It's also a useful tool to confuse the anti-gun nuts who think that guns walk around with a mind of their own and fire at people, or that everyone carrying a gun is a mass murderer waiting to happen.

Nuclear weapons should be legal, because nuclear weapons don't kill people, people kill people.

Up in the sky! It's a bird! It's a plane! It's...Hyperbole-Man!

In WW2, in Japan, nuclear weapons saved millions of lives.

Re: Do Nuclear Bombs Kill People?

drink machines topple over and kill people every year. I beat a toppling ICBM would take out 2 or 3 people

Simple question:
Do nuclear bombs kill people?

It would depend on where the bomb went off. If it went off in the middle of a crowded city, yeah, it would kill a lot of people. If it went off on the surface of a comet that was going to hit the earth, it might save a lot of lives instead.

And since it's pretty obvious where you're going with this, a nuclear warhead, just like a gun, doesn't go off on its own. Someone has to pull the trigger.

Re: Do Nuclear Bombs Kill People?

Figured it was something like that.

Look, this really just isn't a good comparison, as has been pointed out many times.

Nuclear bombs are strategic weapons systems, with a large-scale area effect and the potential to affect people many miles away from the blast radius via fallout or electromagnetic pulse or other effects. It is impossible to use a nuke to target an individual enemy; it is all but impossible to maintain or use nuclear weapons without a supporting organization of thousands of people; it is all but impossible to use a nuke without inflicting thousands or millions of injuries and deaths including civilian "collateral damage". Imagining a legitimate purpose for nukes other than destroying other nations and their civilian populations is a stretch.

Guns, by comparison, are personal weapons that are capable of targeting individual enemies and are not typically area-effect weapons. They can be used by an individual for legitimate purposes such as self-defense and sport. They do not require a massive infrastructure for maintenance and deployment.

It is literally a firecrackers vs atom-bombs comparison that makes apples and oranges look identical.

So in other words there are different types of killings and different types of dead people.

You are saying that it is most important to know how the dead person was killed, imo.

Some killings are sanctified?

I am so confused by your reasoning.

"Do nuclear bombs kill people?"

Two did. The rest of them saved countless lives by making wars between major powers impossible.

It was more of an exchange of life.

We considered american lives more important than japanese lives, at the time in history.

I am talking about the Cold War.

Simple question:

Nuclear bombs are the same as a gun. They require a finger on the trigger. Nuclear Plants, on the other hand, will kill people due to human shortcomings, ignorance and greed.

Re: Do Nuclear Bombs Kill People?

Sorry. Looks like that equation has changed now that north korea has nukes.

You may be right, but I doubt the situation is really all that different: The Communists, even as, eh, colorful as NK, are not suicide bombers - not the people on the top, anyway. The idea is to control this world, not to earn goodies in the next one. They would strike if they thought they could get away with it. Not otherwise.

Re: Do Nuclear Bombs Kill People?

cancer does not kill people, duh.

Re: Do Nuclear Bombs Kill People?

Guns don't kill people.

Rappers do.

Re: Do Nuclear Bombs Kill People?

Simple question:

I agree it is a very simply question

and the only factual answer they way you worded it is no, they simply do not

how they work and the people that launch them do

example

in 2010 america had 5,113 of them, how many people have they killed?

yes
my message is too short so I will bore you all with a bit of poetry.
where are the promises we vowed to keep?
Is it God or men who've fallen asleep.
...I wish to thank the academy...

When detonated in the presence of people, yes. They do kill them...

Re: Do Nuclear Bombs Kill People?

So far, what nuclear weapons have done is ended one world war, prevented any subsequent world war and dramatically reduced the number of deaths from war ever since. This is very similar to how firearms dramatically reduce the number of violent crimes - as noted in my signature line.

Good point. This leads me to the conclussion that we should control guns like we do nuclear bombs. 0 tolerance is good.

And that would be an incorrect conclusion, but why does that not surprise me.

thats pretty illogical

I don't know who thinks that guns walk around planning to shoot up innocent women and children, but I ain't one of them. I do think that there's something psychologically effed up with people in the United States in general that results in thousands of gun deaths per year, though. I work a fair amount in Finland, and I can tell you that whatever you may think about them, those are hard some hard core, armed, hunting mofos over there. Not only that, but they have clear memories of being invaded by the Russians twice in the last century alone, expect another one at any time, and so are, militarily and individually, frigging ready for it.

Now let's look at gun deaths per year between the two countries:

United States: 10.2 deaths/100,000.
Finland: 3.64 deaths/100,000

List of countries by firearm-related death rate - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

So I don't think there's something wrong with guns, per se. I think there's something wrong with us, our culture or our system.

When detonated in the presence of people, yes. They do kill them...

And when detonated upwind of where people are, and when detonated where people will be.

But yeah...
