So obama's treasury dept. gave the OK for this star couple to go to Cuba on the grounds that it encouraged "meaningful contact" with the Cuban people. I know the Rodman trip to NK has worked out great so I'm sure this will too. What I am wondering though is did this little Cuban vacation help the US and democracy or did it help Cuba and communism-fascism.

"The mystery of whether Beyonce and Jay-Z's wedding anniversary trip to Cuba was legal has been solved. The Treasury Department says the power couple's trip to Cuba was authorized under a licensed program that encourages "meaningful contacts" with the Cuban people. The acknowledgment was made in Treasury Department letters sent Tuesday to Rep. Mario Diaz-Balart and Ileana Ros-Lehtinen, Republican Florida lawmakers who had asked the department if the trip had violated the embargo against Cuba and was licensed. A copy of the letter to Diaz-Balart was obtained by ABC News, Rep. Ros-Lehtinen's office released a copy of the letter sent to her."

I am disappointed

Cuba is gradually liberalising. This can only hasten the process, however slightly.

What a subtle way Obama has of toppling the Cuban government.

Export some crappy music in hopes the people will become so agitated they overthrow the regime.

I have a friend who just got back from Cuba on a cultural exchange trip and loved it - the music, the people, the culture...Obviously, not the government.

It's time to give up on this ridiculous embargo. It's been so successful that the regime is still in power nearly 50 years later.

I guarantee you if it became an American tourist destination again, the regime could not conceivably last much longer under pressure for modernization.

IMO Just goes to show,

It's not what you know,It's who you know!!

This disgusts me simply because an average

working slob could never get permission for this trip!!:rantoff:

Nothing will change between the U.S.A. and Cuba's, relationship!:peace

Embargos work so well! We put one on Cuba and....oh...Well, there's the one on Iran...oh they're still in charge too...North Korea.....

Somebody help me out here.

I see it just as a quid-pro-quo for campaign fundraising the entertainment couple did on behalf of Obama and Democrats - celebrity couples being out of the country, and not here in Canada, preaching to others, not us, can't be a bad thing. Why not send Obama to Cuba - they have golf courses, don't they?

To answer the question, I don't really care.

Or better yet:

I got 99 problems, but Jazy-zandbeyoncevisitinganislandthatwehavehadanembargoonforgodknowshowlongianotthatseriousofasituationandinfactmayactuallybenefitcubanamericanrelationshipsatleastonapersonallevel ain't one.

It was legal.

In my humble opinion by virtue of the fact Beyonce and Jay-Z and American cultural icons who engaged in cultural outreach while in Cuba I think was it qualifies as a legitimate Treasury Department authorization. I think the more efforts can be made to get the people of other countries to embrace Americans, especially countries we are at odds with at some level, it helps foster good will toward us and helps create a "pro-America" global culture. This is IMHO good for America even if the results are not always seen immediately.

BTW: The embargo against Cuba is something supported by the Cuban-American exile community; an effort to bring the communist regime to its knees economically and help usher in a democratic style regime change. Guess what has been reported as Cuba's number one industry at one time? Hope you're sitting. Cuban-American exiles wiring money via Western Union to the family in Cuba they've left behind. I'd love to see democratic reform in Cuba but IMHO we have an inconsistent policy when we turn a blind eye to places like Saudi Arabia and China but apply special no-trade rules to Cuba. However my educated guess is more people in this country are less concerned about the merits or lack of merits of the Cuban embargo and more concerned about maybe this Jay-Z Beyonce trip might have afforded an opportunity to bash Obama that needs to be maximized.

Actually, if you look at it closely, the embargoes on North Korea had little effect originally because it only harmed the little people - when they started to embargo luxury goods and fancy cars, Kim Jong-un sat up and took notice and he's suddenly quite bellicose and threatening - now they're hurting where it counts. With Iran, the embargoes are working because they have severely undermined any power Ahmadinejad still had in the regime - the people hate him and even the Ayatollahs are about to throw him under the bus - they don't like their dirty work coming under so much overt scrutiny.

Cuba, however, is much different in that its regime is harmless and its people love America and American culture and their communist friends are fading away, including Chavez recently, so the time may be ripe for opening up relations between the two countries - Canada's relationship with Cuba and their people has not harmed us in any way.

I just think it's a shame they didn't stay there.

I'm not for the embargo in and of itself but if you have one and then let so called stars like this visit anyway you do more harm than good.

I have a friend who's been there several times on church mission trips. There are faith-based, educational and cultural exemptions to the Cuban travel embargo.

You should write the radical right republicans who cater to the Cuban exile crowd in Congress/Florida. They scream a red streak at even the thought of relaxing the restrictions. The average slob can't go because the right wing slobs in Congress refuse to go along with that.

it is high time we drop the pretense of the restrictions have any positive effect. :peace

Isn't quite easy for an American to visit Cuba?

Don't the immigration officers just not stamp your passport and wave you on? Or so I heard from some Americans.

Going there this Summer. Can't wait. So option 3 it is.
