Will you be celebrating "Earth Hour" tonight?

Will you celebrate Earth Hour tonight?

I think “Earth Hour” is one of the dumbest things that the environmentalist-wacko movement has yet come up with.

I do see a degree of poetic appropriateness to it. A bunch of idiots sitting in darkness, symbolic of the darkness of their ignorance and stupidity; and also symbolic of the technological collapse that they would permanently impose on all of us if they truly got their way.

Good evening, Pero.

If I started turning everything off that used electricity around here, my laptop would have to go, and I'm NOT that ready to celebrate anything! Besides, it would probably take till midnight to get everything turned back on, and I'd have to use electricity to light up the place so I could what I was doing, so it would be a wash.

Summertime would be a better time to do this, IMO...at least it doesn't get dark till 9:00....

I think it should be done on the coldest night in winter. Let those who really want to make anything bearing the slightest vestige of a meaningful show of support make some real sacrifice. Spend an hour outside on the coldest night, without any heat or light or anything that uses any artificially-released energy of any kind.

Of course this would never happen, because the sort of cretins who support nonsense like this “Earth Hour” only want to make a meaningless show of support, but are unwilling to make any actual sacrifice or effort.

What an annoying website. First with the annoying pop up thing that I have no reason to read and then the annoying sideways link think thing that apparently only goes away if you click it. Who is the asshat that designed that? It completely amazes me after all these years there is still sites out there that do that crap. I'm here representing a noble cause that I want the entire world to join me in, but first everyone must deal with my asshattery!

What else would you expect? If someone is stupid enough to support such nonsense as this “Earth Hour”, then it stands to reason that such a person would not be intelligent enough to make a useful web site. Stupid begets stupid.

Of all the things in this world, all the horrors, all the wrongs.

To **** all over Earth Day is pretty idiotic.

It's a novel idea and harms no one.

It's not? So the oceans won't rise and destroy entire cities? Someone better tell Al Gore.

Al Gore is entirely unaffiliated with Earth Hour. Keep showing your ignorance though.

The layout is ****ty too. AS much money as WWF has, you would think they could find a competent website designer.

And completely and undeniably affiliated with the "Global Warming/Climate Change" hysteria.

well, i did turn out my lights... but I wasn't aware of it being earth hour.... i do it every night.

there's a certain irony of not being aware that i'm spreading awareness.

Well, I'll be turning out my lights shortly too. I do that every night before bed. :2razz: I am a true environmentalist.

Maybe if you did not repeat his talking points....

Global climate change is not destroying the Earth. Nice try though. Next time, maybe actually read and try to honestly present. It works better.

Oh weird. I watched the official "Earth Hour" video on the website YOU provided and at the end was their little catchline: "Dare the World to Save the Planet" So... either they put that there by accident or you don't know what you're talking about. I vote for the latter.

It's a stupid idea, and helps no one.

It's a step in the right direction, it doesn't effect you, why is it just because you carry the label "Very Conservative" you have to be rabidly against all forms of environmentalism?

It's a step in no direction at all.

I'm not arguing that those who wish to participate in this idiocy don't have every right to do so. Just exercising my own right to point out how stupid an idea it is, and how stupid those are who find anything worthwhile about it.

No because the entire concept is horrifyingly anti-progress. I don't want to turn the power off, I want to make sure as many people on this planet as possible can turn the power on. Donate money for a power plant, and keep your damn television on.

Most conservatives I know practice TRUE environmentalism - recycling, not littering, teaching their kids not to litter, Smokey the Bear wildfire safety, planting trees if you cut them down, etc.

This is the extreme part of environmentalism - the ones who think An Inconvenient Truth is Scripture and that the Earth needs to be "saved" from evil humans.

To celebrate Earth Hour......

Tonight from 8:30 to 9:30 wherever you are on Earth, turn off all devices that use electricity. Because..... if we all do that... the Earth will be saved!

Anyone celebrating?

obviously not, since I just now heard about it, and it's 10:25 here. Besides, screw that, earth gets a whole planet, and now it wants an hour? That's going too far.

That is a misrepresentation of what is actually said.

Alot of anti-Climate Change people always bring up Gore and an Inconvenient Truth and I couldn't give two ****s.

Man Made Climate Change is scientific fact... Period regardless of Al Gore and his stupid movie which I've never even seen... but whatever ones opinions of that are, putting climate change aside, the fact is mankind every day by their actions destroys the planets environment in other ways... Earth Day also draws attention to these things as well.

There is no such thing as "True Environmentalism" for either side of this argument.

All I'm trying to say is, Earth Day is... of all the things in this world, not such a bad thing.

And I don't know why in America there seems to be this idea that there are no good ideas or bad ideas, just liberal ideas and Conservative ideas, and regardless of the benefits of an idea if it is associated with the other party it must be opposed at all costs and weird and wacky excuses made up on why they're bad simply based on who's adopted them.

Was it not god who said be Shepherds of the Earth?

Funny how in the name of Conservatism against liberalism ignore how much we're ****ing up the planet.

I think Earth Day is great - I teach my students every year how to be good stewards of the Earth. I always read The Lorax and we discuss what the Once-ler could've done so that the Truffala trees didn't disappear. We talk about how it's okay to cut down trees to make things we need (furniture, paper, etc.), but it's important to not strip the land and leave it barren and ugly.

Extreme environmentalism (like Gore's documentary) cater to the crazy environmentalists who think that using electricity and hydrocarbon vehicles will eventually destroy the Earth. Judging by the lack of people who are participating in Earth Hour tonight, most agree that it's absurd.

Here's my Earth Hour observance…

2002-12-08 12.00.00-69.jpg

Not visible in this picture are a few more rooms with all the lights on, some laundry equipment running, and dinner cooking on the stove.

i ended up not doing it this year, but i also don't see the point in turning on a blender in every room in some pissant rebellion against conserving energy.

i park the car and walk to stores when i can, and i expend as little energy as possible. why do i try to conserve energy? because i'm not made of money, and it's ****ing smart.

No.

in theory it sounds like a nice idea, but when everyone turns their power back on it probably uses more than was saved.

I prefer more common sense approaches than sloganism.
