I think every single person over the age of 18 who is not demonstrably mentally or physically disabled ought to be required to work 6-8 hours every single day in order to qualify for welfare. Unemployment is a bit different since the individual paid into it while working but I don't think they should be able to get more out of the system than they put in, ie. if you paid into unemployment for X weeks, you should only be able to draw unemployment for Y weeks until your fund is empty.
Then what would the unemployment benefits system do with all the extra money? If someone can only draw less than what they put in, and some people put in but never draw out, you're going to just start piling up money in the sytem.
Why shouldn't they show up every morning at the state garage and pick up trash, do yard work, janitor work and pay back some of the entitlement they draw?
It was very difficult in the Nineteenth Century to even get slaves to work, how would you ever get the free loons to do a damn thing today? They'd all show up stoned anyway.
because unemployment is insurance that you pay into.
if your house burns down, should you be forced to do clerical work for Allstate in exchange?
Unemployment is designed to go for 26 weeks , no more. What we are doing now is borrowing money to cover it which is wrong. Your comparison is asinine
Then when you retire, you get all of the money that you put in, plus whatever portion your employer put in, in addition to whatever social security benefits you also paid in. You should never get more than you paid into the system, plus whatever interest has accrued on your investment.
while i'm not for making unemployment last indefinitely, it is still insurance that we pay for in advance. we're better off if people have some time to find a new job in their field.
If you have been off more than 6 months you aren't looking that hard to begin with

this is bull****. it took me almost nine months in 2009, and i was working my ass off to find another job in my field. i was lucky to find one that quickly.
Yeah but how many years of unemployment until we can just put their ass on welfare and be done with it?
Thanks for proving my point "in my field"

there is no point in having highly skilled workers doing unskilled jobs during a limited period of time. that throws people out of those jobs who aren't trained to do something else. then you pay welfare for them.
Where did you come up with that figure, emotions and a gut feeling? Perhaps its coming from the general theme of superiority we get from around here?
