Not really sure why we do this anymore. It seems like a waste of time and money to have a big party every time someone gets selected to be President. Especially when theyre relected. I know that most of it is paid for privately, but theres got to be plenty of side expenses that arent. I say, swear them in, and get to work.

It's a way of saying thank you to supporters, and a way for the rest of us to see who the President thanks. ;)

Today's official inauguration is a small formality, tommorow's (publicity?) redo show is the wasteful, hoopla version. Obama/Biden decided on that since the timing of the real event on a Sunday was not to their liking. ;)

obama is all about pomp and circumstance and this inaugural is something he lives for, Michelle even got a new do for it which leads to another question. Why is Michelle trying so hard to look white? She looks like a valley girl and I'm surprised she didn't go Blondie.

I can understand getting rid of it for re-elections, but for first elections it's important that we all see him publicly swearing to uphold the constitution so that we can call him a lying piece of **** later.

Really need to be putting a rootabega option because I reallydon't care either way.

I am good with the swearing in ceremony. the massive parties following it seem unnecessary. just have a nice dinner at the white house and get back to work.

however, I will note that this kind of complaint is always raised by the losing party like clockwork every four years. when their candidate wins the next time around, though, they are all about the coronation, so maybe it's inevitable.

January 20th is mandated by law, no exceptions, hence the official and actual swearing in today.

The party(s) can be any time. Doing the parties on a Sunday would probably be criticized, and that to me seems a fight that's simply not worth the effort or time. I have no issue in that regard.

I do think that it is unnecessary when the person has been re-elected and is already sitting in office, though. Even if it is private money, it seems like a waste to me. Then again, caterers and other party support people could use the work, so I guess it's not a huge deal.

I think it is crazy that the crowds get so huge, but that is people's stupidity not the fault of the ceremony.

You are kidding, right?

:stop: Step away from the alcohol.

Though I do think Michelle's new 'do makes her look like an old person desperately trying to look young... which is worse than simply being or looking old.

It's a celebration of our democracy and the office we elect, it is a great tradition.

As I just watched the tape of former President George W. Bush say: "The peaceful transfer of authority is rare in history, yet common in our country. With a simple oath, we affirm old traditions and make new beginnings. "

It's a tradition worth celebrating and all parties have indulged.

Apparently you missed the pomp and circumstance of the inaugurations of Presidents Reagan, George H. W. Bush and George W. Bush? There was no shortage of either.

My the grapes are sour.

She's not old.

Right is right.

As far as I can tell, they only celebrate it in Washington. The rest of the country doesnt care. One day Id like these celebrities to lead by example and just get to work. This smacks of royalty.

Well, how about former president's funerals? There is money involved there with additonal police support and staff to organize and run it. GH Bush and Carter are in the batter's box so to speak. Should they just put an obit in the paper and call it a day?

I really don't know myself. As someone else here noted there are vendor's whose income counts on these events.

You can go on and on with these questions. How about the winning World Series Team , should a city have to pay for their parade?

The bottom line is that the money is being spent in the USA and that is nice for a change.

Funerals are a personal thing. So yes, Im not in favor of special treatment. I dont like the royalty that being President or any politican has become. They are no different than us other than the power we give them. Sports winner? Thats up to the city. I wouldnt support it in my city. Sports is a business, and they can pay for things themselves.

She's not old.
Three points...

  1. I didn't say she was/is. I just said she is acting like an old person who is fighting the idea.
  2. "Old" is subjective. You'll have to specify what you consider old to be.
  3. Evidence (her actions/'do) suggests she thinks or fears she is (see #1).

There are some things that I believe the office of President is entitled to... and, yes, I used the word "entitled"... just because they're President.

  • Secret Service protection. Including after office.
  • State funerals.
  • Inaugurations (first time, iffy about 2nd terms)
  • Essentially free travel while in office.*

Stuff like that.

*- I don't mind his recent vacation in Hawaii, but I most certainly do mind that he went twice. Spare me the 'fiscal cliff' crap. Anybody could have seen that coming down to the last minute, and he should have juggled his schedule accordingly and made a single trip. It's not like he had "use it or lose it" vacation time to burn through.
