No, because I don't believe in indoctrination.

They should absolutely not be required, patriotism is an excellent characteristic but should only be expressed by those who want to.

I think the USA is so vast and so divided in each state that they should be reminded that they are a single nation.

Should kids be required to recite The Pledge of Allegiance? Why or why not?

Required by whom?

If you are talking about the federal government...no.

If you are talking about State or local governments...no.

If you are talking about local school districts...yes, if they so choose.

...as long as your heart beats...PLEDGE YOUR ALLEGIANCE...

What if you were a member of the local Board of Ed? How would YOU vote?

What is the pledge of allegiance?

It is a good way to focus the class to get it underway. I don't know that the Pledge itself does anything more or less than the lyrics to a song would do.

As recited by me when I was a kid, the pledge was (and I kid you not):

I pwedge awwegiance to da frag of the United States of America, and to the wepublic of Japan, one Nation, invisible, with liberdee and justice for all.

No, they shouldn't. I'm fine if schools want to do it, but no one should be forced to take part.

I always liked Calvin's version.

No one should be required to recite anything. Freedom of speech includes the freedom not to speak.

You must be kidding , pulling my leg.
Canada ?
So what do the Canadians do ?
I say YES, we need things to unite us, NOT divide
And this is something that must not be optional.
Patriotism can never be optional.

Only if you remove the 1950's inclusion of "under God". And I don't think any child should be brainwashed into nationalism when that nation has 750 overseas bases in 36 countries to protect the rich corporations interest.

Required, no. Encouraged through normalcy? Absolutely. Encouraging nationalism and a national identity is necessary and good.

Yes, they should be required to say the pledge of allegiance at:

-the start of every school year/semester.
-at any event that the school organizes in honor of certain historical events.

But no, they shouldn't be forced to say the pledge of allegiance before every class or every day. It is just an overdo. Patriotism is a good thing, but this is not the way to bring it about. This is as someone said, just indoctrination.

I refused in school, it was rarely an issue. I will never partake in this ridiculous ritual of "proving loyalty" but then again, I refuse to participate in nationalism anyway.

No, everyone should be allowed to freeload and attack the nation that protects them and feeds they and their families.

That is the definition of the devastating failure of multi-culturalism. Your nation becomes filled with people that you wouldn't even want living next door to you.

What does that have to do with multiculturalism?

No, because you know that whole freedom of speech thing.
