I can't stand it when certain Atheists try to convert people because Atheism isn't a religion at all.

I have never understood the point of trying to talk people out of their beliefs. I give my opinions when warranted, but I am not trying to convince people to give up what they believe and what keeps them at peace. I think that is something that some people don't get.

Sometimes whatever you say they think their thoughts are being challenged. Like the other day I stated my position that it is highly unlikely that one will see the others while being dead and buried at the funerals (i.e., due to nerves that would allow the flow of information of others may be largely destroyed). Later I stated that Albanians were Orthodox and Catholic before the Ottoman Empire 500 year rule from 15th century and onwards. What I got back was "You will never make me lose my faith!" :doh

Christian, off and on for about 14 years now, but the longer I go with it, the more comfortable I am in thinking of myself that way (I was raised by some pretty militant atheists) and the longer I do the more evidence I find that this is the correct choice (at least for me). I have to admit, I fought it for years though, because a large part of me needs evidence to believe in something and it took a while to build up sufficient evidence to satisfy that part of me (eventually I ran out of alternative explanations that made logical sense to me). But every time I gave up on the whole thing, I ended up back in for one reason or another.

Whenever I get into a bind, for example, I find that God always steps in to save me, often in a profound (and very noticeable to me) way, which is what I see as that evidence. Heck something amazing happened even yesterday. Or I find that if I need to do something, I get slapped in the face with it over and over until I give up and do it (this has happened recently too)

Beyond that, I can't say I do much in terms of the formal trappings of the religion, that aspect of it always annoyed me for some reason. Modern Churches are somewhat better, but what I wouldn't give for a Church that did heavy metal or something and attracted the type of people who listen to that type of music. My ex father in law preaches a biker Church, so heavy metal Church probably exists somewhere, hopefully.

It is different if your opinion is warranted like on this forum for instance...but a totally different thing if there is no debate and an Atheist just attacks religion for no reason...I've seen it countless times.

Maybe due to interactions in real life with people such as those that I described do they find more freedom to express here.

You Left Out Atheist
And YES, Atheism Is A RELIGION
And Your Above Paragraph Is Pompous Hog-Wash

And So Are YOU

Atheism is not a religion because it is unorganized, lacks any central texts, and, most important of all, lacks a belief in a supreme being or force.

Atheism was included in the poll. I didn't mention it in my post because of the above reason, but I also did not specifically mention Islam, Judaism, Sikhism, Buddhism, Hinduism, or countless other religions.

Your three incomplete sentences are pompous, illiterate hogwash.

And YOU are a much less kind word. :)

Atheism isn't a religion, but it is a belief system (to a degree).

I see religion as utilitarian rather than believing in much of any of it. I have a vague conception of God, probably holdovers from the Catholic background, but it's not a big part of my identity. I see it as a useful moral and ethical guide for individuals and society at large.

I'm Catholic. Former Baptist.

I'm just curious and your post is so clear that I'll ask what is a simple question. It's not ment to be a put down. It is just to clarify how you are thinking and percieving stuff. So, what do you know to be a fact? High level please. thx
Fact as it pertains to what exactly? Salvation? Jesus? God? The fate of our race?

Evolution demonstrates how the process of replication could give rise to the illusion of design. Organisms create copies of themselves, which create copies of themselves, to a possible endless sum of generations. Any errors in the copying process that are detrimental to the organism will cease its ability to replicate, while copying errors that are beneficial to replication will lead to that errors' dominance. After numerous generations, the successful replicators will seem to be designed for effectiveness, when in reality it is the simple accumulation of that organisms' accidentally successful copying errors that had lead to effective replicating. There is no design or intelligence in the process at all.

Evolution is a theory that MAY explain how the replication process could give rise to an illusion of design. It has not been proven. It is known that cellular organisms have become more complex, it is not known EXACTLY how that happened.

John von Neumann demonstrated proof in the 1950s that it is theoretically possible for a simple physical system to make exact copies of itself from surrounding materials. His work. Since then we have identified numerous molecules and crystals that can replicate in ways that would spawn natural selection. You can view some of them here.

I find NO useful information in Mr. von Newmann's simple machine and the evolution of living organisms, except an illusion of similarity.

Beyond that, I believe you should be introduced to the Argument from Ignorance:

1. There are things that we cannot explain yet.
2. God did it.

It is an informal logical fallacy that claims only a proposition is true only because it has not been proved as false. It represents a false dichotomy between true and false, and ignores the third option; that there is insufficient information available to prove the proposition true or false. In other words, Point 2 does not logically follow Point 1. I could have simply written -

1. There are thing that we cannot explain yet.
2. A wild hedgehog wearing a flower-print tea cozy did it.

Allow me to introduce you to the Corollary of Close Mindedness:

1. Atheism believes that all physical changes are explained by science.
2. I believe there is no god.
3. Despite the fact that there is no scientific understanding of how matter changes from all inorganic to a living cell, it cannot possibly indicate there might be a god, because of #2.

From your statement: It represents a false dichotomy between true and false, and ignores the third option; that there is insufficient information available to prove the proposition true or false.

Explained above.

No, arms waved above.

I'm an atheist. Let me be super clear on what I mean when I say that.

What I mean is that I don't have a belief in any deity. It does not mean I am making a positive claim that no deity exists.

I simply have no reason to believe in any of the deities humanity currently has on offer, or any theoretical situation that may accommodate a deity that has as of yet been presented to me.

Agnostic.

1991 I left the lutheran church, cause I couldn´t agree with her no longer.
I don´t believe in god, but it don´t matter me if he should exist.

I accept religious believes until they hurt human rights. It sadden me that christian churches often hurt the human rights.

From what I've noticed people give Evangelicals a bad rap over our mainstream views on social issues or the notion that we are sheeples to Sarah Palin, Michele Bachmann, and Rick Santorum.

...and just to add some color to this, I consider myself an Evangelical and generally a political liberal (though, admittedly, I am conservative on several social issues).
