Re: Formal Debates?

I'd be up for this. If you want, I was thinking we could have these debate via Skype. I have some good audio recording software which I can send to you and then just toss the debate up on Youtube, if anyone would be interested in going that far.

I withdraw my offer of assistance.

Why? I'm waiting to see who else if anyone, is interested.

What are you waiting for, a parade? If you got one person out of a thousand that buys into your vision you nurture it because tomorrow it's 2 and next week it's four.

You need work on your team building skills.

Re: Formal Debates?

I'd love to debate Foreign Policy. That seems to be a popular choice judging by the poll numbers as well. However, you would need to balance it out ie we have to get some guys who are for the War on Terror. I recommend cpwill. He's pretty well read in on the WOT and has the total opposite beliefs of the "libertarian" type foreign policy. Not saying he's a war monger. He just believes that the US should be more aggressive in defending it's interests.

You need to read a book...may I recommend, "How to Make Friends and Influence People".

And I'm telling you to take the ball and run with it and don't worry about what the cheerleaders are doing on the sidelines.

People don't follow visions, they follow leaders with vision. If you are passionate about this proposal (and I assume you do since you took the time to compose it) then husband and nurture each and every apostate you have because they will be the secret to your success.

Re: Formal Debates?

I'd do it for all listed except LGBT.

I only debate important subjects.

Re: Formal Debates?

Maybe if people threw out more specific topics they might find someone who wants to debate them like Stop-Question-Frisk; Challenges of Modernity in Islamic Societies. Going in too broadly and you may end up with people not really debating an issue but talking around each other.

Here's the thing:

In order to make this work, I need to show there is a definite interest. I purposefully picked broad topics, because there could be so many pointed debates we could do.

The jist of this needs to be proven to other Mods that this is worth doing. While I am passionate about formal debates, I am not into strong arming a community into participating in something they have no interest in.

In fact, the only reason I placed this in the polls section, is because it would, in theory, get more attention than it would in feedback/suggestions.

Having said that, I will hone a specific topic for debate and make another poll asking for volunteers to participate.

Like others here, I have a full time job and real life commitments; therefore I apologize for not being more active in trying to garner interest.

I am a firm believer in letting a community dictate what interests THEM.

It would have to include a lot of people, as I wouldn't want people taking on more than 1 or 2 subjects. It needs people who focus on one subject, and not just a pile of jack-of-all-trades guys who think they can speak about everything.

There are lots of people who have extensive knowledge about one topic while being a complete imbecile on the rest.

Keep them on that one subject.

Which is why I was suggesting that people posting that they would be interested to say what type of specific issues they would be interested in debating.

Re: Formal Debates?

Sure. There are a few issues that I'm always up to debate, pretty much anything involving the Bill of Rights, taxation to a certain extent though I'm more philisophical in that regard. Economics in general can be of interest, business, or other evergreen topics.

Re: Formal Debates?

I would be interested in a reverse debate on gun control, where I take the anti-gun side. I can show you peons how it's don and maybe then you can offer me some entertainment in the rest of the forum. I don't formally debate for free though. I'l require another blue ribbon.

You'll have to earn a ribbon. I don't give out ribbons for nothing you know. :p

This is an internet forum bro. Not the halls of Congress or the White House. Get a clue. For all we know you could be a fat 16 year old boy who has never been laid and is looking longingly at TGND's avatar. "I came here to get things done" LOL :lamo

Sorry TGND. Probably derailed your thread with this. I couldn't help it. That post was too much to pass up. I'll leave it alone now.

I take offense to that. One does not have to be a fat 16 year old boy to look longingly at TGND's avatars. I ran just last month or sometime around then.

It was tongue in cheek.

Re: Formal Debates?

They've done it here before, and we did it on PCF and WS... with good results. I believe the key is picking team captains and then putting together a cohesive, intelligent and respectful team.

Yes, a good idea, and I mind NOT that I am out, as I am, like many others, overly opinionated and underly factual.....vague memories of high school debating classes....
Best of good fortune on this one...now if all of the opinionated old fools would say out and away.......

Re: Formal Debates?

I dunno.

4Forums tried this

Mixed results. But that may have been because some of the formal debate people were psychopaths.
If all the debate people had been psychopaths, the results wouldn't be so mixed. No need to start discriminating against psychopaths. There are just too many other deserving groups already asking for it.
