Is it because males do not handle social rejection as well as females?

Are males just more violent than females?

Or other, an please explain;

Thanks!

Actually , the first American mass murderer I've heard of was called Brenda Spencer.

Nevertheless, men are statistically much more violent in general, and much more likely to "go nuts" as well. It appears that there was evolutionary pressure for the XX-chromosome bearers to be selected for stable, safety-oriented behavior, and for us XY-ers to be selected in favor of risk-taking and "thinking outside of the box". After all, we are more expendable, biologically speaking: producing sperm is ridiculously easy, comparing to bearing a mammal offspring.

It appears that in most any distribution of human traits women are bunched closer to the middle of the bell curve, while men boast long tails, on both ends. For example, meta-analysis of intelligence scores (admittedly, "soft science", take everything with a lump of salt) reveals the same average IQ for both sexes, but significantly more geniuses and idiots among men.

In the last 30 years of the 61 mass shootings, one has been committed by a woman.

"What is the connection between gender and outbreaks of massive violence? A helpful way to approach the question is to look at the three main categories of mass murderers. There are "family annihilators," who, as the name suggests, turn on their families. There are "set-and-run" or "hit-and-run" killers, who usually hide and try to avoid capture. Then there are "pseudocommandos," a category that would seem to include James Holmes, the suspected shooter in the July movie theater massacre in Aurora, Colo., and Seung-Hui Cho, who in 2007 killed 32 people during a rampage at Virginia Tech. The pseudocommando can be defined as followed, according to Joni E. Johnston at Psychology Today:

The term "pseudocommando" was first used to describe the type of mass murderer who carefully and methodically plans his actions and who kills indiscriminately in public. This is not a person who "snaps"; he comes prepared with a powerful arsenal of weapons, typically has no escape planned, and is pursing a highly personal and well-thought-out agenda of "payback."

According to research, these revenge mass murderers tend to have been bullied or socially excluded as children. As adults, they tend to be highly sensitive to any slight or rejection and to spend time dwelling on past humiliations. Given the right circumstances, these obsessive thoughts turn into violent revenge fantasies to protect a fragile — sometimes overly inflated — ego. In fact, it is when the perpetrator is feeling most powerless that he is likely to justify acting on his fantasies and begin the transition from obsessive thought to devastating action. The meticulous plans he make not only distract him from a reality that he finds increasingly intolerable, they give him a false sense of power and omnipotence.

The tipping point for pseudocommandos is usually a major personal loss or rejection of some kind. Holmes, an excellent student growing up, saw his grades decline in a more competitive Ph.D. atmosphere. Cho was reportedly bullied and mocked, and saw himself as an avenger for the weak. We don't know what, if anything, set off Lanza, but we do know that his parents divorced in 2009 and that he was reportedly an outcast."

Why are there so few female mass murderers? - The Week

I selected that men are more violent. Generally speaking I think that about sums it up. It's in our nature/genetics/evolutionary biology to be.

Because women drive men insane!

Actually, it is a mix of a lot of things. Men are over represented on both ends of the spectrum. Men are some of the most intelligent creatures on the planet. Just visit the patent office and you will notice that over 90% of patents are submitted by men.

Men are also the overwhelming majority of those who are sent to disaster areas to clean up, provide aide and security. Men are the majority of those who are enforcers of the law and carry out the justice on those who break them.

Men are the most generous beings on the planet, selflessly giving their lives to protect their families and communities in wars. But with that same power, can also be the most violent people on the planet as well. However, whenever there are violent men to deal with, society sends good men to take care of it.

Most mass murderers in the US are also white, is that due also to "nature/genetics/evolutionary biology"?

The "sensitivity to rejection" does make sense, even in the evolutionary context I was blabbing about earlier: We males are expendable, therefore we are insecure.

Maternal instinct. We women are life givers. Men are life takers. This is consistent with our instinctive roles; women are gatherers, men are hunters. This is true of almost all lifeforms which differentiate by female and male; gatherers and hunters.

Perhaps like with spies, perhaps it is just that there are fewer Female Mass Murderers that we know about.

I agree with this and would add that there is a societal component regarding the expression of feeling and emotion that comes in as well. Whereas women are (typically) more available to feelings of love and empathy, men are taught from the very earliest ages to shut up, stop crying, grow up, and be a man. Expressions of love and vulnerability are seen as weakness. Cry and you aren't just ridiculed, your very manhood is threatened by family by peers. So we learn that lesson but it comes with a hard price. Then throw elements of mental illness, rejection, social isolation, etc all into the mix and it becomes a potent cocktail.

Women tend to be far more civilized.

We like to take things nice and slow... mass murders, they're over too quick........

It's because men are always taught to repress their emotions and instead be tough guys. It builds up until they get violent sometimes.

It's simply because the majority of the people in the US are white.

10News - Mass, multiple murders rates constant despite overall decline in homicides12172012 - News Story

Mass murderers are considerably more likely to be white males than are killers in general. Sixty percent of mass murders are committed by whites, compared to 49 percent of all killings. Blacks account for 36 percent of mass killings, but 49 percent of all homicides. People of other races account for 4 percent of mass killings and 2 percent of all homicides.

Whites make up 78.1% of the population in the US but account for a mere 60% of mass murders.

And blacks only account for 13.1% of the US population but a whopping 36% of mass murders.

No, I would assume that has to do with demographics.

[edit] I posted before seeing Muhummed's response (post 20). Thanks Muhummed, well put.

It's simply because the majority of the people in the US are white.

Catawba, I'm not sure if you asked that question genuinely seeking information, or if you were trying to show mocking sarcasm, but if it's the latter, you should be a little more thoughtful before you unleash it, and think about what you're saying/asking.

You obviously didn't think too hard about this statement.

It's because the vast majority of the population of people are white. And whites actually have a lower percentage.

Maybe women who are suicidal pathetic losers do not have this "If I'm going die I'm going to take as many people with me as possible and I want my 15 minutes of fame" mentality and therefore will just shoot themselves, lock themselves in garage with the car running, over dose on pills or some other drug, jump from a tall building, slit their wrists or some other means of suicide that doesn't involve taking others with them. Maybe women who are suicidal pathetic losers can't handle a firearm as well as their male counterparts. Maybe women who are suicidal pathetic losers are more likely to get help. Who knows why the handful of mass shootings in this country are mostly perpetrated by males.

Maybe we are looking at this wrong
It is a fact that women live longer than men.
Leave out the word MASS in the OP, and think about it.....and if what your wife cooks for you tastes funny, bear in mind that the weapon of choice for women is usually poison.

Could it be that man and Women's brains are actually wired a little different?
