It's not only the big banks. I belong to a local NJ bank. They now charge me if I do not use their ATM and recently I stopped payment on a check and they charged my account by 30.00. This is outrageous!! Wish I could keep my money in my mattress!! I hate banks!!

I dont use atms I refuse to pay a fee to access my own money and we only write checks for certain bills...its tough and I share your pain...but greed has ooozed throughout our society. All we can do is minimize them raping us as much as possible. Just imagine if the republicans got their way and their were NO regulations on the pigs at the trough.
I for one will rejoice if bank of america goes belly up like all the experts are predicting.

I can understand the stopped payment charge, although $30 seems high. It does require extra personal labor time for a bank employee to process the stop payment order. Not a standard transaction. The ATMs are another story. They want to charge us to use our money for an electronic transaction and that's not right.

We use a bank that is part of a well known company that is associated more with stock investing and two credit unions (one in our summer place the other in our winter place). No charges. Usually get cash at Costco and we mostly use the AmEx card from them. We even get 'electronically' transfeered money (wired), e.g. to pay for a home purchase, free.

In my area Publix atms do not charge any fees...of course your bank can still charge a few...but if it doesnt its free...

You think thats necessary or the right thing for banks to put you through....plus you paid part of the fee upfront paying a lawyer and I dont know where you live but around here talking to a lawyer on the phone cost more than that..
For something as big as a home purchase? You bet I think it's worth it! The best contracts are those where everything is spelled out and everyone understands their responsibilities and options under the contract.

MO - just like my name says. :)

And we're talking about 1995, which is when I bought my current, and most likely last, home. In today's $$$ that's ~$30, more of less. $20 fees for 10 min was pretty common back then. I'm sure it's more now but, like a home inspection, it was worth every penny. Today I would look it up on the Internet without it costing me a thing. :)
