Your Greatest Fear

What is your greatest fear?

You would have enjoyed being with me on patrol in Honduras. One night we were tailing a few unfriendlies and I walked between a couple of trees where a banana spider had spun a web. I'm talking head to toe web and just waiting for whatever monster made such a thing!

Why do think you I live in basically a desert. To avoid just those kinds of critters. They would have to commit me to psch ward if I lived in a jungle. Damn spiders amplify my flight and fight responce by quite a bit. Scares the hell out of people who dont know me. I must have been eaten by one in a previous life. I go absolutely ape ****. Spiders are the ONLY thing I have nightmares about. Those only occure once a decade or so thank god. There are very few things that panic me and spiders even more so then drowning. I totaly wig out. If I were to interogated and they knew about that phobia, I would sing like a fricken canary.

You didnt list the most likely and most calamitous upcoming crisis: currency collapse.

I considered this to be encompassed by "Overbearing Government - Taxes, Regulation, Spending," as they are basically reflexive runaway monetary policies that are used as a last refuge of failing economic empires, and have the effect of a retrospective tax.

Technically I don't think it fits that category because it does not involved taxes, regulation or spending per se. I suppose you could make an argument for it being a spending problem but that seems a little contorted. As a "tax," I dunno, inflation destroys money, but I have to consider the whole "inflation as a hidden tax" thing to be a metaphor. If government destroys the currency intentionally to meet its nominal entitlement obligations is that a effectively tax? Yes. But is it literally a tax? No.

Of the list, probably government oppressiveness.
Of other things mentioned, being framed or in general strung up by the public on some trumped up character charges would be next I suppose.

Honduras, heck, I ran into that same spider on its web where I grew up in Louisiana. Hand-sized spider (including legs), it sat perched on my head. My older sister who was following me on the trail, saw it on my head, screamed and ran home. I recall my displeasure with her leaving me to die at the fangs of a spider. My dad came back and swatted it off. Later he told me how freaked out he was too, but you know dads, nothing appears to phase them :)

Stuff like that sure does clue you in to who your friends are!:lamo

Oh crap! You mean we might have to do this all again. Ok, I can fear that.

You won't. In your next life you're coming back as a toilet brush.

(totally joking, in case anyone can't tell)

I had the same reaction. my theory is that the aversion to the tail is at least in part evolutionary. it took a conscious effort on my part to get past it.

the first thing she did was to run straight up my sleeve at the pet store, and it about made me jump out of my skin. then she peeked out at me, and I knew she had a good soul. it did take me a few weeks to get past the tail, though.

Helix, you seem like the coolest, calmest, most easy going guy. I really like the way you write.

thank you for the compliment.

in reality, i'm a little more nervous and stumbling / awkward. however, the internet gives me that extra second to gather my thoughts.

So you hate liberals also. Cool.

No, I don't hate liberals, I agree with them on some issues too.

However, I do hate a mentality that would say religious people shouldn't vote or that religion should be discourage, persecuted, oppressed, or made illegal.

You are aware, DV, are you not, that "free speech" is limited, and must be.
And liberals are to counter religious extremists, a serious problem.
But, no hate necessary.

Is it any wonder the most fearful amongst us have mustered at "GOVERNMENT REGULATION, TAXES, ETC.," selection. 50%. Wow.

Paranoia will destroy ya....

Enjoy America. America rocks. Don't let life pass you by waiting for the sky to fall.

LOL!

I almost went the flu/pandemic route because I've had pneumonia for the better part of the week. But I'll get over it and still worry about the progressive Orwellian path my country is taking.

Global warming / Climate change
Other environmental concerns
Flu (or other) pandemic
Capitalist exploiters
Terrorism / Crime
Proliferation of firearms
Jobs exported outside U.S.
Illegal Immigration
Drug abuse / Cartels
Overbearing government - Taxes, regulations, spending, etc.

None of those are any where near my greatest fear.

I really like pet rats. They're lovely, intelligent, sweet creatures. You get a much better pet in a rat than in any other kind of rodent, I reckon. Rabbits? Stupid, unresponsive baby-eaters.

Funny thing is, I really hate wild rats. Destructive, dirty and defiant. Go figure!

Jobs exported outside USA is such a big fear that it deserves its place along with the others there huh?

I clicked corporate capitalism exploitation. Each day of every month they constantly think how will they be richer in the shady areas of law that the consumer is not aware about.

That of course is third in rank after: a) painful death, and b) death.

Yes, I noticed that. I also noticed that every person who voted for Government Regulation was American. The non-American voters went for drugs, guns and capitalists. Interesting.

I know, I know. I don't understand the contradiction either. Mind you, my little Roxy and White Fang might be the same species, but I ain't letting White Fang go to sleep under my jumper, in my armpit.

Roxy...

I hate rats too. My friend got her daughter one as a pet and tried to get me to touch/pet it. Ewwwwwww no! I think I was psychologically scarred by "Willard" in my youth.
