Would you have an issue with a valedictorian reading the Call to Prayer

A question for Conservatives.

If a Valedictorian in a south carolina school decided to rip up their speech and instead read the islamic Call to Prayer, would you have an issue with that? If so, what would the reason for your taking issue with it?

Because wouldn't it be awful if a Muslim student wished the best for his classmates?

Funny that few or none are addressing the question put forth by the OP. Maybe it was the poll itself that confused participants.

I already addressed it.

I notice, however, that you have not addressed the OP anywhere previously in the thread and this post certainly does not address it.

So... you figured you'd just jump in to moan about folks not addressing the OP, even though some of us have, while doing the same thing (not addressing the OP) that you're here to bitch about?

How about you stop running around trying to play junior assistant moderator and only ending up putting your foot in your mouth?

Either that or sit quietly in the corner and drink a nice hot mug of STFU?

Thanks, and you have the best day ever.

Spoken like a true Junior Assistant Moderator.

As long as the speaker was known to be a peaceful person I would have no issue with him reciting a prayer from his practicing religion. Doesn't mean I have to recite the prayer with him or believe in it. He is up there because of his accomplishments, and if that is how he feels his time is best spent then so be it. I would expect all religions to be given the same treatment though. There is room for them all in this country. If an atheist would like to speak about why they don't believe in god then it's there time let them go ahead.

Sriously though, all your childishness aside, what are your thoughts on the OP?

Have you even thought about it?

So if an atheist valedictorian talked about his non belief and how god doesn't exist, do you think he would be called a hero and invited on Fox news?

Highly unlikely since the story doesn't fit their agenda. Same as a Christian Valedictorian likely won't get invited to MSNBC for doing the same thing. I don't believe either one should be considered a hero for simply practicing their religion.

Do you think what he did was "practicing his religion"?

If he was living in an atheist majority country in an even stronger atheist majority state where most of his fellow classmates were atheists and would strongly relate to the speech and if he was told he could not speak about his atheism at all because not everyone was an atheist and a few religious people might be upset over it then it may have also been a semi-notable event that would get him/her an invite to msnbc.

Yes I believe he was practicing his religion. I also think that it is part of what he truly believes in. So much so that he wanted to let others know his religious beliefs helped guide him to Valedictorian.

But it has nothing to do with the topic.

It does, however, have everything to do with reality. The fact is, this isn't a free speech issue, it's yet another case for the right wing (which switches off with the left wing on alternate weeks) to do something absurdly hypocritical and make themselves look stupid.

Hmm, not sure that is what is going on at all here.

I have long thought that open of the most bizarre creations of the far wrong is the idea that the First Amendment requires the suppression and censorship of religious expression in certain contexts; essentially turning the First Amendment into an excuse for the very sort of censorship that it was intended to prohibit, and in instrument for the suppression and violation of the very rights that it was intended to protect.

There are quite a few Muslims among my coworkers, and at the appropriate times of each day, a small group of them assemble in a corner to say pray in the manner that their faith dictates. They often do this in full view and within full earshot of me. Some may find this difficult to believe, but even though I am not a Muslim, I have not been in any way harmed, nor had my rights violated in any way, by being exposed to this ritual.

You don't think this is becoming a rallying point for those of a particular religious and political bent? It happens every couple of years, some situation like this, and all of the radical right wing nutcases hold hands and sing kumbayah around it before it fades away. The left-wing loonies do the same thing with their own similar situations.

Yeah, not what is going on here at all. We are talking about the Constitutional rights of Americans.

Which I have agreed with, that doesn't mean that it was a good idea what he did. There are plenty of things that one could do that are Constitutionally guaranteed that are just stupid ideas.

David, you must have missed my response ^^^ earlier today and a similar post to a similar statement you made regarding the same issue on another thread.

Christians are constantly being told that we should keep to ourselves. We are constantly being told to separate church and state. We are constantly being told that religion has no place in politics.

What do you mean? Be specific and please give comparative examples regarding other religions. If you are tired of it, it must happen a lot. Other religions must be getting a great deal more favoritism by something or somebody and it must be happening quite a bit. Who and how and how often?

We are told we can't pray, we are told we can't preach, we are told people shouldn't have to hear us. None of that is in the Constitution.

You haven't been put on any lion's brunch menu, which is all the "freedom " you deserve................................

Glad you can be mature about this....

I'm just reminding you where Christians have come from. Something they seem to have forgotten.................Convienently...................

Are you referring to Daniel? Daniel wasn't a Christian, he was a Jew. There was no such thing as a Christian seeing as how Christ had not yet come.
