See, this is what makes me think you could be a poe. You're feeding me straight lines.

I'm not "feeding" you anything, spud. I do not have a sense of humor. Especially when it comes to things as serious as firearms and their appropriate use.

That's a shame. :(

Lucky we're talking about my penis then. It's a pretty big topic, I'm sure you'd find something to tickle your funny bone.

My question wouldn't apply to someone with daily, real-world experience, since the level of protection a gun brings him has been thoroughly measured and understood. I was thinking of people who are not in law enforcement or the military.

I get what you're saying.

Well, I've either trained or trained alongside at least a couple hundred civilian CCWers, whose experience and background varied widely. I'd say 20% had some kind of prior experience in "professional use of force"... be it military or police or other, and probably a similar number had some kind of martial arts training (but not overlapping at least not entirely.)

Probably 50 of these were people I knew rather well and have ongoing friendships with. IMO I think very few of them, if any, are eager to have to pull their gun. Mostly the opposite.

I have been carrying for 11 years, as long as legally possible.

I carry for the protection of my family and myself.

I carry 100% of the time when away from home.

I find carrying to be a humbling experience, as I understand the devastating power that I am responsible for, and the increased self-induced pressure of using it wisely.

Its amazing to me that some of the biggest Liberals in DP carry small arms and are ok with it....Never tought I would live to see that day......Now all you have to do it call your left wing politicans and tell them.......

No, my enormous penis makes me feel empowered. So I don't carry a gun.

That's fair enough. I carry a gun to make up for the inadequacy of my penis, because I can't use my penis to kill an assailant at thirty feet.

But you're Australian.

It can be used as a bludgeoning weapon at short notice. And if you give me 5 minutes and a small pony, I'm a fairly decent jouster.

Small ponies give you a hard-on?

Throw a girl and a Clydesdale into the mix and perhaps he can be the best jouster in the world.

Ah, so you carry a .22 then!?

Those little Clydesdale's are ponies compared to some of the Belgians around these parts!

Hopefully, the women are not larger........

I'm not particularly pro or anti gun and have no dog or hidden agendas in this fight. I have no desire to slander gun owners or paint them in any negative light; and I introduce this thread with this disclaimer because like many hot button topics any one perceived position is likely to be encountered by a polar extreme, an easy example being the Middle East and Abortion forums.

I'm just curious.

Sure. I feel empowered if I am put into a situation where I am confronted by someone with ill intent. Same with my martial arts training. Is that a bad thing?

Does it change my personality and make me a road raging jerk who feels like I can get anything I want? No. I am actually a much nicer person.

Move along people. Nothing intelligent to talk about here.

I think the question is 100% dumb. And word choice makes it clearly a left-wing sort of question...

Empowered? That is such the wrong word, but of course the whole idea is to get those that support CC and such to say 'yes', then the words can be used for a great twist...

Being empowered does not have to have a negative or sinister connotation. If my car breaks down in a bad neighborhood, I would feel 'empowered' to walk to a gas station or well lit area if I needed to. I understand the 'twist' you are talking about though.

I suppose so. I view it more as being prepared, or akin to having insurance. You hope that you never need to use it; yet having a gun (or insurance) and not needing it is far better than needing a gun (or insurance) and not having it. Unlike an insurance policy a gun requires some training and practice to make effective use of it.

Given how complicated some insurance can get one might need some training for that.

What do you mean by empowered?

carrying a gun makes me more confident to protect my family who might be in harms way......Make no mistake about it if attacked I would shoot first and ask questions later..........I will do whatever it takes to protect my family in this nutty world we live in today.

Why? Why word it any different? I want them to understand EXACTLY the answer to that question. It makes me confident when dealing with criminals. You ignore the question and they will treat it like a victory. You smack it down and show them why it is a pointless question.

Why? Why word it any different?

Because empowered is a word used politically. Do you feel 'safer', 'more secure' .. these things make sense. 'Empowered' is just a left wing trap.

Although, I do not carry a gun. I do support this view the most. Taking away or restricting the ability to defend against people that are violent and have a gun would make people very powerless.

I do support increased background checks, but do not support outlawing guns. History shows that the people that are going to have the illegal guns are only going to be the criminals because they are going to retrieve them however they want regardless of the law.

Five days later and the yesses are winning (and with no poll expiration). If that had been my goal I would have done it by now, except I have no desire to cement my reputation as a bait or trap thread starter.
