So you choose not to participate, that is your right. Then you can't really complain. It's like the woman sitting there angry but silent at her husband. He should know why she's angry and fix it without word from her.

Our government was designed for its citizens to participate.

Not voting is plenty of a voice. It says I don't like the choices you put in front of me.

Anyone who is not listening to Mark Steyn ridiculing the inauguration and it's participants, live at this very moment is missing some great humor!

Sure, silence speaks volumes.

I think it is a waste of money. Decadence at it's finest.

I approve of all government money being stopped spending on anything for show. This includes Nascar/Football fly-overs, Blue Angel/Thunderbird exhibitions, parades, etc.

If some fool wants to pay them for it, so be it. But tax dollars should not be spent on anything other than nuts and bolts tangible items that show a return for the expense.

I think we can still have the swearing in and such but we don't really all the hoopla that goes with it. Plus a lot of it is just wasteful spending.

Nonsense. The peaceful transfer of power is the most important part of our Govt.
Inaugurations are underplayed, given the massive importance of the ceremony.
As far as spending, most of it is from donations.

And yet, you posted in the thread.........:thinking

It's a poll, I had no intention in debating anyone. I was expressing my discontent with the poll choices.

What importance?

What importance?

The peaceful transfer of power. Given that in many parts of the world, transfers of power often involve revolution or civil war, it is significant.

So we need a ceremony because why? So a new president is in office without a war. I don't see why that needs to be celebrated.

Oh, this should not be that hard for you. If you want re-read the thread, think about previous inauguration speeches in American history's past, and stop feigning ignorance.

It's a tradition that we as a nation should keep. It's a tradition the represent that our democracy works (regardless of your man won or not) and shows that power can be passed peacefully from one administration to another.

As far as I can tell, they only celebrate it in Washington. The rest of the country doesn't care. One day Id like these celebrities to lead by example and just get to work. This smacks of royalty.
My sentiments exactly, and this goes back to the George Washington days...We were trying to escape this regal-ness business....what happened ?

Why are the speeches important? Are people not aware the guy is a douche by then?

They frame the upcoming term, include policy proposals, and that message is sent straight to the public. You should know this by a quick perusing of political history.

The second question is irrelevant.

Because people don't know??

They largely do not, no. It is also still informative for those who are knowledgeable.

You don't care and think it smacks of royalty, but you can't really say you speak for the rest of the country. Inauguration ceremonies and balls have been held since President Washington's first.

That doesn't mean that huge parties on the public dime isn't a staple of royalty.

And these ignorant people will pay attention now?

And these ignorant people will pay attention now?

More than you think, yes. Many folks need it to be framed, hence the concerns about "what are you doing for your second term?" during the campaign. It will dominate the news cycle for a while now.

The founders, indulged in a staple of royalty? Who knew?

Now, when people say we should do away with inauguration ceremonies, they are only talking the uppity ones, right?

Cities should bid for them like the Olympics.
