Should the Government be in the Marriage Business?

Well, not to open up another can of worms but if you want to play devil's advocate, I'll jump right in too.

A 40 year old man marrying his second wife who happens to be 14.

I don't have a problem with polygamy.
I do have a problem with the age, however the appropriate age of marriage is a social norm issue. The general belief in academic circles puts Mary at 12 when she had Jesus, so....What ya trying to say about the Big Guy,eh?
Check out the history of how its done in Northern Arizona. You are thinking they have a choice, i.e. they can say "No.", but that option is not available.
Oh, what Big Guy, the one in Arizona?

Obviously no one is condoning forced marriages nor are they condoning under age marriages. These two for instances go on now. There is nothing to suggest turning the government into a registry for marriage would some how make age of consent laws any less meaningful. Forced marriages, well, I don't know how you can do that anyhow, but I'm certain changing the role of government isn't going to have an impact on it in any way.

This shouldn't be viewed as a sign that you are for or against gay marriage, polygamy, etc. Only whether or not the government should be the arbiter in moral decisions involving who or what is to be considered a suitable partner(s)

For the sake of any children, yes.

the fact that the question is being asked and only given two possible answers

Picked no, but it shouldn't be involved in registry either. There should be no government influence in any marriage whether it be straight, gay, or otherwise.

Well, the registry is for property rights not marriage rights so there isn't really influence.
