Just a little trivia fact.
Before WWII Michigan was in the central time zone.
During WWII Michigan changed to the same time zone as New York and other eastern states since we manufactured a lot of tanks and other items for the war.
That time change was meant to be temporary but we never changed back.
So we went on daylight savings time in 1942 year round. Now when we set our clock forward we are on double daylight saving time.

Because it is ridiculous. Whoever "calculates" losses from (I quote from their methodology section) "heart attacks, work injuries, and increased cybeloafing" down to $433,982,548 (and not, say $433, 982, 550 or $433, 980,000) should not be taken seriously.

Having said that, I never quite could get a firm hold on the logic behind the time change. So...we save a bit of energy on an extra hour of natural lighting - but wouldn't we lose more on starting air conditioners an hour earlier on hot afternoons? Perhaps, daylight savings made sense when artificial lighting was expensive in relative terms - or nonexistent - like for a farmer racing the Sun to finish his daywork, but is it still the case?

An observation

I remember when Michigan was thinking about going to daylight savings time back in 1980's the golf courses were in favor of it but the Drive Inn Theaters were against it.
The Drive Inns said DST would put them out of business and it pretty much did that.

I seriously doubt the demise of the drive-in had anything to do with daylight saving's time.

In northern areas the time change keeps kids from standing in the dark along a highway waiting for the school bus, that's the only good reason for it I can think of.

Simple fix - start school one hour later. Problem solved.

That could conflict with working parents schedule that don't want to be gone as their kid waits for the bus.

Not buying that as the most reasonable excuse.

School starting an hour later and ending an hour later would put most kids in school at roughly the same times as parents are at work.

It'd actually blend the two schedules together better. In more cases than not is my guess.

Most parents like to keep an eye on the kids as they wait for the bus and like to leave after the kids are safely aboard. Sad commentary on the times we live in.

If kids are standing in the dark to get a school bus, and mine do and have, then starting school an hour later would still be starting it well before the "standard" 9-5 shift most adults work and therefore there's plenty-o-time for a parent to watch child get on bus safely.

It would also mean the child might not come home to an empty house which is something that's sure to be happening now with school starting so early.

It's a six of one, half dozen of the other issue.

the change to DST costs lots of loss work, fatalities, traffic accidents etc

its an obsolete idea that should be eliminated. we don't need people working in "victory gardens" after they return home from building tanks and machine guns and fighter planes

CGPGrey made an amazing video about this.

Which is why we should just leave the clocks where they are right at this very moment and never change them back.

Leave the "usable daylight" at the end of the day and leave the darkness at the beginning of the day.

I care not-but at some point the DST zone runs into another country's zone

Leave the time alone. You get no more daylight with one or the other. Since different people work at different time it makes no sense to say people get an extra hour of daylight in the evening to do things. People who work midnights or afternoons do not benefit. So leave the friggin time alone, I hate it! :Nuff said! :soap

It's about "usable daylight".

The majority of people would benefit from the extra hour at the end of the day. Majority.

People who work afternoons or midnight tend to be criminals and other societal outcasts. The good guys work 9 to 5 and need that extra hour of day;light in order to maintain.

Compromise..move the time ahead 30 minutes and then never move it again..

Tell that to all the doctors and nurses who work those hours along with all the staff that works with them also. Tell that to all the waitress' and cooks, bartenders, janitors, truck drivers, cabbies, and paramedics too. I hope it was just a bit of whimsy on your part.

I thought the presence of Vampire Cat might give you the idea that a bit of humor was involved.

Well, I thought as much, but then sometimes things fly over my head.............:Oopsie

Humor or not, I prefer DST and if millions must suffer so I can relish its presence, so be it. To the best of my knowledge and belief, I am the single most important person in the universe.

Woops, there goes another million kilowatt dam.
