This is pretty much what I'd do too. Wait until he's distracted or something and then shoot him. Realistically, it might mean waiting until he starts raping her to do anything, which would be very difficult. But I can't do much to protect her if I'm dead.

First off it may not be useless, she may make her escape while the would be rapist is busy killing me. Secondly as I said I wouldn't be able to live with myself if I did nothing so either way she would be without me.
 
It's easy enough to theorize what you'd do...but some people have been in dicey situations in which they had to react and do know how they reacted in those situations. I do. Got the snot beaten out of me too, but I didn't think--I acted. No time to ponder. If you're instinct is to just stand there and do nothing or to run away, well, that's your instinct.

The sensible rapist would disable the man first and then go after the woman.

I would assess the situation and see what paths to victory I was able to take, without regard to self preservation. Needlessly sacrificing one's self is stupid, but one should also not wimp out.

I love how all these people who have never seen any kind of armed conflict/combat are so eager to throw their lives away in a useless gesture that would only cause more pain to their loved one.

Pretty sure that standing aside while it happens would be impossible for me anyway, Goshin-brain no workee in this manner.

dude, he has a gun. it would take him all of 2 seconds to kill you. and then he'd realize that he's already committed one murder so he is going to kill your wife after he rapes her.

what's "right" is to do what's best for the long term survival/benefit of those you love. getting yourself killed (and most likely causing your spouse to be killed) just to keep yourself from feeling guilty because you didn't play the hero is not only stupid...it's selfish

Hell, I used to throw myself into harm's way for strangers on a regular basis... I'd hardly hesitate to do the same for a loved one. Just make sure it isn't "useless".

yeah, two combat tours in Iraq here. had my fair share of being in harms way. that's why I can tell you that if you are unarmed and the other guy has a gun, chances are almost 100% that anything you try is going to result in your swift demise

It would take less time than that to pull the trigger but "kill you" is up for grabs in such circumstances.

You would be surprised how a man can put up a fight for a brief period even when he has been shot, especially if he was full of adrenalin and fighting for his wifes life. Depending on the caliber of the weapon and where you are shot you still may be able to grab and briefly wrestle your attacker if shot at very close range. During that second or two, she's out the door.

Yeah, probably. Hopefully it's not a situation I'll ever find myself in. Realistically, My wife and I would have started shooting before it ever got to the point of him holding us at gunpoint.

If I found myself confronted with this situation, it wouldn't matter if it were my wife, daughter or the lady down the street, I'm either going to be carried by six or judged by twelve.

Same. A person can do anything they want, don't care, but if they **** with my bread and butter, they're going to have a really bad time.

I've been on the wrong end of guns before. It's bad, but it isn't hopeless if you have the right skills. Buddy of mine took a gun away from a perp one night, unarmed, using methods similar to what I was trained in. It's not a good place to be; it is last-ditch desperation time for sure and not my preferred method of doing things... but it isn't impossible.

Besides, I probably would not be unarmed. :)
