of every country with nuclear missiles. Compared to those I'd say medical marijuana is downright Disney friendly.

What if I just like the taste of beer, and I enjoy the effects of alcohol? I don't need the alcohol, but it's enjoyable and I'm not harming anyone.

I DON'T trust most people in those situations either, Cardinal.

My problem with marijuana in general is the same issue I have with narcotics, alcohol, and other substances..... They create an altered mental state which inhibits people's ability to make sound decisions instantly.
